Abstract: A method for delivering distance education for real clients, each either a teacher client or a student client, at multiple teaching sites and a system using the method are provided. A multi-layer arrangement is used to arrange computing servers to be one first-level server and one or more second-level servers each communicable with the first-level server. Each server serves real clients located in a pre-determined site. Furthermore, each server sets up a virtual client to execute the teacher client's activity command so as to locally generate application-specific data, which are then stored in this server. When a communication link to a student client is re-established after an activity interruption, resynchronization of the student client's learning-activity state with the teacher client's is regained based on the locally-generated application-specific data stored in the server that serves the student client without a need to burden other servers.

Abstract: An education support method includes searching for first student information corresponding to a student whose evaluation score has been improved and discussion information on the basis of evaluation-score-and-group information in which the discussion information identifying a group discussion, group information identifying a group, student information identifying a student and an evaluation score of the student are associated with one another; searching for second student information including group information associated to the first student information on the basis of the first student information and the discussion information; and generating created group information that is associated with the second student information and a selected student information. Abstract: According to an aspect of an embodiment, a method of providing a virtual class includes providing access to temporally-dimensioned educational material to participants of the virtual class in a social network. The method may also include capturing supplemental material generated by the participants interacting with each other in real-time in the social network. The method may also include associating the supplemental material with a range of relative time within the temporally-dimensioned educational material. The method may also include providing the temporally-dimensioned educational material to a client device associated with a participant of the virtual class. The method may also include providing the supplemental material to the client device for presentation at the client device during the range of relative time within the temporally-dimensioned educational material.

Abstract: A personal learning apparatus and method using a terminal which supports an electronic book function in a wireless communication network are provided. The personal learning method includes: distributing, by a master device, learning data to the terminal within a wireless communication service area; collecting, by the master device, learning results based on the learning data from the terminal provided with the learning data; and storing, by the master device, the collected learning results.

Abstract: An on-line teaching, learning and assessing system provides a teacher rapid feedback while teaching a classroom lesson on STEM principles by measuring student progress in learning the principles wherein student progress is measured by students' correct answers to assessment questions. The system includes at least one teacher computer and a plurality of student computers linked to the at least one teacher computer by a communications network. Each computer includes an input device and a touch sensitive screen for receiving handwritten input. The teacher inputs the teacher computer with at least one assessment question and at least one corresponding correct answer to the question, both inputs being handwritten using math expressions and STEM sketches. The student inputs the student computer with at least one student answer corresponding to the assessment question, the answer being handwritten using math expressions and STEM sketches.

Abstract: A method, system and computer program product for determining whether the social learning playlist is effective in educating participants. The text of the collection of online materials of a social learning playlist is scanned to identify key concepts (i.e., the most important points) using natural language processing. The user selects a concept from a list of key concepts, which includes these identified key concepts, and a type of question (e.g., true/false) to be used in assessing the understanding of the selected key concept. The selected type of question and answer to the question are generated using analytic analysis and artificial intelligence on the online materials of the playlist. In this manner, by generating appropriate question and answer pairs, where the questions are inserted at selected locations within the playlist, the creator of the playlist is able to assess whether the participants are understanding the key concepts in the playlist.

Abstract: A computer implemented system and method of sharing files between a link sharer and a link recipient over a network. The method comprises generating, in response to a request by a link sharer, a file sharing link to a file set, where the link does not provide a link recipient the ability to modify the contents of the linked file set. In response to receiving an indication that the generated link has been activated by a link recipient, displaying a representation of the linked file set with a display element configured to send a request for modification rights to the linked file set when activated by the link recipient. In response to receiving the request for modification rights, either automatically granting modification rights to the linked file set or sending notice to the link sharer indicating that the link recipient is requesting modification rights to the linked file set.

Abstract: A tool in a bioinformatics pipeline can include a smart wrapper and an executable. The smart wrapper can cause the executable to analyze the sequence data it receives and can also selectively change to the pipeline when circumstances warrant. In certain aspects, a system for genomic analysis includes a processor coupled to a non-transitory memory. The system is operable to present to a user a plurality of genomic tools organized into a pipeline. At least a first one of the tools comprises an executable and a wrapper script. The system can receive instructions from the user and sequence data—instructions that call for the sequence data to be analyzed by the pipeline—and select, using the wrapper script, a change to the pipeline.

Abstract: An information processing system implements a security system. The security system comprises a classifier configured to process information characterizing events in order to generate respective risk scores, and a data store coupled to the classifier and configured to store feedback relating to one or more attributes associated with an assessment of the risk scores by one or more users. The classifier is configured to utilize the feedback regarding the risk scores to learn riskiness of particular events and to adjust its operation based on the learned riskiness, such that the risk score generated by the classifier for a given one of the events is based at least in part on the feedback received regarding risk scores generated for one or more previous ones of the events.

