One or more collection areas reside between the channeled areas at the topside of the mat and are of recessed elevation relative to the longitudinal ribs.     Abstract: The described embodiments relate to methods and apparatus for increasing rigidity of a metal housing while maintaining or reducing a wall thickness of the metal housing. More particularly a method for embedding a stiffener layer within an aluminum substrate is discussed. In one exemplary embodiment the stiffener layer can be a carbon fiber sheet applied to an inside surface of an unfinished housing and then subsequently covered by depositing a layer of aluminum over the carbon fiber in a solid-state deposition process. The deposited aluminum can adhere to the unfinished housing around or through the carbon fiber layer to bond with the unfinished housing. Deposition parameters can be controlled to prevent damage to the carbon fiber sheet.

This results in a Composite which becomes very strong with a reduction in raw material costs, that is not only resistant to projectiles, but is also resistant to acid, blast overpressure, backface deformation, electromagnetic pulse and direct flame in excess of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Carbon nanotubes grown on the nanostructured flake substrates can have very high aspect ratios. Further, the carbon nanotubes can be aligned on the nanostructured flake substrates. Through routine optimization, the nanostructured flake substrates may be used to produce single-wall, double-wall, or multi-wall carbon nanotubes of various lengths and diameters. The nanostructured flake substrates produce very high yields of carbon nanotubes per unit weight of substrate. Methods for making the nanostructured flake substrates and for using the nanostructured flake substrates in carbon nanotube synthesis are disclosed.
