  • Patent number: 7368166
Abstract: A metallic glass-coated microwire has controllable surface porosity. The porosity is achieved by etching the metallic glass-coated microwire or other shapes of glass-coated bodies with acid after annealing to produce a multi-phase glass coating. Porous metallic glass-coated microwires are found to make superior PCR machines, which find use in a variety of in vivo, biochemical, and chemical sensors. Advantageously, the PCR apparatus is smaller, less expensive to construct than conventional units. It readily carries out in vivo passive or active operations.

Abstract: This invention generally relates to the production of a composite yarn or non-woven strand wherein a core of super absorbent fibers or polymers (SAP's) having a swell factor of approximately 25% and greater are encapsulated by a nonwoven membrane of defined porosity. The membrane is then sealed in a fashion to generally deter or prevent the SAP material from migrating out of the core as water is freely absorbed and desorbed from the composite yarn structure. The strands of yarns or strips of non-woven material are subsequently constructed into an open or unorientated fabric formation. When used as a subterranean fabric, structure or material, the resultant fabric structure retains moisture while permitting normal root growth and allowing excess water to pass through and beneath the fabric while facilitating movement of water from lower levels to the surface.

  • Patent number: 7354645
Abstract: A metallic glass-coated wire is formed by drawing a hollow glass fiber from a container in which molten alloy is entrained and solidified. Interference stresses extant between the glass coating and the alloy core of the wire are produced by systematically controlling thickness and mechanical elastic properties of the glass. The interference stress is tailored by selection of glass thickness and chemistry to optimize wire drawing process conditions, such as drawing temperature and strain rate. In addition, the interference stress is especially tailored to assure physical integrity of the glass-alloy composite wire product. Local property variations along the wire length are minimized, facilitating production of discrete wire segments especially suited for use in EAS applications.

  • Patent number: 7344776
Abstract: The invention relates to the production of composite cathodes and anodes for lithium batteries, and the cathodes and anodes thereby produced. The active mass in the form of a thin film is incorporated into a material, or the active mass together with a matrix metal or a matrix alloy is deposited on a substrate. The invention also relates to a metallised, textile material made of insulating fibres which have been made conductive and which have been completely galvanically or electrolessly plated. The fibres lying on crossovers are not baked with other fibres, but can move freely. The surface of the material is thereby optimally used. Said material is preferably used as an anode or a cathode for batteries, especially a lithium battery, and fuel cells. During the galvanising or electroless application stage in the production of the material, the fibres in the material move relatively to each other in order to avoid baking.
