  • Patent number: 8538464
Abstract: Code words are assigned to subscriber stations or groups of subscriber stations in a communication network for a quick paging mechanism in which the assigned code words are transmitted as quick paging signals over unused frequency resources to signal the subscriber stations. Subsets of multiple code words from a set of code words can be assigned to respective paging groups, and overlapping subsets can be assigned to multiple paging groups. This enables a single code word to be used to address either a single paging group or multiple paging groups.

Abstract: In a conventional cellular wireless communication system that included a plurality of base station apparatuses having a plurality of antennas, just two antennas were used for simultaneous transmission by transmission diversity, and the antenna usage efficiency was low. According to the present invention, a free transmission diversity antenna for transmission to the edge of a cell is used to send a signal to a terminal located around the center of the cell without causing interference to a terminal located around the edge of the cell. The two terminals located around the edge of the cell and around the center of the cell are paired for simultaneous signal transmission. A signal directed to the edge of the cell and a signal directed to the center of the cell are sent with greatly different transmission power. This reduces the interference caused by the signal directed to the center of the cell to an insignificant level for the terminal located around the edge of the cell.

  • Patent number: 8509699
Abstract: A radio access network (RAN) accumulates page messages in a paging buffer for subsequent transmission into a wireless coverage area. A buffer monitor is configured to periodically monitor the occupancy of the paging buffer and to detect when there is a surge in the paging buffer occupancy (e.g., when the occupancy increases by at least a threshold amount during an evaluation time period). When the buffer monitor detects a surge in paging buffer occupancy, the RAN transmits a control message that changes one or more access parameters that mobile stations operating in the wireless coverage area use to determine when to transmit responses to page messages. Because of the changed access parameters, mobile stations that receive page messages in the same time period are less likely to transmit responses in the same access cycle channel, thereby reducing the possibility of access probe collisions.

Abstract: A distance-based paging system distributes the decision as to which base stations should send a page to a terminal. The Radio Network Controller (RNC) simply stores the location information and paging range (e.g., the route update radius) of the reference sector for each terminal. When a page message needs to be sent to the terminal, the RNC sends the location information and paging range to each base station in a broadcast or a multicast message that includes the location coordinates and route update radius of the reference sector in the message header, and the information to be sent in the over the air page in the message payload. Each base station determines whether one or more of its sectors is located within the paging area, and broadcasts a page based on the payload of the message to the terminal if it is within the paging area or discards the paging message if it is not.

When the connection information is received, the generator generates a second message used to have the incoming signal notification included in the communication channel. The second interface unit outputs the generated second message to the base station apparatus that has established the communication channel with the terminal.

  • Patent number: 8467784
Abstract: Techniques for performing WLAN system scanning and selection are described. A terminal performs multiple iterations of scan to detect for WLAN systems. A scan list containing at least one WLAN system to detect for is initially determined. For each scan iteration, a scan type may be selected from among the supported scan types. The selected scan type may indicate passive scan or active scan, frequency channels to scan, etc. A scan may be performed based on the selected scan type. Signal strength measurements are obtained for access points received during the scan and used to identify detected access points. After all scan iterations are completed, candidates access points are identified based on the scan results, e.g., based on the signal strength measurements for the detected access points and a detection threshold. The best candidate access point may be selected for association by the terminal.

Abstract: A technique for tuning the receiver (RX) synthesizer independently from the transmitter (TX) synthesizer helps a mobile communication device with multiple SIMs to concurrently monitor the paging channel of a first network associated with one SIM while transmitting on a second network associated with a second SIM. By independently tuning the RX and the TX synthesizers, each SIM card can maintain synchronization with the network without disruption of service in either network. As a result, the mobile communication device exhibits an increased ability to maintain communication sessions for two different networks, without the need for a second set of TX/RX synthesizer hardware.

  • Patent number: 8463297
Abstract: A method for use in controlling a mobile device's access to one or more wireless communications networks (WCNs) with an overlaid wireless location system (WLS) includes monitoring a set of one or more predefined signaling links of at least one WCN, and detecting an event associated with the mobile device. Next, using a low-accuracy location function of the WLS, the system determines that the mobile device is within a defined area of interest and is potentially within a defined quiet zone. Next, using a high-accuracy location function of the WLS, the system determines a precise geographic location of the mobile device and based thereon confirms that the mobile device is within the quiet zone or at least within an area of ambiguity around the quiet zone. Finally, the mobile device's access to the wireless communications network is limited, e.g., according to a pre-defined rule established by the carrier.
