Patent number: 9002355Abstract: A communication device locates a preferable wireless service provider in a multi-service provider environment using a frequency band search schedule. Initially, the communications device registers with a less preferred service provider in a first frequency band. While remaining registered with the less preferred service provider, the device examines several frequency bands in the order specified by the frequency band search schedule. A frequency band is examined by dividing the frequency band into many sub-bands, and by locating the strongest signal above a threshold within the sub-band being examined. The examination continues until a second frequency band having a more preferred service provider is located. The communication device then registers with the more preferred service provider. The category of service provider may be identified and displayed on the communication device.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2011Date of Patent: April 7, 2015Assignee: AT&T Mobility LLCInventors: Michael D. Patent number: 8995994Abstract: A telecommunications system includes a first (home) mobile telecommunications network A5 second (roamed) mobile telecommunications network B and a third (virtual) mobile telecommunications network C. The virtual network C does not have its own radio access network but uses the radio access network of network B in accordance with a commercial contract between networks B and C. Network C is a MVNO. When a mobile telecommunications device that has network A as its home network roams to network B, the mobile telecommunications device initially registers with network B as the roamed network. Conventionally, communications between network A and network B would be transmitted via a fixed communication link (25) (such as a leased line). However, in the embodiment described, the network A transmits a command to the mobile telecommunications device, instructing that device to de-register from network B and to re-register with virtual network C.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2006Date of Patent: March 31, 2015Assignee: Vodafone IP Licensing LimitedInventors: Mark Dowds, Paul Davey, Ian Maxwell

Patent number: 8995998Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate communicating PSC split information regarding neighboring cells. The PSC split information can be transmitted in one or more overhead messages selected based on network deployment. Where macro cells and femto cells provide PSC split information, which can be a PSC range for related cells, PSC list, etc., the information can be transmitted in a low priority overhead message since it can be obtained at a source cell. Where only femto cells or closed subscriber group (CSG) cells provide PSC split information, the information can be transmitted in a higher priority more frequently transmitted message. In this regard, the information is available at target cells since not all devices can access CSG cells. Thus, by providing the PSC split information in a more frequently transmitted message, devices can retrieve the PSC split information early on in communications to lower power consumption.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2009Date of Patent: March 31, 2015Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Damanjit Singh, Jen Mei Chen, Manoj M. Patent number: 8965363Abstract: A computer-implemented method, system, and computer-readable storage media for controlling channel access to a mobile device are described. Based upon a configuration being initiated for the mobile device, a preferred roaming list (PRL) on the mobile device is compared to a stored PRL for the mobile device. A channel access to the mobile device is denied when the PRL on the mobile device does not match the stored PRL. A channel is assigned to the mobile device when the PRL on the mobile device matches the stored PRL.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2012Date of Patent: February 24, 2015Assignee: Sprint Communications Company L.P.Inventors: Shoba Umamaheswaran, Kyle Trent Ulrey, Kenneth Michael Kieffer, Jr.

Patent number: 8958338Abstract: A cell, preferably a stand-alone device, arranged for wireless communication with a plurality of other cells in a communication network, e.g. a TDMA network such as a DECT based network. The cell includes a processor performing a selection algorithm which selects a reference cell among other cells. The selection algorithm bases the selection on a wireless signal, e.g. an RF signal, received from at least two other cells. Further, the cell includes a wireless receiver for receiving a first wireless signal, e.g. an RF signal, from the reference cell with time synchronization information for the reference cell. The cell includes a wireless transmitter which transmits time synchronization information for the cell itself represented in a second wireless signal, e.g. and RF signal. The selection algorithm selects the reference cell based on transmission link quality measurements and cell path information received from a number of cell candidates. The cell preferably also itself transmits cell path information, e.g.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2009Date of Patent: February 17, 2015Assignee: RTX A/SInventors: Morten Laursen, Jens Toftgaard Petersen

Method for loading a list of preferred networks into a secure element contained in a mobile terminal
Patent number: 8954062Abstract: The invention relates to a method for loading a list of preferred networks into a secure element contained in a mobile terminal. The loading is accomplished when the secure element detects that it is in a roaming condition within a telecommunication network. The method consists of: i) asking (12) for an IP channel to be opened between the telecommunication network and the secure element, the request for opening originating with the secure element; ii) requesting (13) the loading of the list of preferred networks; iii) uploading (14) via the IP channel the list of preferred networks into the secure element; and iv) transmitting (16) a request by the secure element to the mobile terminal to use one of said preferred networks in said list.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2011Date of Patent: February 10, 2015Assignee: Gemalto SAInventors: Jean-François Kuc, Lionel Merrien -
Patent number: 8954072Abstract: A method and apparatus for cell update while in a Cell_FACH state are disclosed. After selecting a target cell, system information is read from the target cell including high speed downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH) common system information. A radio network temporary identity (RNTI) received in a source cell is cleared and a variable HS_DSCH_RECEPTION is set to TRUE. An HS-DSCH medium access control (MAC-hs) entity is configured based on the HS-DSCH common system information. High speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) transmission is then received in the target cell. A CELL UPDATE message is sent to notify of a cell change. The HSDPA transmission may be received using a common H-RNTI broadcast in the system information, a reserved H-RNTI as requested in a CELL UPDATE message, or a temporary identity which is a subset of a U-RNTI. The MAC-hs entity may be reset.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2012Date of Patent: February 10, 2015Assignee: Interdigital Technology CorporationInventors: Rocco DiGirolamo, Diana Pani, Christopher R. Patent number: 8954070Abstract: A method and system for selecting a communication network by a wireless communication device (106) includes receiving (310) an identification parameter at the wireless communication device from a communication network which identifies the communication network. Next, the method compares (312) the identification parameter with a list at the wireless communication device to determine (314) service information. The service information identifies the services supported by the communication network. The method further includes comparing (316) the service information with a service-related datum at the wireless communication device that indicates the services desired by the wireless communication device. Lastly, the method includes selecting (318) the communication network for accessing a requested service if the service information matches the service-related datum.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2006Date of Patent: February 10, 2015Assignee: Google Technology Holdings LLCInventors: William E. Patent number: 8954071Abstract: A mobile system where generic information is defined which is applicable per the UE in order to convey subscription related information from the core network to the radio access network which can be used to steer the user to an appropriate cell or for any other Radio Resource Management (RRM) related procedure/decision. It is proposed to define an information element (herein referred as “subscriber type”) which allows an indication or pointer to a set of rules which are locally defined in involved nodes (e.g. CN SGSN, MSC, routers etc) and describe the “handling rules” to be applied in the RAN for each user of the mobile system independently.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2008Date of Patent: February 10, 2015Assignee: Deutsche Telekom (UK) LimitedInventors: Axel Klatt, Peter Stevens
