    Abstract: A photopolymerizable system is provided as a latex system that is an oil-in-water polymer emulsion including particulates of water-insoluble polymers in combination with a water-soluble or water-dispersible, light-sensitive polymer having multiple light-sensitive moieties. Prior to coating onto a substrate, the system is a three-phase precursor emulsion of the emulsion particulates, the water phase, and the light-sensitive polymer. After coating, the bulk of the water phase is evaporated off, leaving a two-phase system of the emulsion particulates surrounded by the light-sensitive polymer. When selected areas are subjected to actinic radiation, a water-insoluble matrix is formed, the matrix containing cross-linked light-sensitive polymer having dispersed therethrough and/or included therein the water-insoluble polymer particulates, thus forming oleophilic image areas.

    Abstract: A base plate adapted to be coated with a light-sensitive diazo resin, and a lithographic plate which may be prepared therefrom. The base plate includes a substrate comprising a metal support and having a water-wettable, hydrophilic surface. Over the substrate and in direct contact with the surface is a layer comprising an oleophilic ink-receptive organic resin adapted to receive a light-sensitive coating comprising a diazo resin sensitizer. The oleophilic resin layer is permeable to the sensitizer so that it may penetrate substantially through the resin layer to establish sufficient contiguity between the diazo resin and the substrate so that both the light-sensitive coating and the organic resin layer become anchored to the substrate in the areas of exposure when the light-sensitive coating is exposed to light. Methods of preparing the base plate and lithographic plate are also disclosed.

    Abstract: Presensitized lithographic plates having a diazo layer are prepared such that they exhibit a photospeed rendering them suitable for ultra high speed operations including use within laser platemaking systems. These ultra high speed plates have a diazo layer that is exceedingly thin while still being generally uniformly distributed throughout the plate area. The process includes extracting a significant quantity of diazonuim compound or diazonium resin from a diazo layer on a presensitized plate substrate. Plates thus formed are useful in laser exposures for facsimile transmissions, as projection plates, as camera back plates, for step and repeat plate work, and where low intensity light sources are used in conjuction with very large plates.

    Abstract: A diazotype material useful for making duplicates of continuous tone originals, such as X-ray films, comprising a transparent film support having a coating of a layer thereon consisting essentially of at least two light-sensitive diazo compounds having different photolysis rates, couplers for the diazo compounds, an ultraviolet radiation absorbing material and homogeneously distributed in the layer at least about 7% by weight, based on the weight of lacquer, of an inert particulate material such as silica. The use of this material makes it possible to approximate a logarithmic photolysis, thereby providing sufficient linearity in the corresponding characteristic curve to achieve the desired duplicating results.

    Abstract: Vesicular recording materials are described which include a sensitized layer comprising a polyeric vehicle for the sensitizing agent which is an acrylonitrile/substituted or unsubstituted styrene copolymer with at least 55 mole % of acrylonitrile and preferably less than 85 mole %. The copolymer is usually homogeneous and preferably derived from acrylonitrile and the styrene comonomer along and most preferably contains from 65 to 82 mole % of acrylonitrile. The copolymer is softenable on heating to permit the gas released by the sensitizing agent in the light struck areas to form light-scattering or reflecting vesicles therein.A surfactant in an amount of at least 1% by weight, based on the weight of the copolymer, is essential to vesiculation and anionic surfactants are especially effective in providing a wide tonal range and good speed rating, amounts up to 20% by weight being preferred.
