Abstract: An expansion assembly for use with resin on a mine roof bolt includes an expandable shell and a camming plug having a first end wall spaced from a second end wall by a tapered body portion. Four equidistantly spaced grooves extend longitudinally in the tapered body portion. Pairs of grooves are connected across the second end wall by transverse grooves that form resin flow channels. A rib formation extends outwardly from the side wall adjacent to and removed from a groove. The rib formation defines the edge of the groove and abuts an edge of one of the fingers of the expandable shell to align the grooves of the plug with the respective slots formed between the shell fingers. This alignment assures unobstructed flow of the mixed resin downwardly through the plug grooves and shell slots into surrounding relation with the expansion assembly for secure bonding of the assembly with the walls of a bore hole.

  • Patent number: 4474515
Abstract: The utility of an expansion fastener including an externally threaded shaft having a head shaped so as to be capable of being engaged by a manipulative tool, a generally cylindrical longitudinally split sleeve located around the shaft, a nut threaded on the shaft, the sleeve and the nut including coacting surfaces capable of expanding the sleeve as the nut is moved on the shaft can be improved by utilizing coacting structures on the end of the sleeve remote from the head and on the nut for preventing relative rotation between the sleeve and the nut as the shaft is turned. Preferably the sleeve is twisted slightly in a spiral-like manner so that an end of the sleeve serves as one of the coacting structures which engages an adjacent ridged or other not smooth surface of the nut serving as the other coacting structure.

  • Patent number: 4402639
Abstract: An anchor bolt is arranged to be secured in a relatively deeply drilled hole having a conical enlargement adjacent the base or inner end of the hole. The anchor bolt is formed of an axially elongated tie rod and an anchor located on the end of the tie rod which is inserted into the base of the drilled hole. The anchor is made up of a number of radially expandable sleeve segments. The anchor also includes a cone element for expanding the sleeve segments radially outwardly into the conical enlargement in the hole. The sleeve segments have an outside radius variable in the axial direction of the segments. The radially outer surface of the segments is substantially smooth for their axial length. At the smaller diameter end of the sleeve, the segments are held together by an annular elastic disc.

  • Patent number: 4274324
Abstract: A plastic screw anchor for fastening fixtures and other objects to a hollow wall, the anchor including a four-legged diamond-shaped shank whose front legs are joined together by a front apex living hinge and whose rear legs are joined to the front legs by side apex living hinges, the ends of the rear legs defining a rear apex. Secured by a pair of normally outstretched resilient webs to the rear legs of the shank is a flanged socket whose bore lies in registration with an opening formed in the front apex hinge. The diamond-shaped shank is collapsible to form a tongue that is insertable in a hole drilled in the wall to accommodate the socket, the webs then reverting to their outstretched condition to cause the shank which is now behind the wall to recover its diamond formation. When a self-tapping screw is turned into the socket bore, it acts to thread the bore.
