  • Patent number: 7787519
Abstract: With the object of efficiently transmitting a variety of different information signals by utilizing the multi-carrier characteristics of Multi-carrier/DS-CDMA, the present invention is characterized in that, when, in an uplink transmission from a plurality of mobile stations to a base station, the mobile stations transmit a preamble to the base station before transmitting an information symbol sequence, the mobile stations individually select a carrier from among a plurality of carriers, and, up until receiving a preamble receipt confirmation signal from the base station with a prescribed maximum number of preamble transmissions serving as an upper limit number; the mobile stations repeatedly transmit a preamble by means of the selected carrier and vary the transmission power used for the transmissions of each carrier.

  • Patent number: 7787823
Abstract: A radio-over-fiber (RoF) optical fiber cable system with transponder diversity for a RoF wireless picocellular system that includes at least one optical fiber cable. The at least one optical fiber cable supports one or more groups of two or more transponders, wherein the transponders in a given group are arranged to form substantially co-located picocells. The transponders in each transponder group may also have one of two orthogonal antenna polarizations. A diversity combiner optically coupled to each transponder determines respective signal strengths from each transponder in each transponder group. The transponder with the greatest signal strength in a given transponder group is selected to form the picocell for the given group. This allows for the optical fiber cable system to adjust to changes in the signal strength of each picocell, such as caused by a transponder obstruction or failure.

  • Patent number: 7778643
Abstract: The use of multiple states of mobile communication device operation to allow a single base station to support a relatively large number of mobile nodes is described. The various states require different amounts of communications resources, e.g., bandwidth. Four supported states of operation are an on-state, a hold-state, a sleep-state, and an access-state. Each mobile node in the on-state is allocated communication resources to perform transmission power control signaling, transmission timing control signaling and to transmit data as part of a data uplink communications operation. Each mobile node in the hold-state is allocated communication resources to perform transmission timing control signaling and is provided a dedicated uplink for requesting a state transition and a shared resource for transmitting acknowledgements. In the sleep state a mobile node is allocated minimal resources and does not conduct power control signaling or timing control signaling. Data may be received in the on and hold states.

Abstract: A wireless, multi-modal access device and system adapted to integrate a number of communications networks operating in differing communication modes to facilitate transfer of communication links during a communication session to promote efficient use of the communication networks. The system includes a plurality of Universal Multi-Modal Access Devices UMMAD that are capable of operating at different frequencies and different protocols (TDMA, AMPS, CDMA, GSM, PCS etc) to communicate with any one of a number of Wide Bandwidth Gateways (WBG), which are each capable of communication using one or more of the protocols. The communication links may be switched from one WBG to another or from one protocol to another during a communication session to continue the session under the control of a Universal System Traffic Controller. Numerous other applications of the UMMADs for unique identification and e-commerce are disclosed.

Abstract: A dual mode mobile terminal has a dual mode in which said mobile terminal can be connected to any of two different wireless communications systems (hereinafter referred to as systems 1 and 2). The mobile terminal can be connected to optimum wireless communications system by considering conditions at which the mobile terminal is (moving speed, communication data rate) even if it is in the state of communicating using any of systems 1 and 2. The mobile terminal (3) which can be connected to any of the system 1 having a wide service area and medium and low communication data rate and the system 2 having a local service area and high communication data rate determines whether or not it is in the service area of the systems 1 and 2.

  • Patent number: 7620400
Abstract: The present Inter-System Message Delivery System increases the SMS text message delivery success rate. When a mobile subscriber station roams outside of the confines of the cell in which it is presently registered, the delivery of SMS messages to mobile subscriber stations fails, since the mobile subscriber station is not present in the Serving Mobile Switching Center to receive the SMS message. This is particularly common when the mobile subscriber station is moving within the confines of a border cell or multiple cells of a Border Mobile Switching Center and is not yet registered at this Border Mobile Switching Center. The SMS message delivery process initiates a page to the mobile subscriber station via inter-system or inter-Mobile Switching Center paging.

Abstract: A radio access network (24) comprises a radio network control node (26); a database (40); and a femto radio base station node (28f) serving a femtocell (Cf) of the radio access network. The femto radio base station node (28f) comprises a receiver (54) for receiving scanned cell information broadcast for one or more receivable cells of the radio access network, and a reporting unit (60). The reporting unit (60) provides the scanned cell information for the one or more receivable cells of the radio access network to the radio network control node (26). The radio network control node (60) is arranged, upon receipt of the scanned cell information, for providing configuration information to the femto radio base station node (for configuring the femto radio base station node) and for storing macro cell information for one or more receivable cells in the database (40). The macrocell information is stored in the database (40) in association with the femto radio base station node.

  • Patent number: 7613457
Abstract: A method, system, and business model are disclosed for supporting handover between a mobile host and a corresponding node located in a heterogeneous network. Handover paths are established to accommodate a plurality of quality of service properties. Admission control is performed that considers the established handover paths and an established first reservation path. Gateways are contacted to determine a handover path to use. The determined handover path is used to support vertical handover. A second reservation path is established while maintaining the first reservation path and the handover path.

  • Patent number: 7610025
Abstract: At least one feature provides a way to perform point-to-multipoint transmissions using adaptive or directional antennas while reducing antenna pattern distortion. Generally, rather than transmitting the same waveform to two or more receivers, an information-bearing signal is transformed into different decorrelated waveforms and each decorrelated waveform is transmitted to a different receiver. In one implementation, an information-bearing signal is transformed into two decorrelated signals such that their crosscorrelation, or autocorrelation of the information-bearing signal, is zero or very small. Such decorrelation may be achieved by sending a first signal to a first receiver while sending a second signal, having a radio frequency spectrum that is the spectrally inverted version of the first signal, to a second receiver. In another implementation, a first signal is transmitted to a first receiver and is also transmitted to a second receiver with a time delay.

  • Patent number: 7599695
Abstract: Each mobile station is accommodated in a base station through a radio transmission path. A base station control device controls each base station. A mobile station is accommodated in a first base station. Each of the base stations notifies the mobile station of the condition of the communication resources of the base station, respectively. If the mobile station judges that it is advantageous to be accommodated in a second base station instead of the first base station, the mobile station makes a request for hand-off to the base station control device. The base station control device issues a hand-off command to both of the first and second base stations. Then, the mobile station is accommodated in the second base station.

  • Patent number: 7565148
Abstract: Techniques and systems for designing a network providing communication and location identification services are described. A solution point comprising parameters for each of a plurality of base stations is generated. A coverage and locatability performance value for the solution point is computed, as well as derivatives of the performance value. The coverage and locatability performance value and its derivatives are used to indicate favorable directions for searching for subsequent solution points, and subsequent solution points are generated and compared against previous solution points until an optimum solution point is found. The coverage and locatability performance value is a weighted sum of coverage and locatability values for each point in the service area of the network, with coverage values representing forward and reverse link quality and locatability values representing the probability that a point will experience an acceptable power level from at least four base stations.
