Abstract: Techniques for paging user equipments (UEs) in a wireless communication system are described. In one aspect, a cell sends a paging indicator to a UE, monitors for an acknowledgement from the UE, and sends a page message to the UE if an acknowledgement is received from the UE. The cell may receive channel quality information from the UE and may send the page message with link adaptation and/or HARQ to improve performance. In another aspect, a cell sends a paging indicator on a shared control channel to a UE and sends a page message on a shared data channel to the UE. The paging indicator and page message may be sent from multiple cells to the UE. Alternatively, the paging indicator may be sent from multiple cells to the UE, and the page message may be sent from a single cell to the UE.

By ordering the channel assignment in each of the interfering cells according to a pattern, for example, according to the distance from a base station (determined by power levels), the mobile stations will become paired on the same channel in a manner to reduce interference between them. In one embodiment, this intelligent assignment is accomplished by assigning mobile stations in one cell such that the mobile station having the strongest signal is assigned channel A while in the interfering cell the mobile station with the weakest signal is assigned to channel A. Abstract: A new media access control (MAC) protocol for cognitive wireless networks is described. The nodes collaborate to achieve a combined view of spectrum utilization in their local vicinity, in which scheduled users and empty time segments are mapped across a wide range of frequencies. Nodes negotiate with each other to reserve idle segments of the spectrum for packet exchange on negotiated frequencies. Control packet structure allows nodes to become prescient of the local spectrum utilization during handshaking. A cognitive device operating under the new MAC has a first radio that both scans the spectrum and monitors a control channel; and a second reconfigurable radio with adjustable parameters, including frequency and bandwidth, for packet transmission.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for mitigating data server time-outs in e.g., a hybrid wireless network. In one exemplary embodiment, a client device operating in a hybrid network environment utilizes its knowledge about tune-away periods so as to minimally affect data network operation. For example, during periods of data downlink activity, the client device induces some delay in the acknowledgement packets sent back towards the network prior to entering into a tune away period. These delayed acknowledgement packets result in an increased retransmission time out period value thereby reducing the probability of encountering a data server time-out. Alternative embodiments are also discussed which preoccupy the network apparatus during these tune away periods so as to also mitigate time-outs during these periods. These mitigation algorithms are useful in both downlink and uplink data transmissions. Apparatus for implementing these methodologies are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method and system for setting up a communication with a given mobile station served by a RAN that defines one or more coverage areas. The RAN may receive an indication of a location of the given mobile station. The RAN may then use the location of the given mobile station to identify one or more wireless coverage areas associated with the given mobile station. The RAN may also receive a request to set up a communication with the given mobile station. In response, the RAN may assign a channel for the communication to the given mobile station in each identified wireless coverage area without first paging the given mobile station.

Abstract: Exemplary methods and systems are disclosed herein that may, among other benefits, help a mobile station to conserve power by intelligently determining how often to scan for incoming pages. An exemplary method may be carried out by a mobile station that has most-recently registered with a radio access network in a zone of last registration, and involves the mobile station (a) determining a location of the mobile station in relation to the zone of last registration, (b) using the location of the mobile station in relation to the zone of last registration as a basis for determining a scan period to wait between scans of the paging channel; and (c) periodically scanning the paging channel according to the determined scan period. Furthermore, an exemplary method may be carried out in order to conserve battery power when a mobile station determines that its battery power is low.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for analyzing radio frequency (RF) data. RF data is received from one or more RF sensors, wherein the RF data is collected over a particular frequency range and resolution bandwidth. One or more frequencies not in use are determined based on the RF data and a signal level threshold. One or more recommended frequencies for use are calculated based on the one or more open frequencies and an intermodulation function, wherein each of the one or more recommended frequencies reduces a potential for intermodulation distortion than other frequencies in the frequency range.

  • Patent number: 8838154
Abstract: An access network may receive an incoming communication for an idle access terminal having a last-known location in a first service area of the access network. In response to receiving the incoming communication, the access network may determine whether the last-known location is proximate to a border between the first service area and a second service area of the access network. If so, the access network may define a border paging area encompassing one or more coverage areas within the second service area that are proximate to the last-known location. In turn, the access network may determine a representative paging-channel occupancy of the border paging area. Based on the representative paging-channel occupancy, the access network may then select a time at which to initiate a border page of the access terminal in the border paging area and then perhaps initiate the border page at the selected time.

Abstract: A network sends an indication of discontinuous reception period (ldle_Mode_DRX_Period) and an indication of number of paging groups (Paging_Group_Count). Paging occasions for a user equipment are determined by a predetermined formula. One exemplary formula is SFN mod IDLE_Mode_DRX_Period=(IDLE_Mode_DRX_Period div Paging_Group_Count) *(ID) mod (Paging_Group_Count); where SFN is system frame number and ID is the identifier of the user equipment, which can be IMSI or some value derived from IMSI. The UE's temporary ID is sent during a determined paging occasion, which maps to a paging channel on which the page is sent. Options for restricting the paging occasion to less than a frame, and for offsetting the paging occasions from that of the above formula are detailed.

Abstract: The present invention presents a method and a controller for selecting the type of connection used to connect a terminal device to a serving base station. The connection type is selected on the basis of monitored communication-environmental parameters of the terminal device. The selection is made between a direct cellular radio connection and a relayed cellular radio connection. The relayed connection is established through another terminal device acting as a relay terminal for the connection being relayed. A direct device-to-device link between the two terminal devices is established as a cognitive radio connection, and a radio access technology and communication parameters of the device-to-device link may be negotiated between the terminal devices. The relay terminal then links the device-to-device link to a direct cellular radio connection between the relay terminal and the serving base station.
