Abstract: Compositions and methods for fabrication or synthesis of high aspect ratio (up to >150) CdS:Mn/ZnS core/shell nanowires (CSNWs) is disclosed for the first time. The CSNW solvothermal synthesis involved two steps—the formation of Mn doped CdS core followed by the growth of a ZnS outer shell. The nanowire growth process is engineered in such a way that the ZnS layer grows radially onto the prematurely grown CdS:Mn core prior to the formation of its well faceted surface. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and other characterization techniques confirmed the formation of uniform, thin (5-8 nm in diameter) CSNWs with high aspect ratio up to >150. This solvothermal method is simple, versatile and useful in a large scale production process to synthesize thin ultra-long CSNWs with and without dopants.

  • Patent number: 7892632
Abstract: This invention pertains to a product and a method for preparing same. The product is an electrically conducting metallized fibers and a non-conducting composite containing the metallized fibers. In a preferred embodiment, the product is a composite of metallized cellulose fibers disposed in an electrically non-conducting matrix. The method includes the steps of hydrating cellulose fibers to prevent absorption of chemical reagents; activating the cellulose surface of the fibers for metal deposition; removing from the fibers excess activator and reagents used in the activation; drying the fibers to a free-flowing condition whereby the fibers acquire the color of the activator by virtue of its deposition on the fibers; metallizing the fibers to deposit thereon a metal capable of absorbing electromagnetic radiation; drying the metallized fibers whereby they are free-flowing; and forming a composite composed of an electrically non-conductive matrix having dispersed therein the matallized fibers.

Abstract: This application relates to the use of a wire comprising a coating of a bio plastics material as a bookbinding wire or paperclip. The coating is a closed coating offering the wire a good corrosion protection when exposed at normal ambient conditions during use as bookbinding wire or as paperclip and the coating is degradable, biodegradable or compostable once said wire is exposed to an environment suitable for decomposition of said coating. More particularly, the application relates to the use of and to a bookbinding wire and paperclip with a PLA coating. The application further relates to a method for recycling said bookbinding wires and paperclips.

Abstract: A steel filament adapted for the reinforcement of elastomer or for thermoplastic products has a carbon content ranging up to 0.20 per cent by weight. The steel filament is provided with a coating promoting the adhesion with elastomer or thermoplastic products. The steel filament is drawn until a final diameter of less than 0.60 mm and a final tensile strength of more than 1200 MPa. Intermediate heat treatments are avoided so that the carbon footprint of the steel filament is substantially reduced.

  • Patent number: 7865047
Abstract: Telecommunication cable having an elongated element housing at least one transmitting element. The elongated element has a water-soluble polymeric composition of a vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate copolymer having a saponification degree of about 60% to about 95%; a plasticizer; a hydrolysis stabilizer compound having a chelant group having two hydrogen atoms bonded to two respective heteroatoms selected from nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur. The two hydrogen atoms have a distance between each other of 4.2×10?10 m to 5.8×10?10 m. The stabilizer compound is present in an amount of at least 0.75 mmoles per 100 g of copolymer. The elongated element is in particular a buffer tube housing a plurality of optical fibers. The presence of the stabilizer reduces the increase of the hydrolysis degree of the copolymer upon aging, thus maintaining the desired water blocking properties of the copolymer.
