Soft Handoff Patents (Class 455/442)
  • Patent number: 9253700
Abstract: To achieve load distribution in a short period of time, a mobile communication system includes a mobile terminal (505), a radio base station (503), and a relay base station (504) that relays radio communication between the radio base station (503) and the mobile terminal (505). In the mobile communication system having such a configuration, the radio base station (503) includes control means for handing over the subordinate relay base station (504) to a neighboring radio base station (503) when a load on the radio base station is greater than a predetermined threshold. The control means is preferably configured to confirm whether the neighboring base station (503) can accept the relay base station (504) upon handover of the relay base station (504).

  • Patent number: 9253334
Abstract: A controller monitors resource usage in each of a plurality of sectors and identifies any sector with resource usage that exceeds a threshold value as a high usage sector. The controller evaluates the mobile stations in its area and identifies any mobile station that is using a high usage sector and at least two other sectors for a communication session as a candidate mobile station. The controller applies a predictive algorithm to determine whether any candidate mobile station is able to continue its respective communication session without using its respective high usage sector. In this determination, the signal levels that a mobile station reported for the sectors in its active set, other than the high usage sector, may be used to calculate a combined signal level. If the combined signal level exceeds a predefined value, the mobile station is instructed to drop the high usage sector.

  • Patent number: 9232413
Abstract: A computer-automated method is described for identifying and carrying out reconfiguration actions for a transmitter in a radio network. A computer system is configured to determine, for a first transmitter, a multitude of relative importance values for signal data points relating to the first transmitter, the signal data points being acquired by mobile wireless devices from the first transmitter. Each relative importance value is determined by: (1) calculating a relative relevance for a first signal data point for the first transmitter, acquired by a first mobile wireless device, by comparing a first value for the first signal data point to a second value for a second transmitter, (2) calculating, by a fuzzy logic engine, a quality for the first signal data point, and (3) rendering a relative importance value based upon the relative relevance and the quality for the first signal data point.

  • Patent number: 9226303
Abstract: A method and apparatus in a base station serving a first cell in a cellular network, for supporting radio resource management, RRM, in the cellular network. The base station obtains measurements (M) of signals transmitted in the first cell and of signals transmitted in at least one neighboring cell and determines a cell isolation factor of the first cell, based on the obtained measurements, the cell isolation factor indicating insusceptibility to interference from signals transmitted in the neighboring cell(s). The determined cell isolation factor is then used to support RRM for terminals in the network, e.g. as a basis for determining whether to employ an RRM scheme or not. Thereby, it is possible to decide to employ the RRM scheme for cells where it is effective and helpful and not in other cells.

Abstract: A data communication method includes: a Radio Network Controller (RNC) sends a notification message to a Node B to instruct the Node B to perform proper operations after a specific event occurs on the User Equipment (UE). A data communication system, a data sending apparatus and a data receiving apparatus are also provided in an embodiment of the present disclosure. Through the technical solution under the present disclosure, when specific events such as cell handover, disconnection and state transition occur on the UE, the RNC that obtains the event information may send a notification message to Node B to instruct the Node B to perform proper operations. Therefore, the Node B is prevented from continuing to send the buffered UE data from the source cell; and in the Cell_FACH state, the present disclosure saves the radio channel resources, shortens the transmission delay, and reduces the transmission packet loss ratio.

  • Patent number: 9197528
Abstract: Wireless networks and devices are ubiquitous today. For service providers to offer customers QoS and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) means in part providing resilient connectivity of wireless devices with good signal strength, good Signal to Noise and Interference Ratio (SNIR), and adequate useable bandwidth. Doing so requires that devices transmitting and receiving packets use over-the-air bandwidth efficiently and manage over-the-air congestion. According to embodiments of the invention QoS measurements and controls are incorporated only in the network (i.e. APs or controllers) and therefore QoS and SLAs can be achieved with all deployed client stations versus standards based approaches that require additional capabilities in network nodes, client stations and in most cases modifications to the applications.

  • Patent number: 9184882
Abstract: A method and apparatus for avoiding a collision. A collision may be avoided by allocating a first set of subframes to a backhaul link transmission, and allocating a second set of subframes to an access link transmission. In one example, the second set of subframes may be a non-overlapping set of subframes with respect to the first set of subframes. In a second embodiment, a collision may be avoided by receiving a data transmission from an evolved Node-B (eNB) and transmitting an uplink (UL) grant to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a first acknowledgement (ACK) to the eNB. The transmission may be in response to the received data transmission. The RN may avoid a collision by further transmitting an automatic ACK to the WTRU and transmitting a second UL grant to the WTRU. In a third embodiment, a collision between an access link transmission and a backhaul link transmission may be avoided by detecting a collision and determining an interface priority based on a collision occurrence type.

  • Patent number: 9031563
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for improving inter-network mobility performance in multiple network wireless communication systems by using channel avoidance information from a first network using a first radio access technology (RAT) to modify inter-RAT behavior of a second network using a second RAT. In some embodiments, the second network queries the first network for channel avoidance information and applies the channel avoidance information in suppressing inter-RAT channel measurements, avoiding inter-RAT redirection, and/or avoiding inter-RAT reselection. In embodiments, inter-RAT channel measurement suppression, inter-RAT redirection avoidance, and/or inter-RAT reselection avoidance is performed by the mobile device. In other embodiments, channel avoidance information of the first network may be communicated to other network entities of the second network and one or more of these entities may modify various inter-RAT behaviors.

Abstract: This document discusses a method and device for initiating cell measurement. An initiating condition for initiating the measurement of a Closed Subscriber Group (CSG) cell and/or a Hybrid cell is preset by the network side. The measurement of the CSG cells and/or Hybrid cells is initiated by a User Equipment (UE) when the initiating condition is satisfied. The UE automatically initiates the measurement of the CSG cell and/or Hybrid cell when the UE is close to its own footprint area or fingerprint area.

  • Patent number: 9019935
Abstract: In connection with a mobile wireless subnetwork having multiple radio network controllers and multiple radio nodes, a session established for an access terminal is associated with a serving radio network controller. The association is maintained as the access terminal moves from the coverage area of one radio node to the coverage area of another radio node within the same subnetwork. Access channel packets are routed from an access terminal having an existing session to the serving radio network controller by determining the IP address of the serving radio network controller using a session identifier.
