Abstract: Systems and methods facilitating training in clinical procedures via mixed reality simulations are disclosed. Such a system can comprise a physical model and a virtual model of an anatomic region associated with the procedure, wherein the virtual model associates tissue types with locations in the physical model. The system can include a tracking component that tracks locations of at least one clinical instrument relative to the models, and an anatomic feedback component that can produce perceptible changes in the physical model based on the interaction between the instrument and virtual model. A clinical device interface can detect outputs of clinical devices like electrical signals, pressure or flow, wherein feedback to the physical model depends on the tracked position of a clinical device and output from the same or different clinical device. Another component can generate feedback effects to the clinical device. Aspects can simulate anesthesiology procedures like local nerve blockade.

Abstract: An apparatus for analyzing a sound signal is based on an ear model for deriving, for a number of inner hair cells, an estimate for a time-varying concentration of transmitter substance inside a cleft between an inner hair cell and an associated auditory nerve from the sound signal so that an estimated inner hair cell cleft contents map over time is obtained. This map is analyzed by means of a pitch analyzer to obtain a pitch line over time, the pitch line indicating a pitch of the sound signal for respective time instants. A rhythm analyzer is operative for analyzing envelopes of estimates for selected inner hair cells, the inner hair cells being selected in accordance with the pitch line, so that segmentation instants are obtained, wherein a segmentation instant indicates an end of the preceding note or a start of a succeeding note. Thus, a human-related and reliable sound signal analysis can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 8491308
Abstract: It is intended to provide an endurance test apparatus whereby the behaviors of a vessel caused by a biomechanical burden can be simulated using a relatively simple constitution so that the endurance of a medical instrument (for example, a stent or an artificial vessel after anastomosis) can be tested in a similar state to an actual vessel, and an endurance test method therefor. Namely, an endurance test apparatus (10) comprises a simulated vessel (31) made of an elastic body, first and second holding members (32, 33) respectively supporting the both ends in the axial direction of the simulated vessel (31) and making the both ends relatively rotatable and interval-adjustable, and first and second motors (14, 15) operating these holding members (32, 33). The simulated vessel (31) is supported by the first and second holding members (32, 33) in a state stretched from its inherent length under a tensile force.

Abstract: A system for preventing surgical site errors includes a ferromagnetic, dry-erase whiteboard having a pair of anatomical figures imprinted thereon. Adjacent to the anatomical figures is a text space for writing a description of a planned surgical procedure. The system further includes a plurality of color-coded magnets for securing to representative locations on the anatomical figures. Each magnet has a specific color according to the area of the body requiring surgery. A medical worker places a color-coded magnet on one of the whiteboard anatomical figures at a location corresponding to the planned surgical site. The worker writes a description of the surgical procedure on the text space using a colored marker(s) that matches the magnet color(s) and then covers the patient with an identically-colored surgical drape. A surgeon first examines the whiteboard to identify the magnet location and color, then examines the written description and color and finally examines the drape color.

Abstract: Techniques for delivering medical care by improving decision making skills of medical personnel who deliver the care include receiving normal data that indicates normal conditions in a patient. Abnormality data is received from an author and indicates an abnormal condition in a patient. An instance of a virtual patient is generated based on the normal data and the abnormality data. The instance describes a sufficiently comprehensive physical state of a patient having the abnormal condition to simulate clinical measurements of the patient's condition. Action data is received from a trainee who is different from the author. Action data indicates a requested action relevant to dealing with the instance. Response data is generated based on the action data and the instance. Display data is presented to the trainee based on the response data. The display data indicates information about the instance available as a result of the requested action.
