  • Patent number: 7957352
Abstract: Various schemes for performing inter-system handoff, e.g., from a UTRAN to a cdma2000 radio access network (RAN) are described. For a MAHHO scheme, the UTRAN uses measurements obtained by a multi-RAT device to determine suitable cdma2000 cell(s) for handover. The measurements are obtained by a candidate frequency search procedure, and the handover is accomplished by a handoff execution procedure. For a MDHHO scheme, the UTRAN relies on location information for the multi-RAT device to select suitable cdma2000 cell(s) for handover. For a CRHHO scheme, a new call is established on the cdma2000 RAN and the pending call on the UTRAN is released in a manner such that the handover appears seamless to the multi-RAT device. The multi-RAT device includes two modem processors that perform processing for the UTRAN and cdma2000 RAN and an application processor that controls the modem processors.

  • Patent number: 7953042
Abstract: A method and apparatus performs handover from an OFDM-based E-UMTS system to a CDMA-based UMTS system. A UE in communication with a PDN via the E-UMTS system, measures signal strength of the UMTS system, and sends a measurement report message indicating the measured signal strength to the E-UMTS system. A radio access network (E-RAN) of the E-UMTS system, determines whether to perform handover from the E-UMTS system to the UMTS system based on the measured signal strength. If the handover is to be performed, a core network (E-CN) of the E-UMTS system generates a PDP context and an MM context for the UE in response to a handover request from the E-RAN. The E-CN sets up a data tunnel for the UE to a GGSN of the UMTS system using the PDP/MM context. After setting up the data tunnel, the E-CN sends to the UE a handover command message including information on a radio bearer (RB) to be used by the UE to access the UMTS system. The UE accesses the UMTS system using the RB information.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a femtocell search method for a handover from a macrocell to a femtocell. The present invention relates to a method for a terminal that accesses a macrocell to search a femtocell in an environment where a plurality of femtocells are overlapped in one macrocell. The terminal searches a femtocell by using a dummy preamble in order to minimize the size of neighbor cell lists broadcasted from the macrocell to the terminal. Therefore, according to the present invention, an MAC overhead can be minimized by eliminating neighbor femtocell lists in a mobile neighbor advertisement (MOB_NBR_ADV) message broadcasted from the macrocell, and the terminal can search a femtocell with a minimum scanning load by checking only a femtocell dummy preamble in a dedicated symbol of the macrocell.

  • Patent number: 7933604
Abstract: A wireless network is used for a communication session between a mobile station and an endpoint. The wireless network receives endpoint bits representing communications from the endpoint for the mobile station and uses a first sector to transmit a forward link signal that encodes the endpoint hits. The mobile station generates mobile station hits representing communications from the mobile station for the endpoint and transmits a reverse link signal encoding the mobile station bits. A controller detects an imbalance between an error level in the forward link signal received by the mobile station and an error level in the reverse link signal received by the first sector. In response, the wireless network uses a second sector to receive the reverse link signal without using the second sector to transmit the endpoint bits. The reverse link signals received by the first and second sectors may be combined for diversity gain.

In one example embodiment, a user equipment terminal detects the collision using the additional information included in or used to generate positioning reference signals sent by two or more base stations and reports the collision to the network, and the network resolves the collision by assigning a different cell identifier to one of the colliding cells.

Abstract: A method and system for cell identification for uplink interference avoidance that includes a network device and mobile device in a communications network. Inter-frequency measurements are performed by a mobile device on a downlink carrier currently not used by the mobile device. A result of the inter-frequency measurements is compared with another value. Second measurements are initiated on the downlink carrier currently not used by the mobile device based on the comparison. A cell is identified based on the second measurements. The inter-frequency measurements may include receive signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurements, received signal code power (RSCP) measurements, or average channel power-to-total signal power ratio (Ec/Io) measurements. The second measurements may include signal quality measurements.

Abstract: In the handover method, a radio network controller periodically measures the wireless environment of a mobile communication terminal, determines whether handover is required, and informs the asynchronous mobile switching center of the asynchronous communication system that the handover is required. The asynchronous mobile switching center requests the handover and a synchronous mobile switching center assigns a forward channel to the mobile communication terminal. The mobile communication terminal prepares for communication with a synchronous mobile communication system according to the direction of the asynchronous mobile switching center, and causes a backward channel with respect to the synchronous communication system to be assigned to the mobile communication terminal.

Abstract: In a spectrum allocation method in a cellular communication system, a cell pattern is divided into clusters each containing a plurality of adjacent cells. A pool of forward and return link bearers is allocated to each cluster and may be shared among cells within the cluster. Bearers are reused between blusters having a sufficiently high mutual isolation. Preferably, the same time slot in a return link bearer is allocated to multiple users within the cluster. The receiver of the shared return link bearer uses multi-user detection techniques to separately decode the signals from each user sharing a time slot, using the spatial diversity of the individual cells.

  • Patent number: 7813735
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing a power efficient cell search in a multi-cell wireless communication system are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) having a memory that stores a cell identification list of prioritized previously top-ranked cell identities (IDs) is used to perform the cell search. A primary synchronization code (PSC) correlation peak location on a received signal is selected. A common pilot channel (CPICH) correlation value is determined by non-coherent integration of a local signal created based on a first cell ID on the cell identification list to the received signal. If the CPICH correlation value is greater than a noise threshold, thus indicating that the first cell ID is a newly found cell ID, or if a last cell ID in the cell identification list is reached, an additional determination is made as to whether there is more than one cell ID on the list having the same timing.

If a call is taking place over the 802.1x network and the strength of the 802.1x signal drops below a particular level and the strength of the cellular signal is above a certain level, the call is handed off from the 802.1x network to the cellular network. If a call is taking place over the cellular network and the cellular signal strength drops below a certain level while the 802.1x signal strength is above a certain level, the call is handed off from the cellular network to the 802.1x network. In addition, the user of the wireless device can manually initiate the handoff by actuating a handoff selector of the wireless device.
