Mobile stations with higher priority values will attempt to access the control channel within shorter time periods and more frequently than those with lower priority values.

The methods avoid excessive use of air interface resources by excluding wireless devices which are unable to successfully range. That is, “bad” or “problem” wireless devices are excluded from access to the network.

The wireless communication apparatus for communicating in an autonomous distributed wireless network includes a detection unit which generates a detection signal by detecting a first wireless signal from a first wireless apparatus; a wireless circuit which receives a second wireless signal relating to said first wireless signal, transmitted from a second wireless apparatus which received said first wireless signal; a signal estimation unit which estimates said detection signal and the received second wireless signal; a signal selector which selects either said detection signal or the received second wireless signal, based on an estimation result of said signal estimation unit; and a demodulator which demodulates the signal selected by said signal selector.

A critical component of this new link adaptation system is a “no transmission” cutoff mode that is selected for SIR below a base threshold value. This new mode prevents system instability and misallocation of bandwidth in a wireless communication system.

On the other hand, if the request for the data service is not accepted, the mobile station is set in a data service deregistered state. A timer is initialized with an initial value that is less than the periodic location update timer value and started. In response to an expiration of the timer, the mobile station repeats the transmission of the request for the data service and any reattempts in response to any rejections of the request.

If the percentage drop in signal strength exceeds a specified percentage, an advisory alert is effectuated. The criteria that trigger an advisory alert may be non-programmable, or is modifiable in programmable embodiments.
