At System Equipment (i.e., Base Station) Patents (Class 455/456.5)
  • Patent number: 8483719
Abstract: A system and method for determining the location of a re-deployable base station is disclosed. The disclosed system and method allow for accurate determination of the location of a re-deployable base station, such as a femto base station (FBS), using position information obtained from a mobile station (MS) that is communicating with the FBS being located. The position information can include the location of the mobile device as estimated using one or more satellite positioning systems or cellular network based positioning systems. The position information can also include data identifying pilots from base stations and/or other FBS's that the MS is receiving. A determination of the propagation loss between the MS and the FBS is used to estimate the distance between the mobile device and the FBS. The location of the FBS is determined based on the received position information and the determined distance between the MS and the FBS.

  • Patent number: 8483718
Abstract: Networks and methods are disclosed for accurately determining the location of a mobile device for a UMA network. When placing a special number call, such as a 9-1-1 call, the mobile device transmits access point identifiers (AP-ID) for a plurality of the access points accessible to the mobile device. A UNC in the UMA network receives the plurality of AP-ID's from the mobile device. The UNC is connected to a location system and transmits the AP-ID's to the location system over the connection. The location system receives the AP-ID's over the connection and queries an access point database that stores a location for each access point registered in the database. The location system then identifies a plurality of locations for the plurality of access points from the access point database, and estimates the location of the mobile device based on the plurality of locations identified for the plurality of access points.

  • Patent number: 8478291
Abstract: A large volume of high accuracy location data is determined in many commercial wireless networks from location based services (LBS) and, in the United States, for E911. Uplink-Time-Difference-of-Arrival (UTDOA) and Assisted GPS (AGPS) are the predominant geolocation technologies providing these high accuracy locations. In the US alone over 10 million wireless subscribers are located every month because they dial the national emergency number “911” on their mobile phones. This rich set of location data provides an a priori distribution of the location of subscribers in the wireless network. All digital wireless communications networks have a mechanism for the subscribers to time synchronize their handsets to the network. This mechanism provides a band of ranges from the serving cell site to the handset. An a posteriori location estimate can be determined very quickly by considering the a priori distribution of callers in the range band that the current subscriber is in.

If a mobile location server (MLS) sends a location-determination message to a mobile station and does not receive a response back from the mobile station, there is a chance that the mobile station is not provisioned with a correct address of the MLS and that the mobile station therefore did not respond. To help jump start the location-determination process, the MLS may respond to that situation by instead causing a trusted server such as an over-the-air-service-provisioning (OTASP) server to send a location-determination message to the mobile station, triggering a response from the mobile station.

Abstract: A mobile station uses a search window to search for a target pilot signal transmitted by a target transmitter in a spread spectrum communication system. The search window may be centered on the expected phase of the target pilot signal at the mobile station. To calculate the expected phase, the mobile station estimates a transmission delay associated with the target pilot signal, based on at least the target transmitter's location and the mobile station's location. The transmission delay may account for the time it takes for the target pilot signal to propagate from the target transmitter to the mobile station. The expected phase of the target pilot signal may then be calculated based on at least a nominal phase of the target pilot signal (e.g., the phase when transmitted by the target transmitter) and the estimated transmission delay.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for reducing wireless telecommunication costs for enterprises having a plurality of PBX-equipped sites, connected by either a public network (e.g., the PSTN, the Internet, etc.), a private network (e.g., leased lines, a virtual private network [VPN] over the Internet, etc.), or some combination of public and private networks. In particular, the illustrative embodiments of the present invention attempt to reduce telecommunication costs by advantageously routing calls from an off-premises wireless terminal belonging to the enterprise via one or more of the enterprise's private branch exchanges. The present invention is especially advantageous in that it can reduce telecommunication costs for calls from an off-premises wireless terminal to any type of destination: another cell phone, a wireline terminal, a private branch exchange, etc.

Abstract: A network for obfuscating satellite terminal transmission activity may include a satellite, a plurality of distributed satellite terminals transmitting signals to and receiving signals from the satellite, and a computer. The computer may compute how much transmission power spectral density each of the distributed satellite terminals is or would be transmitting based on allocated data rates of each of the distributed satellite terminals. The computer may calculate an aggregate transmission power spectral density which is being used or would be used by all of the distributed satellite terminals. The computer may calculate how much unused transmission power spectral density is available to the network for obfuscation by subtracting from a total network regulatory transmission power spectral density limit the aggregate transmission power spectral density.

  • Patent number: 8447332
Abstract: A platform for providing location-based services is disclosed. A location data collection client running on a mobile device periodically obtains data allowing determination of the geographic location of the mobile device (e.g., GPS, cell tower, or WiFi data) and transmits that data and mobile device-specific information to a location-based services (LBS) platform server. The LBS platform server determines geographic location of the mobile device from the received data. For example, the LBS platform server accesses databases associating latitude and longitude coordinates with cell tower data or WiFi data and updates mobile device location to maintain current location information for the mobile device, which can be used as a proxy for the location of a mobile device user. The LBS platform server further includes a set of APIs allowing third-party services providers to access to the location data.

Abstract: A modular data processing system (200) for processing communication session data from a cellular mobile communications system (210) comprises at least two autonomous data processing units (340 ). The autonomous data processing units (340 ) are arranged in parallel, and are operable simultaneously. Each data processing unit (340) receives and processes raw communication session data from an associated set of controllers of the cellular mobile communications system (210). At least one data collection subsystem (215) supplies the raw communication session data to the at least two autonomous data processing units (340), for calls made within the coverage area of the set of controllers associated with the data processing unit. Processed data may be available more rapidly with the invention. The invention is scalable, and the system may expand as a cellular mobile communications system grows.

  • Patent number: 8442483
Abstract: A method for communicating location to an emergency service system. A wireless communication device (WCD) such as a cell phone attains a GPS location fix when outdoors and then uses dead reckoning to determine its direction(s) and distance(s) of travel reaching a position inside a building. When a user of the WCD places an emergency call, the WCD conveys an indication of its indoor location in a signaling message to an emergency service center, and an intermediation system such as an IMS system translates the indoor location indication to a textual description of a portion of the building (e.g., room, cubicle, zone, etc.) that encompasses the indicated location. An emergency service operator can thus receive the building portion description, to facilitate emergency service response. Further, a similar process can then be repeated during the call, to provide an updated building portion description to the operator.
