The bilaterally extending protuberances increase the caliper and texture of the consumer product embodied in the cellulosic fibrous structure. In a second embodiment, the protuberances extend outwardly, and are induced by fluid embossing, rather than mechanical embossing. Also disclosed is a fluid embossing process for making such cellulosic fibrous structures.

    Abstract: A heat-adhesive paper sheet suitable for use as fusuma paper and shoji paper in a Japanese style house, wallpaper, ceiling paper, liner for paintings and calligraphic works, and liner for plywood, and which is adhered to the object with heat by ironing. The heat-adhesive paper sheet is composed of a paper sheet material having a projection-depression pattern formed on the surface thereof by creping or embossing or the like and a layer of a thermoplastic thermal shrinking pressure-sensitive adhesive provided on one surface of the paper sheet material. Even though the surface of the object to which the paper sheet is stuck is somewhat rough and uneven, the heat-sensitive adhesive layer may easily be fused so that the paper sheet may be well applied to the object under light pressure without forming wrinkles on the applied sheet. Steam ironing, which has heretofore been unacceptable, is applicable to this paper sheet for sticking it to an object.

The stitches 10 substantially restrict the extensibility of the crepe paper sheet 5 and the apparent projections 13 are formed at a position in the crepe paper sheet 5 directly in line with the ends 11 of the stitches 10.According to the preferred method described, each apparent projection 13 is in reality a depression between two projections formed in the opposite surface of the crepe paper sheet without puncturing the paper. In an alternative embodiment there is a pair of apparent projections 13 formed in the crepe paper sheet 5 between adjacent rows of stitches 10.

The paper is embossed to form in the paper a midplane and an array of bosses extending up and down from the formed midplane. Each upward extending boss is flanked on two sides, in each of two directions, by a downward extending boss, and in at least one of the two directions, the paper between an upward extending boss tip and an adjacent downward extending boss tip on one side has a higher strain than the paper between the upward extending boss tip and an adjacent downward extending boss tip on the opposite side. The forming of a higher strain region and a lower strain region on opposite sides of a boss can be accomplished by forming asymmetric bosses with each upward extending boss rotated 180.degree. about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the paper with respect to its adjacent downward extending bosses.

    Abstract: A flexible and durable paper-based web particularly useful as label stock for flexible, squeezable containers. The paper web includes a substrate containing cellulose papermaking fibers. The substrate contains a fine crepe pattern that has been subjected to pressure to smooth the substrate surface. The substrate also contains as a saturant between about 15 and 75 parts by weight per 100 parts of fiber of a soft polymer saturant characterized by a glass transition in temperature from about -45.degree. C. to 0.degree. C. The resulting saturated substrate has a flexibility in the range of from about 10 mg. to 50 mg. generally and an elongation in the range of from about 15% to 35% generally with a Sheffield smoothness in the range of from about 20 to 250 generally. These properties are unique in a paper web and provide highly beneficial results in use as labels which may be repeatedly flexed on a squeezable container without wrinking.

The color which is printed in the regions in which the lacquer layer is to be thinner than in the other regions contains a lacquer repellent, and the printed and dried paper film is impregnated with an aqueous impregnation of a melamine resin from the unprinted side, with the formation of a one-sided excess of resin, and is dried. The printed and impregnated film is coated on the printed side with an aqueous lacquer based on melamine resins, and the lacquered film is hardened at elevated temperature without applying pressure. A laminate is produced by joining the unprinted side of the hardened film to a substrate such as chipboard.

The wet substrate delivery system may be used, for example, for hand hygiene in hospitals, washrooms or kitchens.

    Abstract: Paper webs are produced in a modified conventional felted wet press process in which the fiber furnish has a chemical debonding agent added thereto in high concentrations. The web (17) is formed on a conventional Fourdrinier wire (12), transferred to a moving felt (19) which presses the web against the surface of a drying cylinder (23) to reduce its water content, and is carried by the surface of the drying cylinder (23) to a creping blade (24). Liquid adhesive is applied to the surface of the creping cylinder (23) adhead of the contact with the web to provide substantial adherence of the web to the creping surface at the point of contact with the creping blade. The levels of addition of debonding agent to the pulp furnish and the amount of adhesive applied to the creping surface are selected such that the adhesion of the web to the surface at the creping blade is greater than the internal cohesion of the web.
