  • Patent number: 8503950
Abstract: Approaches for crest factor reduction in a multiband transmitter. An input data signal is placed on a first frequency band, and a second frequency band that is inactive is selected. The second frequency band is out-of-band from the first frequency band. A peak-reducing waveform placed on the second frequency band is generated. The peak-reducing waveform is configured to reduce a plurality of peaks in the data signal. The peak-reducing waveform and the data signal are combined to produce a crest-factor-reduced signal. The crest-factor-reduced signal is transmitted from the multiband transmitter.

Abstract: A reconfigurable RF transceiver for use in either a base station or a mobile station Of a wireless network. The reconfigurable RF transceiver comprises a first receive path that down-converts an incoming RF signal to analog and digital baseband signals. The first receive path in a first mode down-converts the incoming RF signal in a receive frequency band for the base station and in a second mode down-converts the incoming RF signal in a receive frequency band for the mobile station. The reconfigurable RF transceiver further comprises a transmit path for up-converting an outgoing baseband signal to an outgoing RF signal. The transmit path in the first mode up-converts the outgoing baseband signal in a transmit frequency band for the base station and in the second mode up-converts the outgoing baseband signal in a transmit frequency band for the mobile station.

Abstract: Wireless devices may contain multiple radio transceivers, each conforming to different communication protocols. A first transceiver conforming to a first communication protocol in a first wireless device may be able to receive, detect, and/or decode messages transmitted by a second transceiver in a second wireless device conforming to a second communication protocol. The first transceiver may communicate received, detected, and/or decoded information to a different transceiver in the same first wireless device, thus enabling the collocated transceivers to work in concert efficiently. A wideband transceiver using a set of multiple sub-channels in parallel may receive, detect, and/or decode messages transmitted by a narrowband transceiver using a set of multiple channels serially, thereby reducing scan time and power consumption.

  • Patent number: 8422968
Abstract: Wireless circuitry in an electronic device may contain radio-frequency transceiver circuitry and power amplifier circuitry that transmits radio-frequency signals through an antenna. A tap and power detector that are interposed in the radio-frequency signal path between the power amplifier circuitry and the antenna may be used to make output power measurements. Control circuitry may control the wireless circuitry in an open-loop control regime in which output power adjustments are based on a requested power without using the output power measurements. The control circuitry may also control the wireless circuitry in a closed-loop control regime in which the output power measurements serve as a source of real time feedback to determine whether to increase or decrease the output power. The output power may be controlled using linear transition zone power control curves in a transition zone between the open-loop regime and the closed-loop regime.

Abstract: A radio frequency communications system with a first operating frequency band and a second operating frequency band is disclosed. There is a first antenna. A transceiver has a first transmission port, a second transmission port, a first reception port, and a second reception port. In a first front end circuit, a first port is coupled to the antenna, and a second port is coupled to the transceiver. The first front end circuit has a first low noise amplifier, a second low noise amplifier, a first power amplifier, and a second power amplifier. A switching circuit connects the first transmission port, the first reception port, the second transmission port, and the second reception port to the second port of the first front end circuit. The antenna is distant from the transceiver, while the first front end circuit is proximal to the antenna. The first switching circuit is proximal to the transceiver.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a virtual gateway mediates between a dual-mode subscriber device and an IP-based PBX. In particular, the virtual gateway includes a WLAN interface for communicating with the dual-mode subscriber device and a network interface (wired or wireless) for communicating with the IP-based PBX over the Internet. As such, the virtual gateway may relay voice and call control instructions between the dual-mode subscriber device and the IP-based PBX, and may provide the same call control functions to the dual-mode subscriber device provided by the call control processor in existing dual-mode phones. The embodiment further provides a dual-mode subscriber device suitable for operation with the virtual gateway. Because the dual-mode subscriber device does not require a call control processor, the battery life and cost of the device are significantly improved.

Abstract: An antenna system has multiple antenna elements, and multiple connection points allowing multiple users to connect to the antenna system. Each connection point is connected to each of the antenna elements through respective amplitude control circuitry, with the beam shape for each user being controlled by the amplitude control circuitry in the paths between that user's connection point and the antenna elements. The beam shapes for the different users are then independently controllable.

Abstract: Systems and methods for selectively replaying voice data. Voice data received in a communication session is both buffered by the device and played by the device. When input is received from a recipient, the voice data currently being received is no longer played and buffered voice data is replayed to the recipient. While the buffered voice data is replayed, the device continues to buffer any voice data received by the device to ensure that the recipient can listen to all of the voice data in the communication session. By only storing voice data in the buffer, replaying the buffered voice data can catch the real-time voice data. At this point, the device reverts to playing voice data being received while continuing to buffer the voice data.
