Patent number: 5240769Abstract: This invention relates to a packing used in sealing two members. As the packing material, by using a material having the surface of a flexible graphite sheet cut to a width of less than 5 mm with fibers, or a material prepared by laminating a flexible graphite sheet cut to a width of less than 5 mm with at least one of reinforcing fiber or foil material, and covering its surface with fibers, or a material prepared by impregnating a principal component composed of flexible graphite particles with at least one of short fiber, rubber, resin or lubricant to form a bar-like structure and covering its surface with fibers, a packing material which can be either twisted or braided is obtained. By fabricating a packing by using any one of such packing materials, a cord-like packing is obtained without having to produce many packings matched to with the dimensions of the members.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1992Date of Patent: August 31, 1993Assignee: Nippon Pillar Packing Co. Patent number: 5234765Abstract: High tensile and torque strength threads are provided on a thermoplastic composite rod by first cutting a thread at a relatively short pitch into an end of the rod. Thermoplastic composite tape is then wound in tight conformance to the cut thread so that the fibers of the tape align with the desired helix angle of the thread to be created. The rod and the tape are heated at their junction to above melt temperatures during the winding process to increase adhesion between the rod and the tape. While the end of the rod and the wound tape are at above melt temperatures, the end of the rod and the tape are compressed in a die conforming to the desired ultimate configuration of the thread. The tape and rod are then permitted to cool until sufficiently hardened to permit release of the compressing die without deformation of the threaded end of the tape. The result is a thermoplastic composite rod having high tensile and torque strength at its threaded end.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1991Date of Patent: August 10, 1993Inventors: Scott R. Patent number: 5225262Abstract: A high temperature, high pressure resistant packing (e.g., for the packing gland of a valve stem) has a core of density 1.3-1.6 gm/cc that includes a plurality of strands, each strand including a flexible graphite tape, longitudinally corrugated and folded into at least two longitudinally extending partially superimposed layers. Preferable, each strand is overknitted with a reinforcing wire, the strands in the core are braided, and a jacket, which includes a carbide fiber, an inorganic fiber, and a phenolic fiber, is disposed about the core.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1991Date of Patent: July 6, 1993Assignee: A. Patent number: 5221571Abstract: The present invention provides a plastic packaging for fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. The film comprises 1 to 10% Activated Earth incorporated in polyethylene. The Activated Earth modifies the gas permeabilities of the film so that it interacts with the metabolic activity of the fresh produce modifying the atmosphere around it. It does this by modifying the permeability of the film to the various atmospheric gases. The Activated Earth is characterized by its predominantly porous aluminium/silicate composition, a pore diameter of 50,000 Angstroms, a specific surface of 0.6 m.sup.2 /gm and a specific gravity of 2.3.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1991Date of Patent: June 22, 1993Assignee: Ausdel Pty. Patent number: RE34742Abstract: Disclosed is a shaped article comprising a continuous oriented polymer matrix having dispersed therein microbeads of a polymer which are at least partially boredered by void space, the microbeads being present in an amount of about 5-50% by weight based on the weight of said oriented polymer, said void space occupying about 2-60% by volume of said shaped article. Preferably, the microbeads are cross-linked to an extent they will be resilient and elastic at the orientation temperature, and are coated with a slip agent. The shaped article is preferably in the form of a sheet, fibers, or other molded article, preferably has a relatively low specific gravity and whiteness.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1991Date of Patent: September 27, 1994Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: Larry K.
