Hybrid Allocation Patents (Class 455/451)
  • Patent number: 7957356
Abstract: A scalable medium access control (“MAC”) module is provided that avoids conflict resource reservation so that network performance does not degrade as the number of hops or nodes in a wireless network increases. The MAC also provides different access schemes for traffic with different quality of service (“QoS”) requirements such that QoS is guaranteed and network resources are efficiently utilized. Furthermore, the resource allocation scheme determines the routing path as resources is allocated for data traffic, thereby achieving more robust layer-2 routing at the MAC layer. Finally, the scalable MAC is compliant with both WiMedia MAC and IEEE 802.15.3 MAC.

  • Patent number: 7957352
Abstract: Various schemes for performing inter-system handoff, e.g., from a UTRAN to a cdma2000 radio access network (RAN) are described. For a MAHHO scheme, the UTRAN uses measurements obtained by a multi-RAT device to determine suitable cdma2000 cell(s) for handover. The measurements are obtained by a candidate frequency search procedure, and the handover is accomplished by a handoff execution procedure. For a MDHHO scheme, the UTRAN relies on location information for the multi-RAT device to select suitable cdma2000 cell(s) for handover. For a CRHHO scheme, a new call is established on the cdma2000 RAN and the pending call on the UTRAN is released in a manner such that the handover appears seamless to the multi-RAT device. The multi-RAT device includes two modem processors that perform processing for the UTRAN and cdma2000 RAN and an application processor that controls the modem processors.

Abstract: A method and wireless communication system for providing channel assignment information used to support an uplink (UL) channel and a downlink (DL) channel. The system includes at least one Node-B and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The WTRU communicates with the Node-B via a common control channel, the UL channel and the DL channel. The WTRU receives a message from the Node-B via the common control channel. A system constructed according to the technique may include an aggregation and queuing layer. Station queues may be processed by the aggregation and queuing layer before being given to radio hardware for transmission. In an illustrative embodiment, when frames are received by the aggregation and queuing layer, the packet will be assigned a target delivery time (TDT) and an acceptable delivery time (ADT). The TDT is the “ideal” time to transmit a frame, based on its jitter and throughput requirements. Frames are mapped on to a time axis for transmission by TDT. In an illustrative embodiment, each frame is mapped by priority, so that there are separate maps for voice, video, best effort, and background frames. There will be gaps between frames for transmission that can be used for aggregation.

A modular MAC architecture provides a group of nodes with the ability to simultaneously communicate with each other using multiple separate communication channels during the same timeslots. The additional throughput gained by employing multiple communication channels is amplified by dynamically mapping the communication channels and timeslots in a network so that multiple channels can be reused simultaneously throughout the network during the same timeslot in a fashion that does not create collisions.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for establishing a call connection in a wireless terminal, which can make a call connection using one line number when a call connection fails through another line number in a wireless terminal subscribing to a service in which the portable terminal uses two line numbers. The method includes receiving call release signals from a mobile switching center with respect to a call request of the wireless terminal; reattempting the call request in the wireless terminal with respect to the mobile switching center using a line number having priority, when the call release signal is received from the mobile switching center to the wireless terminal; and assigning resources from a resource pool used for another purpose so as to establish the call connection to the line number having priority when the mobile switching center receives the call request, which uses the line number having the priority, from the wireless terminal again.

Abstract: A base station for use in a wireless network capable of communicating according to a multi-carrier protocol. The base station communicates with subscriber stations using a first pre-defined set of subcarriers. If the base station determines that no additional subcarriers are available in the first pre-defined set to communicate with a first subscriber station, the base station borrows subcarrier resources by selecting a first subcarrier in a second pre-defined set of subcarriers used by a first neighboring base station and allocates the first subcarrier in the second pre-defined set to communicate with the first subscriber station.

Abstract: This invention provides a method for improved frequency agility and preferably includes transmitting and receiving data on a primary channel; finding a secondary channel substantially free from interference during a period between data transmissions on the primary channel; and transmitting and receiving data on the secondary channel when an unacceptable level of interference is detected on the primary channel. In an alternate embodiment, data is preferably transmitted on a primary and a secondary channel during separate periods of a transmission interval. If an unacceptable level of interference is detected on either the primary or secondary channels, then the other channel is used for data transmission during one of the periods while another one of the periods is used to identify a new channel substantially free from interference to replace the bad channel.

Abstract: A base station (26) provides service in a satellite communications (SATCOM) system (22) to a terminal (24). The SATCOM system (22) operates in accordance with a first standard (43), and the terminal (24) is unable to communicate in accordance with the first standard (43). Methodology entails receiving, at a SATCOM resource controller (32), a request (62) for a satellite resource (46) from the base station (26). The satellite resource (46) is allocated to the base station (26) and the controller (32) sends a message (58) with the allocated satellite resource (46). The base station (26) applies a second standard (48), defining a specific set of functional and performance characteristics, to the satellite resource (46). The terminal (24) is enabled to perform satellite communications in accordance with the second standard (48) using the satellite resource (46).

Abstract: The embodiments of the invention provide an adaptive method for base station cooperation in a wireless network. In a multi-user communications network that includes base stations, and in which each base station is associated with a cell, and in which each cell includes one or more mobile stations, each base station determines pre-coding matrices for full-cooperation, semi-cooperation and non-cooperation. Each base stations also determines a sum rate SRfull for full-cooperation, a sum rate SRsemi for semi-cooperation, and a sum rate SRnon for non-cooperation. Then, each base station selects the pre-coding for full-cooperation, the pre-coding matrices for semi cooperation, or the pre-coding matrices for non cooperation. Each base station transmits signals according to the selected pre-coding matrices.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus enable a femto radio base station (28f), initially connected to a first or default radio network controller node (261), to be redirected/reconnected to a second or correct radio network controller node (262) for use as an active radio network controller node for the femto radio base station (28f). The redirection/reconnection is accomplished by using location-indicative information obtained from a user equipment unit (30) which is in radio communication with the femto radio base station (28f). The technique of redirection is particularly valuable when the femto radio base station (28f) does not have its own receiver for ascertaining the radio access network (RAN) environment.

Abstract: In a spectrum allocation method in a cellular communication system, a cell pattern is divided into clusters each containing a plurality of adjacent cells. A pool of forward and return link bearers is allocated to each cluster and may be shared among cells within the cluster. Bearers are reused between blusters having a sufficiently high mutual isolation. Preferably, the same time slot in a return link bearer is allocated to multiple users within the cluster. The receiver of the shared return link bearer uses multi-user detection techniques to separately decode the signals from each user sharing a time slot, using the spatial diversity of the individual cells.
