Abstract: A parameter for transmission by an access point is determined in a manner that facilitates access terminal mobility. For example, a cell reselection parameter and/or a handover parameter may be determined based on the quality of a signal from one access point (e.g., a macro cell) at another access point (e.g., a femto cell). In addition, a cell reselection parameter and/or a handover parameter may be determined based on the proximity of one access point (e.g., a femto cell) to another access point (e.g., a macro cell). Through the use of these techniques, a parameter may be determined in a manner that mitigates access terminal ping-ponging between access points and that mitigates outages that may otherwise occur as a result of an access terminal remaining on an access point too long.

The method includes detecting that, during past CSFB call setup for UEs served by the eNodeB, UEs reported as a strongest fallback coverage area a fallback coverage area that is not included in the eNodeB's CSFB-candidate data. And the method includes responsively (i) determining, based on location information and based on an identifier of the reported fallback coverage area, a node of the fallback network that the eNodeB's network can contact to facilitate CSFB call setup in the reported fallback coverage area, and (ii) adding to the CSFB-candidate data a record of the reported coverage area in association with a node identifier of the determined node, the added record being thereafter useable by the eNodeB to facilitate CSFB call setup in the reported fallback coverage area for a UE served by the eNodeB.

Abstract: Described herein are devices, components, and techniques for performing cell discovery by a cellular communication device. Prioritization data is stored by the communication device indicating, for each of multiple geographic regions, the bandwidths of frequency bands that are potentially available to the communication device. The communication device determines an order in which to search the frequency bands based on this prioritization data. For example, frequency bands having relatively high aggregate bandwidths may be prioritized over frequency bands having relatively lower aggregate bandwidths. In some cases, the priority of the frequency bands may be determine algorithmically based on the bandwidths of the frequency bands, and in some situations a lower bandwidth band may be prioritized over a higher bandwidth band.

  • Patent number: 10412651
Abstract: While operating in connected discontinuous reception (C-DRX) mode, a wireless communication device may initiate handover operations when a neighboring base station is determined by the wireless communication device to be a better serving cell than a base station operating as the current serving cell for the wireless communication device. Instead of transmitting a measurement report to the current serving cell, the wireless communication device may select one of the neighboring base stations as the new serving cell, responsive to measurements of the current serving cell and the neighboring cells performed by the wireless communication device during the on-duration of the C-DRX cycle. This enables a longer C-DRX cycle, which leads to the wireless communication device saving more power during non-real-time sensitive background data transmissions, while also avoiding higher handover failure rates and extra Radio Resource Control signaling that may need to be performed as a result of radio link failure.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for antenna optimization in an information handling system. A portable information handling system includes a chassis and a plurality of antennas coupled to the chassis. The plurality of antennas is capable of communicating in a multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna configuration with a wireless-enabled device. The system includes an antenna control module communicatively coupled to the plurality of antennas. The antenna control module is configured to detect a change in at least one of a physical configuration of the chassis and an environment surrounding the portable information handling system, the change affecting a performance one or more of the plurality of antennas. The antenna control module is also configured to, based on the change, update a MIMO antenna list from the plurality of antennas. The MIMO antenna list represents active antennas for communicating with the wireless-enabled device.

Abstract: A telecommunication carrier may use quality of experience metrics to manage user device handovers. A handover controller may receiving a quality metric value obtained by a user device for a current base station of a carrier network. The quality metric value may measure quality of experience characteristics of an application that is in communication with the current base station. The handover controller may compare the quality metric value to a corresponding quality metric value for an adjacent base station of the carrier network. The corresponding quality metric value may measure the quality of experience characteristics of an additional application that communicated with the adjacent base station. When the corresponding quality metric value is greater than the quality metric value, the handover controller may command the user device to perform a handover that switches the user device from communicating with the current base station to communicating with the adjacent base station.

  • Patent number: 10341920
Abstract: Data distribution between mobile stations and external data paths is assigned to a new set of devices, distribution points. Each distribution point is independently coupled to mobile stations, also assigned to access points. Control elements operate to control the distribution points separately from the access points. Each access point maintains a substantially stateless link with each distribution point for which the two share a mobile station. Access points might exchange data with any one or more distribution points concurrently. Access points thus obtain greater bandwidth connectivity to external data paths. Mobile stations transfer between access points and transfer between distribution points independently. This has the effect that bandwidth connectivity between distribution points and external data paths have no particular requirement for VLAN separation. Mobile stations may roam among multiple Internet protocol subnets.
