Including Means Utilizing Pump Fluid For Augmenting Cooling, Lubricating, Sealing, Or Cleaning Of Motor Patents (Class 417/366)
  • Patent number: 5028218
Abstract: An immersion pump assembly comprises a pump and a wet-rotor motor driving the pump and having a common hollow spindle for the motor and the pump. Liquid in the wet-rotor compartment of the motor can be introduced into the spindle and conveyed within the spindle into the pump casing in heat exchange relationship with the liquid conveyed by the pump, by way of the wall of the spindle. The liquid is returned from the spindle into the rotor compartment by a pumping action. The exit and return openings for the liquid in the rotor compartment are spaced from each other axially of the pump assembly.

Abstract: A regenerative rotary pump in an automotive fuel pump assembly. The rotary pump has a disc-shaped impeller in a circular cavity of a housing, vanes around the circumference of the impeller separated by pockets, a donut-shaped pumping chamber in the housing enveloping the vanes and the pockets on the impeller, a two-stage stripper between a discharge at a high pressure end of the pumping chamber and an inlet at a low pressure end of the pumping chamber, and a vent chamber between a high pressure stage and a low pressure stage of the two-stage stripper. The vent chamber is connected to the fuel tank removed from the inlet. High pressure gasoline carried by the pockets between the vanes flashes to vapor in the vent chamber to minimize the vapor jet stream effect at the inlet end of the pumping chamber.

Abstract: A vacuum pump with a seal structure for a pump unit of the vacuum pump and a driving mechanism for rotating a rotor in the pump stages of the pump is disclosed. The seal structure is provided with a narrow gap sealing arrangement formed by a stationary member which is opposed to the portion of a shaft of the driving mechanism which is between the pump unit and an upper bearing supporting the same shaft, which narrow gap sealing arrangement comprises first, second and third seal portions; a mechanism for supplying a discharge gas to the first seal portion; and a mechanism for supplying a purge gas to the second and third seal portions. Owing to these parts, the feed rate of the purge gas can be minimized, and the entry of the oil mist, which occurs during the lubrication of the bearing, into the interior of the pump unit can be prevented. This enables the interior of the pump unit to be kept clean.

Abstract: An open-vane regenerative impeller for a fuel pump. The impeller has a ring-like body portion from which a plurality of open-vane impeller vanes extend radially out and a plurality of fan blades extend radially in. The impeller is disposed in a closed cavity between two pump bodies with the vanes in an annular pumping chamber and the fan blades in a cylindrical vapor collection chamber radially inboard of the pumping chamber. The fan blades operate to blow vapor out of the vapor collection chamber through a vapor discharge slot in one of the pump bodies when rotation of the impeller commences thereby to enhance the initial vacuum at the inlet port to the pumping chamber.

Abstract: A slinger for a submersible electric pump protects a motor shaft bearing as well as a shaft seal. The slinger is provided with four, inclined, curved projections or vanes which are operable to propel sand or other potentially abrasive, grit-like contaminants away from an area adjacent the shaft seal. A pair of outlet slots disposed horizontally adjacent a lowermost portion of the slinger cooperates with the vanes to enable passage of the contaminants to an area external of the pump, such that the contaminants do not accumulate within the pump itself and the likelihood that the contaminants will enter the first pump stage is significantly reduced. Each of the vanes has a face inclined slightly relative to the frustoconical outer surface of the slinger, and each face terminates in a curved leading edge and a curved trailing edge. The vanes direct the contaminants toward the lowermost portion of the slinger where maximum outward thrust is developed.

  • Patent number: 4684329
Abstract: A canned motor pump has a pump section and a canned motor section connected thereto. A portion of the liquid from the pump section is diverted past a front bearing of the pump shaft and then back into the pump intake. Another portion of diverted liquid flows between the stator and the rotor in the canned motor section, and then past a rear shaft bearing, and then is returned to the pump intake. The resistance to flow of the liquid past the front bearing is made substantially greater than that past the rear bearing, so that the total flow diverted from the pump section for purpose of lubricating the front and rear bearings is substantially less than if the two resistances were equal. The resistance to liquid flow of the rear bearing can be reduced by providing it with straight channels parallel to the axis of shaft rotation, or helical channels in the direction the liquid tends to flow.
