Abstract: In one illustrative example, methods and apparatus for use in buffering PTT voice communications are described. A mobile station sends a PTT voice communication request in a wireless communication network. Prior to receiving a floor grant in response to the PTT voice communication request, the mobile station receives voice input signals and buffers digital voice data corresponding to the voice input signals, where the digital voice data is produced by encoding and compressing the voice input signals. The mobile station receives the floor grant in response to the PTT voice communication request. Upon receipt of the floor grant, the mobile station retrieves the buffered digital voice data and continues to buffer digital voice data corresponding to the voice input signals, until all of the buffered digital voice data has been sent.

Abstract: Systems of methods for performing queued and moderated communication groups in a system featuring network provided half duplex communications communication group sessions are provided. According to one aspect, a first mobile terminal provides the network with an identification of a second mobile terminal so that the network may automatically grant the transmit capability to the second mobile terminal after a transmitting mobile has finished transmitting communications. Therefore, the second mobile terminal receives the transmit capability without even requesting it, or without the network having to wait to receive a request for the transmit capability. According to another aspect, priority information is pre-assigned during creation of the communication group or dynamically assigned by another mobile user during the talk group session. Granting of the transmit capability and the time duration of the transmit capability is dependent upon the priority information.

Abstract: An apparatus for an enhanced receiver for an RFID Tag Interrogator is described. The enhanced receiver has a zero crossing detector, a phase shifter, a pulse generator and a chopper. The zero crossing detector produces a sampling signal from the current transformer. The phase shifter modifies the sampling signal by producing a 90 degree phase shifted sampling signal. The pulse generator increases time duration of each pulse of the phase shifted sampling signal, which is then fed to the chopper. Thus, the chopper samples the backscattered carrier signal every 90 degree phase shift from the time when the backscattered carrier signal passes the zero crossing. This makes isolation of the backscattered signal from the carrier signal more effective.

Abstract: As described above, when a particular PoC client participating in a PoC session requests media transmission to a PoC server during transmission of media from another PoC client, the PoC server transitions the PoC client with the floor to a suspended state by sending an MB Suspend message and grants the floor to the requesting PoC client. After media transmission of the interrupting PoC client, the PoC server returns the floor to the interrupted PoC client. Therefore, the privileged PoC client in a current PoC infrastructure interrupts the ongoing conversation and sends media, after which the floor is returned to the interrupted PoC client without issuing an explicit media request from the interrupted PoC client. Even in the pre-emptive case scenario where the pre-emptive PoC client interrupts the ongoing conversation, the conversation can be continued in a natural way.

Abstract: Systems of methods for performing queued and moderated talk groups in a system featuring network provided half duplex communications talk group sessions. For queuing, rather than dropping a talk request from a user which is listening, the request is forwarded and maintained in a list which is the used to grant access to the talk channel. For moderated talk groups, a wireless device is designated to be a moderator network device. The requests for the talk channel are then forwarded to the moderator network device. The moderator network device is equipped with functionality allowing a user of the device to select the order in which devices are granted the talk channel.

Abstract: A radio transceiver device includes circuitry for radiating electromagnetic signals at a very high radio frequency both through space, as well as through wave guides that are formed within a substrate material. In one embodiment, the substrate comprises a dielectric substrate formed within a board, for example, a printed circuit board. In another embodiment of the invention, the wave guide is formed within a die of an integrated circuit radio transceiver. A plurality of transceivers with different functionality is defined. Substrate transceivers are operable to transmit through the wave guides, while local transceivers are operable to produce very short range wireless transmissions through space. A third and final transceiver is a typical wireless transceiver for communication with remote (non-local to the device) transceivers. Additionally, a multi-mode transceiver is operable to configure transmit and receive circuitry based upon transmission path.

  • Patent number: 7653401
Abstract: Techniques for filtering broadcast SMS messages at a mobile station based on network configuration, user configuration, and/or user preferences. In one method, a broadcast message is initially received, and one or more filtering criteria are applied to the received broadcast message. The filtering criteria are defined by settings stored in a removable module (e.g., the R-UIM) coupled to the receiver. The received broadcast message is then processed if it is not filtered out by the one or more filtering criteria. The one or more filtering criteria may include (1) those imposed by a service provider and defined in a network configuration setting, (2) those determined by the mobile user and defined in a user configuration setting, (3) those selected by the mobile user based on user preferences, which allow for filtering of broadcast messages based on service category, language, and priority, or (4) any combination of the above.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing latency when setting up a Push-to-Talk (PTT) session from a User Equipment (UE) in a WCDMA radio communication network. When a user opens a PTT application or accesses the contacts page, the UE obtains a radio bearer from the network. The UE may maintain the radio bearer until the session is requested by transmitting periodic Heartbeat messages to the network. The Heartbeat messages have a length sufficient to trigger the network to place the user terminal on a Dedicated Channel (DCH), and the time period between Heartbeat messages is short enough to prevent the UE from being removed from the DCH for inactivity. When the user presses the PTT button, a SIP INVITE message is immediately sent without delay.

Abstract: A method of determining at least an estimate of media latency for push-to-talk communications includes determining a first time associated with transmitting a first packet from a push-to-talk transceiver device. In a disclosed example, the same device receives a second packet that corresponds to the first packet and includes an indication of the first time, a second time associated with receipt of the first packet by another device such as a push-to-talk server and a third time associated with transmission of the second packet to the push-to-talk transceiver device. That same device determines a fourth time associated with receipt of the second packet. In a disclosed example, the push-to-talk transceiver device uses a relationship between the first time, second time, third time and fourth time for determining at least an estimate of media latency associated with the push-to-talk communication corresponding to the first and second packets. A plurality of latency test procedures are disclosed.
