Wireless Distribution System Patents (Class 455/3.01)
  • Patent number: 8811889
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing broadband signals to a portable user device is disclosed. Broadband signals, such as satellite radio signals, are received at a base station having a plurality of antennas. The content of the broadband signals are then encoded using space time coding (STC), and the STC encoded broadband content is transmitted from the plurality of antennas via a first wireless network protocol. The STC encoded broadband content can be received at a portable user device having a plurality of antennas or at a wireless access point having a plurality of antennas, which then transmit the broadband signals via a second wireless network protocol.

  • Patent number: 8811885
Abstract: A user (102) hears an audio program being broadcast and can record a sample of the audio. The sample is then conveyed to an analyzing means (106) to determine to which broadcast station the user is listening. The analyzing means monitors many broadcast channels. Thus, characteristics of the audio sample and samples taken from the broadcast channels can be compared to find a match. Broadcast information pertaining to the broadcast channel from which the match was found may then be reported back to the user, combined with an advertisement of a promotion, prize notification, discount offers, and other information specific for a certain radio station for example.

  • Patent number: 8787882
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for adjusting resource profiles which are used by user equipment (UE) to pre-fetch assets from content providers. In one embodiment, a recommender system receives a resource profile from a UE. The resource profile indicates content providers that have assets for the UE to download in advance during a pre-fetch operation. The resource profile also defines a percentage of UE resources allocated to each of the content providers for downloading the assets during the pre-fetch operation. The recommender system then adjusts the percentages of the UE resources in the resource profile for the end user to generate an updated resource profile for the end user, and transmits the updated resource profile to the UE for use in one or more subsequent pre-fetch operations.

Abstract: A fixed or Mode II device enables a Mode I device for license exempt operation by providing to it a list of available license exempt radio channels and a parameter indicating an interval at which contact verification signals CVSs are to be sent. The CVSs verify whether the list remains valid. The fixed/Mode II device then repeatedly sends contact verification signals spaced in time from one another according to the interval. Abstract: A mechanism for distributing data between mobile devices. A method includes creating, by a processing device, a group comprising of mobile devices in an ad-hoc mode that share data. The mobile devices are located within a pre-defined range. The method also includes identifying, by the processing device, at least a portion of the data available for sharing in at least one of the mobile devices. The method also includes replicating, by the processing device, the identified data for distribution to the mobile devices. The method further includes distributing, by the processing device, the replicated data to the at least one of the mobile devices in the immediate mode when the at least one of the mobile devices is within the pre-defined range.

Abstract: Various embodiments implement a set of low overhead mechanisms to enable on-demand routing protocols. The on-demand protocols use route accumulation during discovery floods to discover when better paths have become available even if the paths that the protocols are currently using are not broken. In other words, the mechanisms (or “Route Optimizations”) enable improvements to routes even while functioning routes are available. The Route Optimization mechanisms enable nodes in the network that passively learn routing information to notify nodes that need to know of changes in the routing information when the changes are important. Learning routing information on up-to-date paths and determining nodes that would benefit from the information is performed, in some embodiments, without any explicit control packet exchange. One of the Route Optimization mechanisms includes communicating information describing an improved route from a node where the improved route diverges from a less nearly optimal route.

Abstract: An updated group alias, based on one or more of a location, function, and purpose of a group, is transmitted to a subscriber unit (SU) and displayed at the SU, in place of a previously provisioned group ID or group alias associated with the group, during communications with, or when the SU is tuned to, the group. An incident ID, associated with one or more groups and identifying an incident, is received and stored at a SU. The SU embeds the stored incident ID in all future communications with the one or more groups and, upon request, scans a set of groups and/or channels for communications having the incident ID embedded therein. An incident ID alias described one or more of a name, location, function, or purpose of the incident, may also be received and associated with the incident ID.

Abstract: A radio receiver may comprise a receiver adaptable for receiving a plurality of broadcast streams over a plurality of broadcast channels, wherein the receiver will attempt to receive a selected broadcast stream on a selected broadcast channel, and if the selected broadcast stream is not receivable on the selected broadcast channel, the receiver will attempt to receive the selected broadcast stream on an alternative broadcast channel. A computer readable medium may allow a user of a receiver to create a composite stream comprising at least one portion selected from each of at least two of a plurality of broadcast streams. A method of open interface merge replication may involve comparing data between first and second databases, and if a conflict exists, updating one of the first and second databases with at least a portion of data from the other of the first and second databases to resolve the conflict.

Abstract: Order requests for playing audio contents and/or video contents are transmitted by way of communication transmission apparatus (3) via a telecommunication network (2) to a computer-based central unit (1). The central unit (1) determines one of several geographically distributed play units (5, 6, 7) which are remote from the central unit (1) and are separate from the communication transmission apparatus (3), on account of details which are transmitted with the order requests, e.g. an identification or a location detail of a play unit (5, 6, 7), or a location detail of a mobile communication transmission unit (3), for playing the audio contents and/or video contents. The audio contents and/or video contents are transmitted from the central unit (1) as a continuous data flow to the selected play unit (5, 6, 7), and are played there via loudspeakers (51, 61, 71) or displays (52, 72).

Abstract: Embodiments provide power-efficient mechanisms for communicating small amounts of information to receiver devices within a mobile broadcast system. A generic transport mechanism enables transmitting data relevant to upper layer protocols in a lower layer sub-channel so multiple information summary flows can share the same physical layer sub-channel. Data fields are added to the Overhead Information Service (OIS) channel to provide power-efficient logical channels for carrying the summary information. Data from the power-efficient logical channels are provided to an upper protocol layer that receives the information summary flows. Information summary flow may carry a version number of an information flow in the broadcast signal, codes or other information. Receiver devices periodically monitoring the OIS receive the information summary flows.

Abstract: A multiple option loan presentation apparatus and method allows a loan agent to communicate a non-traditional loan product to a customer. Non-traditional mortgage products such as pick-a-payment loans allow a borrower to exchange lower payments during an initial period for higher payments later in an amortization period. Some borrowers do not want to accepting the risk associated with adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) for increases in interest rates, but are still desirous of options for reduced monthly payments. Combining fixed rate loans with an option for interest-only or minimum payments allows this flexibility, but places a premium on being able to graphically depict the implications of these choices. Thereby, the borrower can make an informed decision and the loan agent is able to more quickly conclude the transaction. In particular, the minimum payments constraints and changes in amounts can be made more intuitive.
