  • Patent number: 6387528
Abstract: The present invention provides a composition comprising an ion-trigger polymer coating joined to a water-sensitive substrate. When the composition is employed as a diaper outercover or a pantiliner baffle, for example, the ion-trigger coating is oriented toward the body and is exposed to bodily fluids. The coating inhibits the transport of the fluids to the inner, body-side water-sensitive substrate, maintaining the structural integrity of the composition. When the entire article is disposed of in a large volume of water, such as in the hydraulic flow of a toilet, both the water-sensitive substrate layer and the ion-trigger polymer coating layer mechanically weaken and break apart into small pieces.

  • Patent number: 6017640
Abstract: Opaquely pigmented or thick filmed powder coatings for heat sensitive substrates, such as wood, wood composites, for example, medium density fiber board, and plastics, that can be fully cured, especially near the substrate, through the incorporation of a dual cure system in the powder comprising a thermal initiator, such as a peroxide, along with a UV initiator. The UV initiator cures the surface, while the thermal initiator cures at the substrate. Surprisingly, virtually no pregelation occurs during the heated melt and flow out step prior to UV curing. Consequently, the hardened film finish formed on the surface exhibits exceptional smoothness which is comparable to that of traditional UV curable powders. The hardened film finish is also fully cured throughout and exhibits exceptional adhesion to the substrate which cannot be achieved with traditional UV curable powders that have been pigmented.

Abstract: The invention relates to a composition comprising a polymer and wood fiber composite that can be used in the form of a linear extrudate or thermoplastic pellet to manufacture structural members. The polymer and wood fiber composite structural members can be manufactured in an extrusion process or an injection molding process. The linear extrudate or pellet can have a cross-section of any arbitrary shape, or can be a regular geometric. The pellet can have a cross-section shape having a volume of at least about 12 mm.sup.3. Preferably the pellet is a right cylindrical pellet having a minimum radius of about 1.5 mm and a minimum length of 1 mm weighing at least 14 mg. The invention also relates to an environmentally sensitive recycle of waste streams. The polymer and wood fiber composite contains an intentional recycle of a waste stream comprising polymer flakes or particles or wood fiber.

  • Patent number: 6004642
Abstract: A tape laminate comprising an internally separable layer having first and second opposite major anchor surfaces, which separable layer has an internal static shear strength in a direction parallel to its anchor surfaces that allows it to support a significant weight (e.g., at least 6 pounds per square inch), and has an internal dynamic tensile strength in a direction generally normal to its anchor surfaces of no greater than 40 pounds per square inch. The major anchor surfaces of the separable layer are bonded to the opposed surfaces of objects (which bonding can be done with strips of stretch release adhesive) so that the laminate can support one object from the other against a static force generally parallel to said anchor surfaces of at least 6 pounds per square inch, whereas the separable layer can be internally separated by a dynamic separating force normal to said anchor surfaces of no greater than about 40 pounds per square inch to separate the objects.

  • Patent number: 5968634
Abstract: A paper or transparency receiving toner to be fixed by heat has an ionomeric resin on its outer surface. For universal application, the outer layer is a blend of non-ionomeric resin, such as styrene acrylate copolymer, and an ionomer, which permits the material of the toner to molecularly intermingle with the blend during heat fixing. Irradiation raises the melting point of the ionomeric resin to prevent delamination. The resulting printing is strongly bonded to the substrate and is of excellent quality.
