The wetting line is substantially straight when a significant amount of visible pigment separation does not occur at the chosen high line speed.

    Abstract: Binding between two members of a recognition pair, e.g. antigen-antibody is determined by utilizing a probe which includes a piezoelectric crystal with electrodes on two opposite faces of the crystal. The crystal carries one or more metal plates which may be the same or different than the electrodes, the metal plates having immobilized thereon a first member of a recognition pair. Binding of a second member of the recognition pair to the first member, or dissociation between the two members and release of the second member from the probe, causes a change of immobilized mass which results in a change to the probe's resonance frequency.

    Abstract: A system and a method for coating two sides of a laminate material is disclosed in which one side of the laminate material is coated with one substance and the second side is coated with a similar or different substance. Reverse roll coating may be used to coat the two surfaces of the sheet of laminate material. The method described is particularly suited for applying a substance providing balancing characteristics desirable in the end product to one side of the laminate material and applying a substance providing other characteristics desirable in the end product to the other side of the laminate material. For example, a balancing substance may be applied on one side of a kraft paper sheet and a substance providing structural bonding applied to the other side, thereby eliminating the need to use a discrete balancing sheet in a laminate.

As the central ply passes between opposingly located nip rolls, at least one additional ply is laminated to one side of the central ply and at least one other ply is laminated to the opposing side of the central ply.

A top of the plural drying zones is constructed of a blow regulation member so as to confront to the solution on the web. The blow regulation member has holes through which is exhausted a gas evaporated from the layer of the solution on the web.

    Abstract: The system and the method are used to determine the process viscosity (&mgr;) of a fluid (22) in a film metering device (10) used to form a film (24) to be applied on a substrate (20), such as a paper web or any other suitable flexible materials. The apparent shear rate ({dot over (&ggr;)}) of the fluid, indicative of the flow field, may also be calculated. These parameters are calculated using a pressure profile representing the pressure of the fluid between a transfer roll (12) and a metering rod (30) which controls the thickness of the coating film (24). The torque (T) applied on the metering rod (30) is also measured and taken into account in the calculations. The system and method allow the process viscosity (&mgr;) to be easily and accurately determined during the operation of the film metering device (10) without the need of testing the fluid in an external device and attempting to extrapolate the results to the process.
