    Abstract: Portal radiographic elements and a process of confirming the targeting of a beam of X-radiation of from 4 to 25 MVp using the portal radiographic elements are disclosed. The X-radiation is directed at a shield containing a port to create a beam. The beam is directed at a selected anatomical feature of a patient over a period of at least 30 seconds. The portion of the beam that passes through the patient impinges on a metal screen, causing it to emit electrons, and the electrons impinge upon a fluorescent screen, causing it to emit light that exposes a portal verification radiographic element to create a latent image in light-sensitized silver halide grains. A processor is employed to convert the latent image to a viewable silver image from which intended targeting of the X-radiation beam can be verified.

The fractured pieces are joined edge-to-edge at the fracture line and bonded with epoxy adhesive. The method succeeds because the dimensions of the fracture line after bonding is within the reregistration tolerance of commercial step-and-repeat cameras and the reregistration capability of the camera allows normal exposure of sites that do not intersect the fracture line.

    Abstract: A mammographic medical diagnostic radiographic element is disclosed having emulsion layers coated on opposite surfaces of a transparent film support. To facilitate rapid processing the emulsion layers are fully forehardened and less than 35 mg/dm.sup.2 of hydrophilic colloid is coated on each major surface. To reduce crossover and hydrophilic colloid, emulsions on the opposite sides of the support are each divided into two layers with the layer coated nearest the support containing a particulate dye capable of being decolorized during processing. Particulate dye and silver halide grains together account for between 30 and 70 percent of the total weight of the emulsion layers. Combined with the use of spectrally sensitized tabular grain emulsions crossover can be reduced to less than 15 percent while processing can be completed in less than 45 seconds. The distribution of hydrophilic colloid and silver halide grains chosen achieves low wet pressure sensitivity.

The oxide layer is then etched, removing thinner regions 32 of the oxide layer but leaving at least a fraction of the thicker portions 34 of the oxide layer to be used as a patterned hard mask. Then the exposed fluorinated layer not covered by the patterned oxide hard mask, is etched, to expose areas of the processable layer 18 not covered by the oxide hard mask, for subsequent patterned processing.

    Abstract: An X-ray source such as a synchrotron which provides a significant spectral content of hard X-rays is used to expose relatively thick photoresist such that the portions of the photoresist at an exit surface receive at least a threshold dose sufficient to render the photoresist susceptible to a developer, while the entrance surface of the photoresist receives an exposure which does not exceed a power limit at which destructive disruption of the photoresist would occur. The X-ray beam is spectrally shaped to substantially eliminate lower energy photons while allowing a substantial flux of higher energy photons to pass through to the photoresist target. Filters and the substrate of the X-ray mask may be used to spectrally shape the X-ray beam. Machining of photoresists such as polymethylmethacrylate to micron tolerances may be obtained to depths of several centimeters, and multiple targets may be exposed simultaneously.

    Abstract: Fine, sub-micron line features and patterns are created in a sensitized layer on a semiconductor wafer by a beam of low wavelength radiation, such as X-rays or Gamma-rays. A stream of such radiation is concentrated and collimated by a concentrator, the output of which is disposed in close proximity to the sensitized surface of the wafer. In this manner, the sensitized surface can be converted from one chemical state to another chemical state, essentially point-by-point. By moving one or the other of the beam or the wafer, line features can be converted in the sensitized surface. Typically, non-converted areas of the sensitized surface are removed, for further processing a layer underlying the sensitized surface.
