System Selection Patents (Class 455/435.2)
  • Patent number: 9706538
Abstract: A Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless access system transfers wireless data to User Equipment (UE) over a first frequency band based on an initial frequency band selection priority. The LTE wireless access system processes a user Identifier (ID) associated with the UE to select a new frequency band selection priority for the UE. The LTE wireless access system transfers a connection release message to the UE indicating the new frequency band selection priority for the UE. The LTE wireless access system receives a data message for the UE and identifies a second frequency band for the UE based on the new frequency band selection priority. The LTE wireless access system transfers the data message to the UE over the second frequency band.

Abstract: An authentication process receives information identifying a user, a device used by the user and a location in which the device is being used. That authentication process determines whether the location is among a set of familiar locations stored about the user for a service being accessed. If the location is not among the set of familiar locations, then the user is not authenticated. A desirable user experience can be obtained by using information about any existing relationship, such as a synchronization relationship, between the device and the service established at a prior familiar location. Instead of challenging a user whose device is in an unfamiliar location, the authentication process determines whether the device has a relationship established with the service. If the device has a relationship established with the service, then the set of familiar locations is updated to include the location in which the device is being used.

Abstract: A telecommunications system comprises a core network, an access control function and a plurality of radio access networks. Each radio access network communicates data to and from the mobile device in accordance with one of a plurality of radio access technologies. When a mobile device requests connection with the core network via a chosen radio access technology, the core network establishes a connection with the mobile device via at least one of the plurality of radio access interfaces. An access control function identifies the mobile device and in accordance with access control criteria generates an attach response indicating with which if any of the plurality of radio access technologies the mobile device may establish the connection and communicates the attach response to the radio access network via which the mobile device has requested the connection.

Abstract: A system, a method and an apparatus are described. The apparatus comprise a modem that determines frequencies at which a transceiver of a wireless device is susceptible to interference generated by a different transceiver of the wireless device, and that modifies a search for a radio access network based on the one or more frequencies. The first transceiver may be susceptible to the interference by means of transmission of the interference through one or more circuits within the wireless device. A threshold power level may be modified based on an estimate of the power of the interference. The threshold power level may be used to determine presence of a pilot signal. The interference may be modeled based on a list of frequencies associated with one or more subscriptions of the wireless device. An order of searching for pilot signals may be modified.

Abstract: Single radio handovers (SRHOs) between heterogonous networks can be facilitated using several techniques. One such technique includes activating a receiver of a target radio interface in a mobile node without activating a transmitter of the target radio interface, thereby allowing the mobile node to perform target network discovery while the transmitter of the target radio interface remains deactivated. Another such technique includes encapsulating link-layer discovery frames into media independent handover frames (MIH), and then tunneling the MIH frames over a tunnel extending through the source network. This may allow the MN to achieve various handover related tasks without activating the target radio link. Another technique includes establishing a schedule (or delay period) for synchronizing deactivation of the source radio interface with activation of the transmitter in the target radio interface.

  • Patent number: 9307467
Abstract: A network reselection procedure, of a wireless communication device, that occurs following a network detachment event, such as a device sleep event or a device power savings mode event. The wireless communication device attempts to acquire a first wireless network to which the wireless communication device was most recently attached, immediately preceding the network detachment event. Then, in response to an unsuccessful acquisition of the first wireless network, the wireless communication device attempts an alternate network acquisition utilizing a Most Recently Used List (MRUL) that is stored at the wireless communication device and includes information about one or more frequency bands allocated to a primary service provider with which the wireless communication device is affiliated. After determining whether the alternate network acquisition attempt was successful, the wireless communication device attaches to a second network and stores information associated with the second network.

  • Patent number: 9231748
Abstract: A method and corresponding system is provided to help mitigate the potential quality-of-service degradation associated with fast-moving UEs operating in a network that provides higher-bandwidth frequency channels in some but not all wireless coverage sectors. In accordance with the method, a base station may evaluate a UE's current speed and, when that speed exceeds a threshold speed, the base station may instruct the UE to register on a low-bandwidth channel rather than a higher-bandwidth channel. Registering for service on a low-bandwidth channel instead of a higher-bandwidth channel may help ensure that the UE maintains a consistent quality of service as the UE moves from coverage area to coverage area. Further, the base station may also query nearby base stations to determine whether there exists a sufficient number of base stations that operate on higher-bandwidth channels. If so, the base station may instruct the UE to use a higher-bandwidth channel.
