  • Patent number: 8548499
Abstract: The last known location of a lost or stolen device can be determined based on the device's last communication with a wireless data network. A portable device can be set up to communicate its location to a server after it obtains a wireless connection to a wireless data network and registers a most recent location with the server. A device can be set up to communicate its location based on at least one of communication with wireless data network hardware or portable device GPS location determined after the device obtains a wireless connection to a wireless data network. Location is stored until a subsequent location is registered in the server. The server can be programmed to send at least one of “lost” message, ringtone, lock code and wipe command to a lost or stolen portable device. The server can be programmed to provide map location information for the last known location of the lost portable device.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention recite a system having Doppler-based control of a mobile device. In one embodiment, at least one measured Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Doppler frequency shift measurement corresponding to a GNSS signal measured at a mobile electronic device is received. The speed of the remote device is then determined based at least in part upon the GNSS Doppler frequency shift measurement. An operation of the remote device is then controlled from the base station when the speed of the remote device exceeds a speed threshold.

Abstract: To localize a mobile device in an indoor area, labels are positioned at locations throughout the indoor area and signal strength is recorded at the label positions from different wireless network access points that are available in the indoor area. As a user traverses the indoor area with the mobile device, individual label identifiers are entered into the mobile device and the strength of the wireless network signals is recorded at each label position. The sampled wireless network signal strength and the corresponding label identifiers and positions are recorded to generate a mapping that identifies wireless network signal strength at each of the different label positions in the indoor area. Abstract: Methods and systems for profiling the locations of users of wireless communication terminals. A profiling engine may accept data points regarding a given target. Each data point may indicate a location of the target at a certain measurement time. • Patent number: 8532676
Abstract: Methods for generating more accurate location estimates are based on indicative factors. The factors are gleaned from wireless signals that were received by a wireless terminal and from other network-specific data. Each factor is probative of whether the wireless signals were received by the wireless terminal: (i) indoors versus outdoors, and/or (ii) “above-the-clutter” versus “below-the-clutter” of ambient wireless signals, and/or (iii) while moving at a certain speed classification, e.g., stationary/pedestrian versus vehicular speeds. Each factor tends to prove or disprove the particular characteristic. The result is an estimated probability, such as the probability that the wireless terminal received the signals indoors. The estimated probability is applied to the analysis of candidate locations, eliminating some candidates from further consideration. This enables computational resources to focus on the remaining higher-likelihood candidate locations and provides improved accuracy in the location estimate.

Abstract: Systems and methods for determining a location based on historical data are disclosed. Generally, a location determination component receives a request for information from a wireless device, where the request is associated with at least two network access points (NAPs). The location determination component determines which of the at least two NAPs has a greater precedence and estimates a current location of the wireless device based on a known location of the current NAP and a known location of a previously-current NAP associated with the wireless device.

  • Patent number: 8494513
Abstract: A spatio-temporal random voting scheme is provided that incorporates location distribution, spatial randomness, and temporal randomness in the collection of information from a plurality of sensing devices within the cognitive network. The region is divided into a plurality of sectors, where each sector is a portion of the region. A subset of sectors is selected from the plurality of sectors in the region to provide spatial randomness. A device is randomly selected from each sector in the subset of sectors to provide additional spatial randomness to the information collection process. Temporal randomness may be introduced by randomly selecting a timeslot within a sensing window period in which devices are to scan a frequency spectrum band to determine if a signal energy above a threshold is detected. Sensing reports are then collected from the selected sensing devices and used to determine whether the frequency spectrum band is available or in use.

  • Patent number: 8494556
Abstract: In a method for calibrating a propagation-time-based localization system in a computer-assisted manner, the position of a mobile object in a predetermined environment can be determined by detecting propagation-time-based variables of multiple base stations, wherein the propagation-time-based variable of a base station represents the propagation time of a signal between an object radio unit and the base station. The object is moved and the variables of the base stations are detected in the process at multiple measuring times. The minimum value of the variables of a base station is associated with a predefined minimum distance between the object and base station and the maximum value with a predefined maximum distance. A predefined dependence of the distances between the object and base station is scaled to the association of the minimum and maximum value. The scaled dependence is then used when determining the position of the mobile object.

Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for providing wireless coverage redundancy in case, for example, the backhaul of an access point (AP) base station is not available. In one embodiment, the method involves monitoring the backhaul, and in response to the backhaul being available, facilitating communication between an access terminal (AT) and the macro network via the backhaul. In addition, or in the alternative (e.g., when the backhaul is not available), a communication signal between the AT and a macro base station (or another AP base station) may be boosted.

Abstract: A method for provision of position determination assisting data in a cellular communication network comprises establishing (204) of a cell relation configuration for a user equipment. The cell relation configuration comprises cell identities of cells, in which signals fulfill a specific radio condition criterion when received. The method further comprises performing (206) of a high-precision position determination for the user equipment. The establishing and performing steps (204, 206) are repeated a plurality of times. Positioning points belonging to the same cell relation configuration are clustered (208) and a polygon is associated (212) with each result cluster. The association (212) comprises encompassing of a result cluster by a polygon, altering of the polygon corners along defined paths to improve a predetermined criterion, and counteracting that polygon corners are gathering at a minor portion of a circumference.

Abstract: A system and method are provided that enable a mobile device when out-of-coverage and thus unable to send or receive messages to rely on other mobile devices which are also out-of-coverage as “hosts” for their outgoing messages such that when one of the hosts comes back into coverage the host mobile device (HMD) can send the outgoing messages on behalf of the originating or “source” mobile device (SMD). The system and method may comprise a pairing procedure to determine the suitability of a mobile device being an HMD according to criteria such as battery power, memory availability and whether the device is also out of coverage. When coming back into coverage, information is obtained from the data communication system to determine whether others have already sent messages that have been provided to host mobile devices.