Abstract: In various embodiments, tools, strategies, and techniques are provided for analyzing student performance and learning activity to facilitate enhancing the student experience in different learning environments. A learning analysis system can be provided that uses a statistical analysis framework for making inferences about the level of learning of both individual students and classes of multiple students in association with different knowledge components included in a learning domain.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides systems and techniques for delivering a realistic, engaging, personalized, online version of the case method pedagogy to one student or hundreds of thousands of students worldwide. A method may include presenting a first segment of instructional course content to a first user. A first input may be received from the first user and a portion of the first input that is associated with a second segment of instructional course content may be identified. As a result, the second segment of instructional course content may be presented to the first user. The method may also include receiving a second input from the first user. A portion of the second input that is associated with a third segment of instructional course content may be identified. Accordingly, the third segment of instructional course content may be presented to the first user.

Abstract: A multi-media conferencing system that integrates visual, audio, independent data interaction and modification, collaboration of information, independent video and 3D model viewing and manipulation, and networking among all participants in the meeting. Each participant conference display typically shows two content sectors under the control of the presenter and a selectable number of other content sectors under the control of the participant. The presenter conference display selectively includes a presenter dashboard for managing the presentation. Each content sector on the participant and attendee conference displays may be enlarged to full screen or reduced to a sector display or an icon with a simple command. The system also includes geo-location display functionality, participant monitoring, attendee chat functionality, and a wide range of additional functionality under the control of the conference presenter and attendees.

Abstract: A method, a user interface, and an educational content server for assisting a user in learning using interactive learning appliances are disclosed. The performance information of the user, which may be in the form of a user log file in an interactive learning appliance, may be received at a server computer from a site where the user is present. The performance information and profile information can then be presented in the user interface and used to generate an electronic content package. The electronic content package can then be received and loaded into the interactive learning appliance.

Abstract: One embodiment of the invention is directed to a method comprising electronically providing content to a user via a display on a learning apparatus wherein the content comprises a plurality of stationary image elements and a plurality of removable image elements at a plurality of locations on the display, detecting when a user shakes the learning apparatus, wherein the removable image elements move away from the plurality of locations, receiving an indication that one or more of the image elements has been selected by a user, and determining a location of placement of the one or more image elements by the user.

Abstract: A process for opening and reading a file over a network, including a WAN. An edge file gateway receives a request from an application to open a file cached with the edge file gateway at one point on a network and stored on a file server connected to a central server at another point on the network. The edge file gateway forwards the request to open the file to the central server, along with any offsets and lengths stored from any previous requests to read the file. The central server responds by sending any file data described in the offsets and lengths to the edge file gateway. When the edge file gateway receives a read request, the edge file gateway stores the offset and length for the request, if a predefined storage limit is not exceeded, and attempts to satisfy the request from cached file data.

Abstract: Systems and methods to enable users to communicate via a language learning exchange are provided herein. One aspect includes registering through a computing device one or more users in a user community of an online language learning platform, the one or more users associated with profile information comprising user name, native language, and language of interest elements; accessing language content for use by the one or more users; matching the one or more users with one or more complementary users; and making the language content available to the users via a language learning exchange interface.

Abstract: Methods and systems for educational intervention are disclosed. The methods can include receiving a user response and analyzing the user response and other user data to determine a user typology. The user typology can be compared with risk data that indicates the user's risk of failing to achieve a target outcome based on the identified user typology. If the user's risk of failing to achieve the target outcome exceeds a desired level, a mitigation plan can be generated and provided to the user to thereby facilitate in the attainment of the target outcome.

Abstract: A system and method providing passive verification of participant—typically a physician—exposure to Material equivalent to attendance at an Investigator Meeting prefatory to Clinical Trial is taught. The invention provides for rendering media capture of Investigator Meeting education into computer deliverable sessions, and further into segments, where segments are the product of randomly generated visual requests to which participant need provide response in some prescribed time interval to confirm visual attention to Material. To ensure participant visual exposure to Material, during computer mediated display of Material, visual prompts appear at random points in the display. For any successful participant response, session advances, and in absence of successful response, display of Material resets to last successful response point in Material. In an alternate embodiment, groups of viewers may be tracked corresponding to a group viewing of Material.

Abstract: A computer-based testing system includes testing stations connected to a testing service center and backend via the Internet for providing testing services. The system is operable to perform state management to implement fault recovery due to a computing device failure while a test is being administered. The system is also operable to utilize multiple caching techniques for mitigating network latency while administering tests.

Abstract: There is provided systems and method for account creation using a feature phone. A user is able to create an account through a feature phone using limited or no Internet access. A user may request to set up an account with a payment provider and the user is asked to confirm that certain information can be provided to the service provider, such as a name, address, and identifier. Once confirmed correct, the user enters the date of birth. The service provider then request and/or creates an email associated with the account. The service provider then calls the user enter a payment card number, along with an expiration date and security code, as a funding source for the account. The user further establishes a PIN for future transactions. Once confirmed, the account is active and ready to use.

