  • Patent number: 5143703
Abstract: An improved system for performing an alkylation process and a method for handling liquid catalyst in an alkylation process. This improvement involves a method and apparatus by which liquid alkylation catalyst contained in alkylation process equipment can be safely stored and isolated from the external environment. Additionally, the apparatus improvement will allow for an improved method for controlling the circulation of liquid alkylation catalyst by providing means for quickly stopping the circulation of alkylation catalyst. The apparatus improvement comprises a baffle contained within a vessel which is attached to the bottom of the vessel and extends upwardly into the vessel. The baffle is designed to allow for the liquid flow between the inside of the vessel and the inside of the baffle and it allows for the venting into a vapor space from the top of the baffle. Within the baffle is standpipe which provides for fluid flow from within the baffle to a region outside the vessel.

  • Patent number: 4927606
Abstract: This invention provides an improved apparatus for stripping hydrocarbons from spent catalyst which has been used in effecting hydrocarbon conversion reactions prior to the regeneration of this catalyst by combustion of carbon deposits upon the catalyst. The invention is described in terms of its use in FCC processes, since such processes are the most common application of the invention. In order to better distribute stripping gas, which is normally steam, so that the gas contacts and passes through substantially all of the catalyst, distribution ports are added to the skirts of the stripper baffles which direct catalyst flow in a generally side-to-side manner as it moves downward through a stripping vessel. The ports are sized to vary penetration of the stripping gas into the stream catalyst that moves past the grids. Use of these ports increases the amount of hydrocarbons removed from the spent catalyst and/or decreases stripping gas requirements.

  • Patent number: 4208375
Abstract: A mixing device and method of mixing a liquid, vapor, or gas into a slurry of material in a vat in which the liquid, vapor, or gas is introduced into a stream of the slurry passing from the vat through a venturi at the diverging portion of the venturi, and in which the slurry with the entrained liquid, vapor, or gas is returned to the vat below an umbrella of a high velocity stream of slurry in the vat produced by an agitator so as to dissipate the heat of reaction between the two fluids.

  • Patent number: 4205046
Abstract: There is disclosed a reactor designed to produce phosphoric acid by wet process. The reaction vessel proper is a cylindrical body divided into two compartments by a sinusoidal wall. The first space formed inside by the cylindrical wall of the vessel and the sinusoidal one and by one curved segment joining them is semi-circular and serves as pre-mixer provided with a stirring device and a pocket to allow the fluid flowing down through the bottom to reach the reaction space overhead. The reaction vat has two compartments and provided with a series of stirring devices so located as to permit an efficient, intimate mixture of the reaction medium. The vat is integrally roofed by a tight cover with many orifices left in it fitted for connection sleeves, such as: supply, gas venting, sight holes, and manholes, etc.

  • Patent number: 4203961
Abstract: The entrainment of reaction medium in the vapor phase is decreased in a chlorine dioxide generator producing a gaseous mixture of chlorine dioxide, chlorine and steam from a boiling reaction medium and wherein generator liquor is recycled with make up chemicals by providing a tangential entry of recycled liquor to the generator in the vapor space above the liquid level in the generator and a helically-arranged baffle projecting inwardly from the generator wall at least in the height of the generator corresponding to the tangential entry opening into the vapor space. The baffle is arranged to be above the trajectory of the recycled liquor as it enters the generator. Decreased liquor entrainment enables the generator diameter to be decreased, with consequentially decreased capital costs.

  • Patent number: 4200614
Abstract: A turbine mixer for a polyethylene reactor of the stirred autoclave type in which a turbine rotor is mounted on a rotating stirrer shaft extending along the longitudinal axis of the reactor and a turbine stator is mounted adjacent to and upstream of the rotor. The turbine mixer is positioned in the final stage of a three-stage, stirred autoclave reactor, and a baffle plate is positioned so as to extend across the reactor at the inlet to the final zone. The mixer produces intense stirring of the reactor materials within the final stage, but does not cause significant backmixing into the reactor zone immediately upstream thereof. The turbine mixer may also be utilized in other zones of the reactor wherein intense axial mixing of the reactor materials is required, in which case the baffle plate would be omitted so as to produce intensive axial mixing of the reactor materials within that zone.

  • Patent number: 4198383
Abstract: Method and apparatus for continuous preparation of an acrylonitrilebutadienestyrene copolymer comprises on-stream mounted: a prepolymerization reactor, a polymerization reactor, a reactor for the final polymerization and an apparatus for the removal of the non-polymerized monomers from the reaction mass. The polymerization reactor contains a stirring means which has a tube fixedly mounted coaxially with a shell and a mixing member disposed inside the tube. The stirring member is embodied in the form of a closed cylinder. At least one slot is provided in the tube wall. This slot is extending over the entire length of the tube. In the reactor there is also a partition positioned between the reactor shell wall and the stirring member. The partition is passing through the middle of the slot and intended for division of the reactor shell cavity into a suction zone and a pumping zone.

  • Patent number: 4176157
Abstract: A method and apparatus for calcining calcium sulphate dihydrate in a calcination vessel in which the dihydrate is heated in the vessel to calcination temperature not only by heat applied to the exterior of the vessel but also by hot gas, especially hot gaseous combustion products, supplied into the interior of the mass of calcining material within the vessel. The supply of hot gas according to the invention can improve the production rate in both batch and continuous calcination operations without adversely affecting the product quality, by permitting increase in the heat input to the vessel without entailing the risk of vessel bottom burn-out.
