Abstract: The present invention is directed to a improved gas discharge lamp particularly for use as flash bulbs or lamps, wherein two tungsten electrodes are fused into a glass tube. In order for the lead to be soldered to an outer end of each of the tungsten electrodes with a soft solder, the outer ends of the electrodes are provided with a coating of a refractory solder, such as a hard solder or brazing compound. The coating, which has a melting point approximately at the point of fusion for the glass tube, can be applied during the step of fusing the electrodes into the glass tube.
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a photomultiplier tube (10) comprising a tube body (20), a photocathode (30) and an electron multiplier element (40) destined to be placed at a small distance from the photocathode (30). According to the invention the tube (10) is provided with sliding means (50) of the electron multiplier (40) parallel to the axis (22) of the tube body (20), means (50) provided with abutments (53) situated in the proximity of the said window (31).
Abstract: The invention relates to a high-pressure discharge lamp comprising a discharge vessel (3) enclosing a discharge space (3b) and provided with two main electrodes (4,5). Each of the main electrodes is connected to a lead-through member (40,50), which is enclosed with a clearance space (10) by a closing part (30) and is connected thereto by means of a melting glass connection (9) in a gas-tight manner. According to the invention, the lead-through member is provided with a proturberance (51) reaching as far as the closing part in such a manner that the lead-through member (50) is passed with a clamping fit through the ceramic closure member. Thus, the lead-through member is fixed, as a result of which the manufacture of the lamp is considerably simplified.
Abstract: A wall-stabilized infared flash tube has a glass bulb with a flash chamber therein with a cathode lead having an electrode member welded thereto inserted in the flash chamber, the flash chamber, the lead, and the electrode member having dimensions selected for minimizing the influences of white light on the output of the flash tube, so as to enhance the spectrum of the infared output. The flash chamber preferably has a length no longer than 20 mm, and an interior diameter in the range of approximately 0.6 mm to approximately 1.3 mm. A method for manufacturing such a flash tube includes the steps of welding the electrode member to the lead at one location, inserting the lead and electrode combination into a flash chamber of a glass bulb having suitable dimensions, and fusing the lead vacuum-tight to the glass bulb.
Abstract: A filament assembly which includes spaced posts with slotted ends for positioning a filament. The ends of the filament are secured to the posts in tapered holes which receive a pin or screw to provide electrical contact and tension the filament.
Abstract: A cathode cup structure for a high voltage x-ray tube having a base formed of a weldable material and an exposed upper surface of a non-weldable material bonded to the base. The upper surface may be machined from a block of graphite to form an appropriate cathode cup structure configuration and then bonded to a base formed of TZM using a platinum brazing compound. The graphite upper surface may be coated with pyroltic carbon to reduce dust or alternatively, may be formed of a composition of silicon carbide graphite to minimize dusting problems. The graphite composition of the upper section of the cathode cup minimizes the risk of welding of an electron emissive filament passing through the cup structure.

Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for retaining an electrically fired getter inside a ring laser gyroscope. A groove is formed in a plate, which is hermetically sealed to a hole in the ring laser gyroscope block. The cylindrically shaped getter is placed longitudinally in the groove such that the getter contacts the groove along only two lines. A mousetrap shaped spring preloads the getter against the groove so as to prevent acceleration forces and vibrations from causing pieces of the getter, heater coil or wire to break loose.
Abstract: This invention provides a method of electric current welding in a flowing inert gas atmosphere of an electric feedthrough assembly for an electric lamp, and an apparatus for performing such welds. The method and apparatus are well suited to welding refractory metals, e.g., a molybdenum-titanium-nickel alloy feedthrough body a tungsten electrode for use in an alumina arc tube of a high-pressure sodium lamp, and a molybdenum lead-in wire pin. When the tungsten electrode is inserted into a receiving cavity in the feedthrough body and appropriate pressure applied, the electrical resistance of the solid-to-solid rough interface is greater than that of either the electrode pin or feedthrough so that application of an appropriate electrical pulse causes melting to occur only in the immediate vicinity of the interface whereby extensive recrystallization of the feedthrough body does not occur.

Abstract: A flat panel display of the type in which an electrode structure is disposed in a vacuum chamber between a front glass panel and a foil backing sheet is provided with a gas-impervious electrical connector sealably mounted over an opening in the foil sheet so as to be physically held in place within the panel by the ambient pressure on the exterior side of the connector.
Abstract: A method of assembling the arc tube of a high-pressure sodium lamp is disclosed that comprises using a spring clip to engage the lead wire proximate the end plug on the side opposite the electrode coil assembly. The electrode coil assembly is thereby centered relative to the end plug and the three ends of the clip provide planar support of the end plug/electrode on the end of the arc tube. The clip is formed by bending a refractory metal wire 180.degree. about the midpoint, bending the ends of the legs away from each other while maintaining co-planar geometry, and providing an indentation for engaging the lead wire.

Abstract: A high-pressure electric discharge lamp comprises a support part surround each electrode rod, each electrode rod having a spring wound therearound and pressing the respective support part toward an electrode mounted at the end of the respective electrode rods. This arrangement comprises a part of an assembly which is then mounted into envelope necks which extend from respective opposite ends of a quartz glass envelope which defines the discharge space of the lamp. A narrowing area is defined at the transition of the envelope necks to the envelope, the supporting parts each having a rounded end resting against a respective inclined surface defined by the narrowings at the transitions between the envelope necks and the envelope. The springs resiliently bias the supporting parts against the inclined inner surfaces of the narrowings. Also disclosed is a method of manufacture of the above described high-pressure electric discharge lamp.
Abstract: A flat-panel display is constructed by sealing a metal flange to a frame on a glass pane, then mounting an electrode structure against the pane within the frame, then placing an impervious malleable sheet over the electrode structure, then sealing the sheet to the flange, and then pumping air from the space between the sheet and the glass pane, and backfilling as required.
