Circumferentially Interrupted Thread Patents (Class 411/417)
  • Patent number: 10337551
Abstract: A thread repair insert system having a cylindrical body that extends from an upper end to a lower end and includes a threaded exterior surface and a hollow interior having a threaded interior surface. The lower end of the cylindrical body includes a cutting section that includes a plurality of notches that separate threaded sections. The threaded sections include a cutting edge followed in the direction of rotation by a trailing edge. The lower end also tapers or narrows slightly such that the threaded sections transition from partial threads to full threads as they extend upward. As the thread repair insert is rotated into an opening in parent material, the cutting edge cuts material which is forced between the threads of the threaded sections. As the threaded sections transition from partial threads to full threads in the threaded sections, threads are roll-formed in the parent material.

  • Publication number: 20130209192
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention comprise hot-rolled threaded rebar bolts that are less costly to manufacture but maintain the same or similar structural benefits of more costly manufactured bolts presently in use. One embodiment of the invention is directed generally to bolts for use in mine roof support applications, or other structural support applications, that are manufactured by hot-rolling a steel bar into a threaded bolt. Hot-rolling threads onto a bar results in eliminating costly processes to prepare the rebar for threading and mechanically threading the rebar via standard thread-cutting schemes, and creates bolts efficiently in large quantities that have semi-continuous threads and minor or no longitudinal ribs. The threaded rebar bolts are rotatable in cured resin nuts, making them tensionable, and can be adapted for use with a columnar resin nut disposed in bore holes in geological structures.

  • Patent number: 8439617
Abstract: A self-tapping insert is installed in a pre-existing bore hole in a workpiece by rotating the insert, causing cutting threads on the exterior of the self-tapping insert to cut new threads. Engagement threads on the exterior of the self-tapping insert engage the new threads to retain the self-tapping insert within the workpiece. The self-tapping insert may comprise internal threads which are used to replace damaged threads in the workpiece. The means of installing the self-tapping insert may include a drive bolt having threads which make up into those of the self-tapping insert's internal threads. The self-tapping insert is aligned within the bore hole by means of a detachable pilot, which is connected to the insert with attachment means. The attachment means include the pilot being attached to the drive bolt. The pilot may be attached to the drive bolt means of left-handed threads in an axially-centered aperture of the pilot and matching left-handed threads on the end of the drive bolt.

Each barbed thread section is a section of thread having a leading edge and a trailing edge, the trailing edge defining a barb to increase the screw's resistance to backing out once driven into place. A nail with a barbed point is a nail having one or more barbs formed in the nail's point. Each barb is defined by a leading edge and a trailing edge. The barb's trailing edge forms an acute angle with the longitudinal axis of the nail. The barbs extend from the nail shank to prevent the nail from backing out.

Abstract: A threaded fastener has a substantially single helical thread formed upon a shank portion thereof, and a plurality of substantially saw-blade type or serrated teeth are formed upon crest portions of leading ones of individual thread portions of the helical thread. The threads of the threaded screw fastener are also characterized by means of predetermined flank angles, and such flank angles, in conjunction with the saw-blade type or serrated teeth, permit the threaded screw fastener of the present invention to be utilized within any one of a multiplicity of substrates, such as, for example, wood, metal, thermoplastics, composite materials, concrete, hard aggregate, or the like.

Abstract: The thread (15) of a wood or the like screw has pairs of V-shaped recesses (22, 23) in the edge of a selected intermediate length of the thread (17). Each pair defines a W-shaped cutout (19, 20, 11). The cutouts (19-21) extend into only a part of radial width of the thread (15). There are only about five cutouts (19-21) at each convolute (17) of the limited length. The lengths of the thread portion (16) at the tip and the thread portion (18) at the head (13) of the screw are devoid of the cutouts. Each cutout defines a cutting tooth (24) which facilitates the driving of the screw into the workpiece. The recesses (22, 23) provide cavities for fibrous debris generated by the respective tooth (24). When the screw is in place, the teeth (24) are pressed axially toward the thread produced in the workpiece to reduce the loosening tendency of the installed screw. The disposition and size of the cutouts (19-21), is about three cutouts per one convolute so as not to unduly impede the torque strength of the screw.

Abstract: A combination screw and clearance drill is provided that in one mode of operation is able to drill a pilot hole for the screw threads through a top piece of material and then screw into a lower piece of material, thus enabling the two pieces of material to be screwed tightly together in a single operation. The screw is designed in such a manner that the ability of the screw to drill a clearance hole for the threads does not substantially effect the gripping ability of the screw. In one direction of rotation the screw is able to drill the clearance hole for the threads of the screw and by reversing rotation the screw is able to stop drilling a clearance hole and function as a regular screw. Flutes in the screw head cut a counter bore for the head when the head contacts the surface of the top piece of material.
