Abstract: Downstream link signals are transmitted between a base station and a distribution station within an upstream frequency bandwidth allocated to the cellular system for upstream communication for mobile stations. Upstream link signals are transmitted between the distribution station and the base station within a downstream frequency bandwidth allocated to the cellular system for upstream communication for mobile stations. The distribution station frequency shifts the downstream link signals from the upstream frequency bandwidth to a downstream coverage frequency within the downstream frequency bandwidth and frequency shifts upstream coverage signals from the upstream frequency bandwidth to an upstream link frequency within the downstream frequency bandwidth. Interception and interference of link signals is reduced since the mobile stations do not receive signals within the upstream frequency bandwidth or transmit signals within the downstream frequency bandwidth.

Abstract: A wireless communication system is configured to allow for the provisioning of partitioned telecommunication service to subscribers. A wireless switch contains a partition table which associates a service provider with each wireless terminal which has the switch as its home switch. When providing telecommunication services to a subscriber using a wireless terminal, the switch provides such services using resources associated with the service provider associated with the subscriber. In one embodiment, such a resource may be a subscriber profile database such that multiple service providers maintain separate subscriber profile databases connected to the switch. The switch, upon determining the service provider associated with a subscriber requesting service, will retrieve the subscriber's profile from the subscriber database associated with the identified service provider. The switch then provides services in accordance with the retrieved profile.

  • Patent number: 6377787
Abstract: A communication device locates a preferable wireless service provider in a multi-service provider environment using a frequency band search schedule. Initially, the communications device registers with a less preferred service provider in a first frequency band. While remaining registered with the less preferred service provider, the device examines several frequency bands in the order specified by the frequency band search schedule. A frequency band is examined by dividing the frequency band into many sub-bands, and by locating the strongest signal above a threshold within the sub-band being examined. The examination continues until a second frequency band having a more preferred service provider is located. The communication device then registers with the more preferred service provider. The category of service provider may be identified and displayed on the communication device.

Abstract: A radio communication system is disclosed, wherein caller identification information is sent to called radios prior to the initiation of voice communications. The called radio's current checked-in cell sends call set up messages to the called radio and receives a response from the called radio. The cell then sends page information comprising the calling, or source, radio's identification. Voice communications are established immediately following the page data transmission. The called user is notified of the page information and can access the page message to determine which radio initiated the incoming call.

  • Patent number: 6151498
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for allowing a Gateway Mobile Positioning Center (GMPC) to route positioning requests to the Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) where the subscriber is currently located without the need for storing the subscriber's serving Mobile Positioning Center (MPC) address in the Home Location Register (HLR). When an external Requesting Application (RA) wants to locate a particular Mobile Station (MS), the RA contacts the GMPC, and provides the directory number of the subscriber that needs to be located. The GMPC then sends a request for routing information, e.g., the address of the serving Mobile Switching Center (MSC), to the subscriber's HLR. The HLR then returns the routing information to the GMPC, which can then send the positioning request to the serving MSC, using the MSC address. The serving MSC can then route the positioning request to the serving Mobile Positioning Center.

  • Patent number: 6134231
Abstract: A multiple access communications channel is punctured at randomly selected time periods to reduce system-wide interference levels. During the puncturing time period, all users are restricted from accessing the communications channel. Puncturing is implemented as a restriction to communications channel access in addition to any other restrictions implicated by use of a particular multiple access protocol. Thus, a control flag on a forward channel is set not only when a reverse channel is either busy with or reserved for the communications of another user, but also when the reverse channel is closed by puncturing to all user communications.
