Abstract: Consideration of Quality of Service is taken into account during the establishment of a sleep cycle in a mobile station providing real-time services. Upon the mobile station's identification of a need for a real-time service to enter into sleep mode, a request conveying that need is sent to the base station. The base station replies with a start frame number and other sleep parameters. Thereafter the mobile station enters sleep mode comprising sleep intervals interleaved with listening intervals. To prevent transmission packets from being buffered at the mobile station for an excessive period of time due to attempts to transmit packets to the base station during a sleep interval, the length of the sleep interval is set so as not to exceed the maximum latency value reflecting the QoS of the real-time service negotiated during establishment of the real-time services.

Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for optimizing the timing of multi-mode system scans in a wireless communication environment. In one embodiment, the method may involve determining at least one of location and movement of a mobile entity (ME). The method may involve adjusting a timer between preferred system scans based on the at least one of the location and the movement of the ME. For example, determining may involve utilizing a movement sensor (e.g., an accelerometer and/or a voltage-controlled oscillator accumulator) to detect the movement of the ME, and/or receiving signals from a Global Positioning System or the like.

Abstract: A first mobile station configured to operate, in an ad-hoc network, with a second mobile station. The first mobile station includes a transceiver configured to receive a beacon. The beacon indicates a first time slot allocated to the first mobile station and a second time slot allocated to the second mobile station. During the first time slot only the first mobile station is permitted to transmit data. During the second time slot only the second mobile station is permitted to transmit data. A medium access control device is configured to transition the first mobile station from a lower power mode to an active mode prior to the transceiver receiving the beacon, and maintain the first mobile station in the active mode during both the first time slot and the second time slot regardless of whether the first mobile station is receiving data transmitted by the second mobile station.

Abstract: A mobile communication terminal device whose authentication and settlement functions by noncontact proximity communication can be continuously used even after operating voltage from battery power drops is provided. Only when the supply of required power from a battery is lost, a security controller is controlled into a mode in which it operates with low power consumption and noncontact authentication and settlement functions are ensured by external electromagnetic field power. Specifically, the following is implemented: when there is the supply of required power from the battery, it is made possible to carry out high-performance, multifunctional authentication and settlement processing making good use of high-speed processing, mass storage, and the like which are the advantages of the security controller essentially driven by battery; and in an anomalous instance in which the battery remaining capacity is lost, it is made possible to carry out minimal authentication and settlement processing.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for efficient network scanning that selects candidate frequencies based upon the frequency bands that were noted as being active during a previous network scan. A mobile device performs a full network scan on power up or on radio cycle and determines the available active bands. This information is stored as active band information on the device. When the device loses coverage on a selected one of the bands, then it identifies a candidate frequency based upon the stored active band information and attempts to locate a suitable network on the candidate band.

Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for a device to quickly determine if data is being sent to it. If no data is being sent to the device, the device may return to a sleep mode so as to conserve energy. The present invention includes organizing and transmitting, one at a time, all device destination identifiers. If a message listing search indicates that no message is being sent for a device, the device can continue with any other activity that needs servicing, or if no other activity is pending, it may shut down to conserve power until the next wake up period arrives. If the search returns a positive indication, the count value when the identifier is found can be used to determine the location of the pointer to the message.

Abstract: In an embodiment, a computing system causes a computing device to operate in a lower-power state. Data received from a first tier of low-power input source(s) is used to determine user/environmental context and activate a second tier of input source(s) that operate in a higher power range. In each tier the system is running contextual detection to assess whether to engage higher power input sources or sensors to aid the user. With this mechanism, a user is able to have access to a broad range of services without having to explicit switch them on, while the system is able to intelligently manage power and battery life across input sources.
