Abstract: An approach to activating a getter within a sealed vacuum cavity is disclosed. The approach uses inductive coupling from an external coil to a magnetically permeable material deposited in the vacuum cavity. The getter material is formed over this magnetically permeable material, and heated specifically thereby, leaving the rest of the device cavity and microdevice relatively cool. Using this inductive coupling technique, the getter material can be activated after encapsulation, and delicate structures and low temperature wafer bonding mechanisms may be used.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a color cathode ray tube capable of surely applying a predetermined tension force to a shadow mask and preventing the generation of wrinkles and a manufacturing apparatus of the color cathode ray tube. The method includes applying a compression force to a mask frame formed in a frame shape in the direction in which a gap between at least a pair of facing sides is reduced; and welding and fixing a shadow mask to the upper surface of the mask frame with a tension force applied in the direction opposite to the compression force. In this method, a place to which the compression force is applied is the upper end of the external surface of the mask frame. Thus, a repulsion force in the direction in which a shadow mask is stretched can surely be obtained after the compression force is released, as compared with the case where the same level of compression force is applied to the lower end. Consequently, it is possible to prevent the deterioration of the tension force of the shadow mask.

Abstract: A method and device for manufacturing a CRT enables four springs to be accurately welded to the apertured grill without disordering the relative position of the pin holes in each of the springs even if simultaneous welding is not carried out. The location of the pin hole is indexed in such a way that a space between the surface of the grill and the inner surface of the panel may always be kept constant at any location under a state in which the apertured grill is fixed to the panel. The spring is welded in advance to the spring holders of the lower lateral member and the right and left vertical members in such a way that the pin hole is positioned at the indexed location. The remaining one spring is positioned in such a way that the pin hole is positioned at the indexed location when the apertured grill is positioned to cause the relative positions of the pin holes of the welded three springs to coincide with the relative arrangement of the pins of the lower, right and left skirts of the panel.

Abstract: A shadow mask, or color selection electrode, in a color cathode ray tube (CRT) is in the form of a thin metal foil and includes a large number of apertures through which electron beams are directed onto the phosphorescent coating on the CRT's display screen for forming a video image. The apertured shadow mask is also used with a light source during CRT manufacture to form a large number of spaced phosphor elements in the phosphorescent coating. Ideally, all of the beam passing apertures and phosphor elements are circular in cross-section, but the shadow mask is stretched and maintained under high tension when mounted in the CRT causing some of the apertures, particularly those adjacent its four corners, to also become stretched and assume an oval shape.

Three or four support pads are utilized to support the bottom edge of the skirt portion of the panel. Each of the support pads may be elevationally moved by a drive unit. First through fourth distance sensors serve to detect the height of corner points on the interior surface of the panel face portion. A control device is adapted to control the operation of the drive unit in a manner that the corner points are brought into a predetermined reference plane before the support pin insertion proceeds. A fifth distance sensor may be further employed to detect the height of a center point.