Abstract: A method/apparatus/system for learning path recommendation based on student and learning vector context is disclosed. The incident learning object and the target learning object are identified. Learning paths between the incident learning object and the target learning object are identified, which learning paths each include a plurality of learning objects and learning vectors. A magnitude is calculated for the learning paths, which magnitude is based on the sum of the magnitudes of the learning vectors in each learning path. The magnitudes of the learning paths are compared, and one of the learning paths is selected based on the comparison of the learning paths and provided to a student.

Abstract: Systems and methods can track, at a group level, times for responding to educational questions. A set of users is identified as users enrolled in an academic course. A set of responses is accessed (e.g., after being received). Each response in the set of responses is one submitted via an electronic user device associated with a user in the set of users and is one submitted in response to one or more educational questions. For each response in the set of responses, an accuracy of the response is identified and a response time for the response is identified. The response time is indicative of a time between presentation of the one or more questions and submission the response. The identified response times for at least two responses in the set of responses are aggregated. A representation of the aggregation is caused to be presented.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method and apparatus for providing collaborative learning. In one embodiment, a method includes presenting a visual representation of a task in a first modality to a plurality of users in a group on a shared display and receiving a plurality of inputs from input devices associated with the respective users for solving the task. At least one of the inputs comprises a visual representation of the at least one input in a second modality that is different from the first modality and a successful completion of the task by the group requires a correct solution that is collectively dependent upon all of the inputs.

Abstract: A technology is provided. The technology enables availing a plurality of educational standards to a plurality of students. The standards are for a plurality of lessons to be at least partially taught via a plurality of teachers to the students. The technology further enables receiving a plurality of ratings from the students. Abstract: A learning management system and method displays a learning environment for delivery of instructional material to a remote student workstation student after authenticating a student at the remote student workstation. The learning environment displays a user interface to the student on the remote student workstation used to interact with an instructional material when the student enters into a learning session associated with a course when messages are communicated to and from the student. Communicated messages with the student are monitored to determine whether a message contains an unauthorized content and upon detection of an unauthorized content, an alert message is transmitted, for example, to an student associated with the course or to the student.

Abstract: A system controlling online access to a study course verifies the identity of an individual taking a study course over a global computer network from a first computer at a node of the network. The first computer has a biometric identification program and communicates over the network with a second computer that is at a network node other than a node of the first computer. The second computer includes study program material. The first computer operates a biometric reader, which obtains a first set of biometric data from the individual and a second set of biometric data from the individual while access is granted to course material. The biometric identification program compares the first set of data with the second set of data to make a verification of the identity of the individual and communicates the verification to the second computer.

Abstract: For courses that deal with media content, such as sound, music, photographic images, hand sketches, video, conventional techniques for automatically evaluating and grading assignments are generally ill-suited to direct evaluation of coursework submitted in media-rich form. Likewise, for courses whose subject includes programming, signal processing or other functionally-expressed designs that operate on, or are used to produce media content, conventional techniques are also ill-suited. Instead, it has been discovered that media-rich, indeed even expressive, content can be accommodated as, or as derivatives of, submissions using feature extraction and machine learning techniques. In this way, e.g., in on-line course offerings, even large numbers of students and student submissions may be accommodated in a scalable and uniform grading or scoring scheme.

Abstract: Techniques can construct a learner's educational context (e.g., course enrollments, subject-matter interests, and/or activity involvements) and tailor query processing using the educational context. For a given query, each concept in a set of concepts can be assigned a weight. The weight can depend on a query term in the query. For example, for a query including “North America”, a “geography” concept and a “history” concept can be determined to be related to the query, and weights can be influenced accordingly. Weights can also depend on a user's educational context (e.g., such that the “geography” weight is higher when a learner is enrolled in a geography course). A query time can also be analyzed in view of schedule data (e.g., indicating when particular topics are to be studied in a course). Weights can further depend on which concepts are recently, currently or will soon be of interest based on the schedule.

Abstract: A system for providing multi-language conference is provided. The system includes conference terminals and a multipoint control unit. The conference terminals are adapted to process a speech of a conference site, transmitting the processed speech to the multipoint control unit, process an audio data received from the multipoint control unit and output it. At least one of the conference terminals is an interpreting terminal adapted to interpret the speech of the conference according to the audio data transmitted from the multipoint control unit, process the interpreted audio data and output the processed audio data. The multipoint control unit is adapted to perform a sound mixing process of the audio data from the conference terminals in different sound channels according to language types, and then sends mixed audio data after the sound mixing process to the conference terminals.

In embodiments, a computing device may include an instruction module and an adaptation module operatively coupled with the instruction module. The instruction module may selectively provide instructional content of one of a plurality of instructional content types to a user of the computing device via one or more output devices coupled with the computing device. The adaptation module may determine, in real-time, an engagement level associated with the user of the computing device and may cooperate with the instruction module to dynamically adapt the instructional content provided to the user based at least in part on the engagement level determined.
