  • Publication number: 20080261021
Abstract: The specification pertains to a single or multiple coated printing sheet in particular but not exclusively for sheet-fed offset printing with an image receptive coating layer on a paper substrate. The printing sheet has the property that it can be printed in an offset printing process without spraying a fine powder, usually called offset powder or dust powder, on the sheet as it comes off the press to prevent the ink from transferring to the back side of the next sheet. Also irradiative (UV or IR) drying on the sheet fed press is not necessary and/or the use of overprint varnish is not required. In addition to that, unexpectedly short times until reprinting and converting can be achieved. Furthermore methods for making such a printing sheet and uses of such a printing sheet are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20080081007
Abstract: A method for forming a porous coating with nanosize pores on a substrate includes the steps of (a) forming a suspension of sinterable particles in a carrier fluid; (b) maintaining the suspension by agitating the carrier fluid; (c) applying a first coating of the suspension to the substrate; and (d) sintering the sinterable particles to the substrate. A thin layer of this nanoporous coating is deposited onto a substrate having micropores. The substrate provides strength and structural support while the properties of the nano powder layer controls flow and filtration aspects of the device. This composite has sufficient strength for handling and use in industrial processes. Since the nano powder layer is thin, the pressure drop across the layer is substantially less than conventional thicker nano powder structures.

Another embodiment relates to an imaging element comprising an imaging layer and a base, wherein said base comprises an integral polymer sheet having at least one oriented polymer core and at least one unoriented polymer layer. The invention further relates to a process of manufacturing a base for an imaging element comprising the steps of extruding a voided core polymer sheet; orienting said extruded voided core polymer sheet; and extrusion coating said oriented extruded voided core polymer sheet with at least one unoriented polymer layer.

  • Patent number: 7087135
Abstract: A novel method of producing interpenetrating polymer network (“IPN”) sheeting. Particularly, an improved method of producing such sheeting and bonding it to a backing layer for use as various types of wound dressings and scar management products. The new process represents several improvements over previous techniques as follows: a) single-pass process, b) no second coating of liquid polymer required to act as glue, c) no solvents or other processing aids required, d) no additional oven length needed to effect the required dwell time, e) increased line speed relative to prior techniques, and g) the carrier substrate 20 need only be coated with a release surface on one side.

  • Patent number: 7074480
Abstract: A nanostructure is a porous body comprising a plurality of pillar-shaped pores and a region surrounding them, said region being an oxide amorphous region formed so as to contain C, Si, Ge or a material of a combination of them. Such a nanostructure can be used as functional material that can be used for light emitting devices, optical devices and microdevices. It can also be used as filter.

  • Patent number: 7074479
Abstract: Porous coatings on high-performance ceramics attempt to combine the mechanical and thermal characteristics, which fulfil stringent demands, of the substrate material with the advantageous properties of coating materials. The subsequent application of layers of this type to the pre-sintered substrate produces unsatisfactory results in several areas of use with regard to possible layer thickness, porosity and adhesion. According to the invention, a shaped body consisting of a sintered, inorganic material, whose surface comprises a porous layer is produced in such a way that the base body is first formed as a green body. A layer in the form of a suspension, also containing an inorganic material, is then applied to the surface or to one section of the surface of the base body. A predetermined fraction of a pore-forming substance is mixed with at least the material of said layer and the green body with its applied layer is subjected to the thermal treatments required for producing a monolithic sintered body.

  • Patent number: RE39339
Abstract: Compositions, methods, and systems for manufacturing articles, particularly containers and packaging materials, having a fiber-reinforced, starch-bound cellular matrix. Suitable mixtures used to form the articles are prepared by first preparing a viscous preblended mixture comprising water, a gelatinized starch-based binder, and fibers having an average length greater than about 2 mm. The highly viscous preblended mixture effectively transfers the shearing forces of the mixer to the fibers. The final moldable mixture is then prepared by mixing into the preblended mixture the remaining starch-based binder, water, and other desired admixtures, e.g., mold-releasing agents, inorganic filler rheology-modifying agents, plasticizers, coating materials, and dispersants, in the correct proportions to form an article which has the desired performance criteria.
