Control Means Responsive To Or Actuated By Means Sensing Or Detecting A Condition Or Material Triggered Patents (Class 425/135)
  • Patent number: 4667852
Abstract: Apparatus for preparing and dispensing thermoplastic resin has a conveyor or extruder with a chamber provided with heating elements, a conveyor or extruder screw mounted in the chamber and connected to a drive motor, a resin inlet and a resin outlet. To ensure the intended continuous dispensing of the resin even during intermittent operation, a control device is provided having inputs connected to a resin pressure sensor, a conveyor speed of rotation sensor and a resin temperature sensor. Intended values for the conveyor speed, resin pressure and resin temperature are supplied to the control device, which regulates the pressure during interruption of the dispensing of the resin and effects a speed regulation or a pressure regulation with a superimposed speed regulation during dispensing of the resin. For plasticizing of the resin, which is supplied in solid, preferably granular form, and since the conveyor geometry by the heating elements is required.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling induced dynamic instability in an axially moving form supported between two axially spaced supports wherein the form is relatively soft and therefore exposed to development of transverse tensional forces tending to pivot the form about one or both supports. Control is effected by establishing a datum axis, repeatedly sensing the lateral position of the form in at least two mutually inclined transverse directions, deriving signals proportional to the sensed lateral displacement of the form from the datum axis, converting the signals to thrust forces, and applying the thrust forces to restore the form to the desired lateral position. The technique is of particular value in the production of oriented polymeric tubular films.

  • Patent number: 4636085
Abstract: A device is described which eliminates the pre-drying of particulate plastic prior to processing by an extrusion or injection molding machine. A tubular guide member directs particulate plastic under gravity into the feed inlet of the machine. During delivery, the temperature of the particulate plastic is raised with heated air flows to between about 150.degree.-200.degree. F. Suction is applied to the feed inlet of the machine to remove volatiles (primarily water) released when the temperature of the particulate plastic is increased by contact with the heated barrel and screwdriver of a machine. Temperature and suction controls permit selection of operating temperature and suction levels that ensure removal of volatiles prior to any extensive plasticization and transfer along the barrel which would otherwise preclude proper removal of volatiles.

Abstract: Disclosed is a hydraulically controlled extruder injection molding unit which includes a measured value pick-up for the position of the piston rod of the working cylinder and/or of the injection piston. A pressure control valve which can be switched on is provided in the line leading to the surge chamber of the working cylinder for the piston. A proportionally controlled pressure valve is provided in the line to the other surge chamber, the value being controlled as a function of dropping control values when switching from subsequent pressure to dynamic pressure until the measured value pick-up emits an output signal. The then existing instantaneous value of the dynamic pressure is then added to the preselected dynamic pressure. Consequently, the dynamic pressure phase takes place under a corrected dynamic pressure.

The switch is automatically actuated by this back-pressure and produces a signal. Abstract: A process and apparatus therefor are described for reclaiming waste material from a fiberizing system and for converting a molten stream of material into reclaimable cullet when the system is not fiberizing. When the system is fiberizing the waste is collected in a dry environment and continually conveyed away; when the system is not fiberizing the molten stream is reduced to cullet and collected in a wet environment and continually conveyed away; and when fiberizing is resumed there is a return to the collection of waste in a dry environment.

  • Patent number: 4197070
Abstract: A control system for a plastic extruder which automatically controls both the melt pressure and the melt temperature of the plastic material at the outlet of the extruder barrel. The extruder barrel is divided into a plurality of heating zones and a zone temperature control means individually controls the temperature of each zone in accordance with predetermined zone temperature set points. A melt temperature control means automatically adjusts certain zone temperature set points such that the actual melt temperature is maintained at its desired value. The speed of a rotatable extruder screw is controlled by a melt pressure control means such that the actual melt pressure is maintained at its desired value. In accordance with the present invention, a separate feedforward controller and separate feedback controller are provided in the melt temperature control loop and in each zone temperature control loop such that independent specification of set point and disturbance responses can be achieved.

  • Patent number: 4195048
Abstract: An absolute-coded angular position indicator coupled to the shiftable one of two mold-clamping plates, produces a position signal indicating the position of the shiftable plate. This signal is applied to one input of a subtractor, whose output signal is displayed on a numerical display. The subtracting input of the subtractor receives a corrective signal from a manually set decades switch arrangement. When no mold is present between the clamping plates and the latter are pressed into direct contact with each other, the displayed numerical value is zero. When a mold is clamped between the plates, an non-zero value is displayed, and the set-up technician sets the decades switch arrangement to the displayed value. As a result the displayed value goes to zero. The output signal of the subtractor is furnished to control elements which must control machine operations in dependence upon the height of the particular mold being employed.

  • Patent number: 4193167
Abstract: An improved molding apparatus is provided for forming patties from an agglomerable edible material, particularly meat in frozen flake cut form. The apparatus includes a rotating turret with a plurality of mold cavities and reciprocable pistons. The turret rotates between a feed station where the edible material is fed upwardly under pressure into the mold cavities and a discharge station where the formed patties are ejected and separated by a continuous cut-off band. An improved cut-off band is also provided in which the band is disposed at a slight angle to facilitate its entry into the interfaces between the bottom surfaces of the pistons and the formed patties. The leading corners of the pistons are chamfered to receive the blade. The band is looped between a pair of pulleys on adjustable supports for providing the desired inclination of the band. Scrapers and spray nozzles are provided to maintain the cleanliness of the band and the pulley grooves.

Abstract: Apparatus for monitoring and controlling the operation of a dual platen press used in the manufacture of nuclear fuel pellets is disclosed. The apparatus includes means for indicating the displacements of both platens and imposing the displacements of the platens on orthogonal axes such that the displacements jointly control the motion of a point which traces a lissajous figure representative of the displacement and relative velocity of the press platens. A second lissajous figure representing the desired platen movements and relative velocity may be superimposed on the first lissajous figure, differences between the first and second lissajous figures indicating deviations from the desired operation of the press. Alternately, a press operator may simply use the first lissajous figure constructed from the actual platen displacements to analyze the operation of the press. The completion of preselected portions of the first lissajous figure may be detected and used to trigger subsequent press operations.
