Patent number: 6007413Abstract: Midspan access to selected optical fibers which are encapsulated in an optical ribbon or tube is achieved by placing the desired span of the encapsulated fibers to be accessed between opposing abrasive layers and controllably urging at least one of the abrasive layers in the direction of the opposing abrasive layer to cause both abrasive layers to contact the encapsulant which covers the fibers. The amount of force applied to the at least one abrasive layer is limited by the structure of a resilient element which is coupled to the abrasive surface. Stress concentrators are created in the encapsulant and the encapsulant is removed from the span portion by relative movement of the encapsulated fibers and the abrasive layers. Patent number: 5947804Abstract: An orbital sander includes a motor, a housing, and a drive shaft rotatably driven by the motor about a drive axis. A bearing freely rotatable about a bearing axis is disposed eccentrically with respect to the drive axis to define an eccentric offset. A sanding platen is supported by the bearing. An input sleeve is interposed between the bearing and the drive shaft, and has an input axis spaced from the drive axis. An output sleeve, positioned within and engaging the bearing, encircles the input sleeve and is rotatable about the input axis. The sleeves are circumferentially aligned, thereby minimizing the height of the sander. A stop member cooperates with the sleeves to allow for rotation of the sanding platen while preventing axial movement of the sleeves. The sleeves have cooperating surfaces which limit their relative movement, defining maximum and minimum eccentric offsets based on the direction of motor rotation.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1998Date of Patent: September 7, 1999Assignee: Ryobi North America, Inc.Inventors: Masatoshi Fukinuki, John E. Patent number: 5851141Abstract: This invention pertains to a power sander particularly useful in the trade of painting, specifically designed when painting louvered doors having parallel slats at an angle therein. When painting unpainted louvered doors, a primer must first be applied. To enhance the smoothness and attractiveness of the same, the primer must be sanded and up to this date it could only be done by hand because no appropriate tools where available. The tool of this invention solves the above noted problem. It is a hand held and light weight tool having an elongated blade extending from its forward end. The blade in its lateral extent is somewhat tapered but the thickness remains the same and it conforms to the space between adjacent slats. The mechanism inside the housing of the tool drives the blade in an orbital manner to simulate hand sanding. The blade has abrasive grit thereon and will sand the surfaces of two confronting slats at the same time.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1996Date of Patent: December 22, 1998Inventor: Ronald W. Elmore

Patent number: 5674119Abstract: A miniature motorized hand held dental saw wherein the axis of rotation of the handle of the dental saw is tangent to the cutting edge of the blade. This important characteristic, combined with the use of a flexible blade, enables the operator to change, as needed, the direction of the cut without any snagging or binding effects. The dental saw preferably includes a main steel body on which are attached three flanged Teflon.TM. coated bearings that support and guide a thin, annular blade. The rotation of the blade, on these flanged bearings, is created by a drive assembly including two opposite wheels, a drive wheel and a follower wheel, each wheel including a hub on which is fitted an o-ring. The opposite o-rings create an equal pressure on both faces of the blade and cause the blade to rotate.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1996Date of Patent: October 7, 1997Inventor: Marc DesRosiers

Patent number: 5658193Abstract: A hand tool for performing an axially reciprocating operation on a workpiece includes a rigid drive member having a longitudinal axis and a coupling formation for releasably securing one of a plurality of task-specific attachments, the coupling formation configured for engaging the attachments along the axis, and a handle portion operatively connected to said the member for grasping by a user to apply force to a workpiece through the drive member to perform an operation thereon. The drive member may be reciprocated manually or by a motorized mechanism. The coupling portion of the drive member secures the attachment against unwanted axial movement. The attachment exerts a clamping force on the drive member.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1994Date of Patent: August 19, 1997Assignee: Wahl Clipper CorporationInventor: James E. McCambridge

Patent number: 5651727Abstract: There is disclosed herein an adapter system for use with a hand-held electrically-driven grinding tool, which rotatably drives a grinding wheel for removing grout or mortar from a work site. The adapter system is constructed to controllably deliver a liquid, usually water to the grinding wheel. The adapter system includes a valve assembly mounted to the tool body, which assembly includes: (1) a housing which defines an inlet and an outlet and (2) a shut off valve member positioned within the housing and between the inlet and outlet and operable from external of the housing to selectively provide and interrupt communication between the inlet and the outlet. There is also provided a supply conduit leading from a source and connected to the inlet for delivering liquid from the source to the valve housing inlet. A flexible delivery conduit is provided and connected to the valve housing and positionable adjacent to periphery of the grinding element.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 1995Date of Patent: July 29, 1997Assignee: Hoffman & KlempererInventors: Peter L. Patent number: 5637034Abstract: An oscillating tool for sanding a surface has a body (12) defining an internal cavity (14) and a motor (20) located therein The motor has a motor shaft (22) oriented in parallel with the body. A crank (24) is affixed to the motor which has a crank pin (26) projecting therefrom. A lever arm (34) is pivotably affixed to the body for rotation about a pivot axis generally perpendicular to the motor shaft. The lever arm cooperates with the crank pin to cause the lever arm to cyclically pivot back and forth. A pad support (18) is adapted to receive a work member (19). The planar pad support is affixed to the lever arm at a location spaced apart from the pivot axis and oscillated therewith. The pad support has a substantially 90 degree forward corner (110) formed by a pair or facet edges and a pair of outwardly inclined straight side edges (116, 118).Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1995Date of Patent: June 10, 1997Assignee: Ryobi North America, Inc.Inventors: Robert G. Patent number: 5634843Abstract: A multi-functional grinding wiper including a stand of wiper, an aluminum plate, and an emery. The upper part of the grinding wiper is a wavelike shape designed according to physical maneuverability. There is a connector at an end of the wiper connecting a hose or dust cleaning tube. Each orifice at the bottom of the wiper has it's own channel pointing directly to the connector, thus water from the connector can be sprinkled or dust powder can be cleaned up through the tube evenly. The bottom of the wiper is caulked by an aluminum plate stuck with a self-adhesive tape which snaps the fluffy part of the emery sheet so that it may adhere tightly to the grinding wiper stand.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1995Date of Patent: June 3, 1997Inventor: Te-Hsi Liu

Patent number: 5624305Abstract: Current pole mounted vacuum sanders have universal connections between the pole and sander which permit the sanding pad to lift off the sanding surface when pressure is applied. The present invention provides a universal connection between the pole and base of the vacuum hand sanding device which allows the head to be semi-locked into position when the pole is angled to the working surface to prevent the pad lifting from the surface.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1996Date of Patent: April 29, 1997Inventor: Geoffrey P.
