Abstract: The subject invention provides advantageous systems and processes for anaerobic digestion of organic waste streams, particularly agricultural waste streams. According to this invention, a new process is provided in which a liquid fraction from an organic waste stream comprising soluble compounds is segregated and incubated in a reactor separate from the solids fraction of the organic waste stream. Digestion of waste in both reactors occurs substantially simultaneously and both reactors produce biogas (thus both reactors function essentially like single stage reactors but allow for continuous or intermittent loading). According to one aspect of the invention, at least one cross-flow baffle is provided for use in an anaerobic digester to collect biogas and break up clumped solids in the reactor. In another aspect of the invention, packing media for use in an anaerobic digester is provided.

Abstract: Biofilm on glass beads deposited within a bottom portion of a vertically elongated bioreactor housing for possible experimental evaluation through a testing port in the housing which is also provided with inlet ports for aeration and infeed of nutrients with liquid. The biofilm collected within the housing chamber undergoes growth on glass slides within a cross-sectionally rectangular portion of the bioreactor housing from which the slides may be upwardly withdrawn under selective control without biofilm damage. The bioreactor housing arrangement also provides a high length to width ratio designed to enhance aeration.

  • Patent number: 7563371
Abstract: A tubular plug flow digester system assembled from manufactured components, including a holding/heating tank (15) connected to a manifold (14) that feeds a single or multiple parallel injection pumps (12). These pumps force feedstock though check valves (13) and into single or parallel digester hulls. This hulls are composed of manufactured parts including tapered end sections (11) and hull sections (10) that can be assembled onsite to a configuration that accommodates operational needs. Biogas produced by this digester is pressurized due to a liquid column created by an elevated effluent outlet (25). Feedstock is inoculated with relevant microorganisms that promote the generation of methane-rich biogas. Inoculation members (26) positioned within the hulls shelter biofilms containing these microbes while allowing regions of the biofilm to slough or naturally release microbes into the flowing feedstock stream. Biogas is collected through a manifold (22) and its release is controlled by a regulator or a valve.

  • Patent number: 7491453
Abstract: Systems and processes for producing hydrogen using bacteria are described. One detailed process for producing hydrogen uses a system for producing hydrogen as described herein, the system including a reactor. Anodophilic bacteria are disposed within the interior of the reactor and an organic material oxidizable by an oxidizing activity of the anodophilic bacteria is introduced and incubated under oxidizing reactions conditions such that electrons are produced and transferred to the anode. A power source is activated to increase a potential between the anode and the cathode, such that electrons and protons combine to produce hydrogen gas. One system for producing hydrogen includes a reaction chamber having a wall defining an interior of the reactor and an exterior of the reaction chamber. An anode is provided which is at least partially contained within the interior of the reaction chamber and a cathode is also provided which is at least partially contained within the interior of the reaction chamber.

  • Patent number: 7482154
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus comprising a magnet adapted to create a diamagnetic force field at all points in space at which a magnetic field-field gradient product of the magnet has a value greater than or equal to a threshold value. At or above the threshold value, the diamagnetic force field induces a diamagnetic body force within a biological specimen supported within a bioreactor chamber that is disposed within the diamagnetic force field. The apparatus may alter the magnitude of the induced diamagnetic body force and may alter the direction of the induced diamagnetic body with respect to a spatial coordinate system or with respect to the direction of a secondary body force acting upon or within the biological specimen, thereby altering the vector sum of the induced diamagnetic body force and the secondary body force acting on the biological specimen.
