  • Patent number: 8565766
Abstract: A method and system for selecting a network to establish a connection to from a set of available network includes a network database providing historical information about each of the networks and sends the database information to end user terminals. The end user terminals monitor real-time performance information about each of the available networks and can send this information to the network database. The end user terminals also include network connection policy information which can be used to make the selection decision. The end user terminal determines a network quality score for each available network as a function of the historical information from the network database, the real-time performance information about each available network and the network connection policy information. The end user terminal can select the available network as a function of the network quality score, for example, selecting the available network with the highest network quality score.

  • Patent number: 8554178
Abstract: Methods and systems for efficient deployment of communication filters are presented. In an exemplary embodiment, a wireless communication device (WCD) attempts to register with a foreign agent and a home agent by using mobile IP. During this process, an authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) server receives a first message from the foreign agent, where the first message seeks to authenticate the WCD. The AAA server responds to the first message with a second message containing a filter to be applied to the WCD's communication. The AAA server than receives a third message containing the filter, and the AAA server responsively transmits a fourth message to the home agent, seeking to have the home agent apply the filter to the WCD's communication. In this way, communications between the home agent and the AAA server can be reduced because the home agent only communicates with the AAA server if the WCD is subject to a filter.

  • Publication number: 20130260749
Abstract: A location continuity service having a location continuity application server (“LCAS”) that utilizes location data generated by multiple networks to determine the location of a mobile device is disclosed. The LCAS specifies a suitable reconciliation process that identifies two or more location estimation techniques that are implemented by different access networks and indicates how to utilize the location data produced by the identified estimation techniques. The LCAS interacts with various access networks identified by the reconciliation process in order to receive location data (e.g., positioning measurements and/or estimated locations) generated by the access networks and analyzes the received data to determine the location of a mobile device and provide the determined location to a location-based service. In some examples, an LCAS also provides location continuity when a mobile device moves between a home communications system and a visited communications system.

  • Patent number: 8548462
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining user equipment cell identification examines the age of the cell identification known to the user equipment when determining whether to use that cell identification or to obtain the cell identification through alternate means. The age of the cell identification known to the user equipment is examined by the user equipment, the communication system, or both by comparing the age to a predefined value. The age indicator can be transmitted by the user equipment to a network. If the age exceeds a predefined value, then the cell identification is obtained through network procedures. If the age is less than a predefined value then the cell identification known to the user equipment is accepted as current. Position information for the user equipment can be based upon the cell identification known to the user equipment or as obtained through network procedures.

Abstract: Data related to a subscriber in a communications network is to be retrieved. A first Generic User Profile (GUP) server receives an incoming request for the subscriber related data from a data consumer in a first communication domain and determines that the data is located in a second communication domain. An outgoing request for the data is then transmitted to a second GUP server in the second communication domain via an interface. The second GUP server then retrieves the requested subscriber related data from a network repository and transmits the requested data to the first GUP server, which forwards the requested data to the data consumer. Service access to subscriber data located in other domains than the GUP Server is enabled, for example when the subscriber is roaming. The subscriber related data can also be distributed in both the first and second communication domain.

Abstract: Methods and systems for obtaining the location of a caller during an emergency or other telephone call. Before or during a call, a phone system can obtain from one or more sources a subscriber access line identity associated with a subscriber location record that includes a subscriber access line identity attribute and a subscriber location attribute. A phone system can send a query that includes the subscriber access line identity to a subscriber location query system that returns a subscriber location record or a subscriber location to the phone system. The phone system can then display the caller location information to a phone system, an agent or operator so that emergency services can be quickly and accurately dispatched. Using similar procedure and a memory, phone systems can also determine if a subscriber phone has or is changing location. Methods for testing the emergency call capabilities of a subscriber access line.

  • Patent number: 8504023
Abstract: After receiving a packet data protocol (PDP) activation request signaling from a user equipment (UE), a base station checks whether to activate a local Internet protocol access (LIPA) function for the UE. If yes, the base station informs a core network (CN) for authentication and signaling control. If the user plane data from the UE is allowed to be transmitted via the LIPA, the base station assigns a private IP address to the UE; and the UE access internet via the base station. The base station determines whether user plane data from the UE passes through the CN; and the CN measures Internet service time provided to the UE. If all user plane data transmitted from the UE are allowed to be transmitted via the LIPA, the base station periodically transmits a data packet to the CN to maintain signaling link.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and corresponding system to help a wireless communication device (WCD) stay within a home system's network coverage after an access attempt failure. According to one embodiment of the method, a WCD receives a channel list message (CLM) in a given coverage area and transmits an access attempt on a carrier listed in the received CLM. Upon the failure of such an access attempt, the WCD may transmit an additional access attempt on another carrier listed in the received CLM, rather than switching over to a roaming system. According to another embodiment, a WCD receives a channel list message (CLM) in a given coverage area and transmits an access attempt on a carrier listed in the received CLM. Upon the failure of such an access attempt, the WCD may transmit an additional access attempt on another carrier not listed in the received CLM, rather than switching over to a roaming system.

Abstract: A method, an apparatus, and a system for processing registration backup data are disclosed. A Serving Call Session Control Function (S-CSCF) receives a request from a User Equipment (UE) and judges whether the request carries multi-registration information so as to decide whether to add multi-registration indication information into a Server Assignment Request (SAR) message sent to a Home Subscriber Server (HSS). The HSS performs operations according to whether the SAR message carries the multi-registration indication information, therefore avoiding unnecessary signaling interactions, reducing the signaling load, avoiding unnecessary data processing between the HSS and the S-CSCF, and saving system resources.

  • Patent number: RE44435
Abstract: Packet communication method and system in which a packet destined for a terminal is provided service according to a service table indexed by packet classification and the terminal's power mode. The service table may specify for a connection a predetermined quality of service or discarding the packet. For a power mode having an alerting (i.e., paging) mechanism, the service may include alerting the terminal. The service table may also include a network edge point's own service requests and service requests from terminals, provisioning servers, and handoff sources. For a multicast or broadcast packet, as each terminal may be in a different power mode, the associated service in the service table may therefore be different for each terminal. In that case, the packet is provided with service so that any given terminal is provided with at least the quality of service specified in the service table. Thus, a multicast or broadcast packet is discarded when the service specified for all terminals is “discard.
