  • Patent number: 5816972
Abstract: A transmission includes a first simple planetary gear set having first, second, and third elements, the first element of the first gear set receiving rotational motion input to the transmission, and a second simple planetary gear set having first, second, and third elements, the first element of the second gear set outputting rotational motion from the transmission and the third element of the second gear set being connected to the third element of the first gear set. The elements of the first gear set include a sun gear, a first carrier, and a first ring gear, and the elements of the second gear set include a second sun gear, a second carrier, and a second ring gear. A first clutch selectively couples the second element of the first gear set to the second element of the second gear set. A second clutch selectively couples the first element of the first gear set to the second element of the second gear set.

  • Patent number: 5788596
Abstract: A power transmission has an electro-hydraulic control for selectively establishing a plurality of clutches and brakes for controlling a plurality of planetary gearsets to establish the transmission drive ratios. During a vehicle stopped condition, two brakes are engaged to restrain rotation of two members of one of the planetary gear sets. This results in braking of the transmission output shaft.

  • Patent number: 5690578
Abstract: A planetary gear transmission has a single sun gear, two ring gears and a carrier assembly having a first pinion gear meshing with the sun gear and one ring, and a second pinion gear meshing with the first pinion gear and the second ring gear. The carrier assembly is continuously connected with a transmission output shaft. Input drive to the planetary gearing is provided through two selectively operable rotating clutches which are connectable with the sun gear and one ring gear, respectively. The sun gear and both ring gears are provided with selectively operable brakes for establishing reaction members within the planetary gear arrangement. In another embodiment of the planetary transmission, a second input drive path is provided through a third selectively operable rotating clutch which is connectable with the other ring gear.

  • Patent number: 5540456
Abstract: A hub for a bicycle can typically have an axle for being non-rotationally connected to a frame of the bicycle, a hub body rotatably mounted about the axle, and a drive element rotatably mounted on the axle. A plurality of transmission elements can preferably be disposed between the axle and the hub body for transmitting a drive force from the drive element to the hub body, and a selection between various gearing ratios provided by the transmission elements can preferably be provided by a selectively engageable ratchet mechanism and a control device for selectively engaging and disengaging the ratchet mechanisms. The ratchet mechanism can be provided by at least one pawl, biased radially inward by at least one spring, to non-rotationally couple a ring body in one direction of rotation with the axle.

  • Patent number: 5267913
Abstract: An automatic transmission for an automotive vehicle includes first and second simple planetary gear units, certain of whose elements are continually interconnected and certain others are releasably connected through operation of friction elements and one-way couplings. The input shaft of the transmission is adapted to drive elements of the planetary gear units through an underdrive gearset and an overdrive gearset. The various speed ratios result by either underdriving or overdriving an element of the planetary gear unit or both underdriving one element and overdriving another element. Several parallel torque delivery paths include a series arrangement of the overrunning coupling in parallel with a friction element. This arrangement permits engine braking during coast conditions when the coupling overruns. The overdrive gearset is available to produce a speed ratio without involving the planetary gear units.

  • Patent number: 5232418
Abstract: A double-acting hydraulic actuator structure for use in an automatic transmission has a two-layered structure which includes first and second frictional engagement element hydraulic actuators. The first hydraulic actuator includes a drum member and a first piston fitted hermetically and slidably in the drum member. The second hydraulic actuator is formed by the interior of the first piston and a second piston fitted hermetically and slidably mounted within the first piston. The first and second pistons are both urged toward their disengaged positions by the action of a common return spring. A second spring is provided for urging the second piston alone against the force of the return spring.

  • Patent number: 5194056
Abstract: In an automatic transmission (1) for motor vehicles with a reduced planetary linkage, whose planet gears (9 and 10) mesh with each other and share a common carrier (11), whose sun gear corotationally mounted on a hollow shaft (4) as well as whose sun gear (13) corotationally mounted on an intermediate shaft can be selectively connected via clutches (3 and 5) with an input shaft, whereby the intermediate shaft (6) can be selectively braked via a first friction brake (16) and a ring gear of the planetary linkage is connected with the driven gear (15) of the automatic transmission (1), a clearly structured design has to be created with simultaneous reduction of construction expeditures. For this purpose, the intermediate shaft (6) is built as a central solid shaft which protrudes beyond the driven gear (15) on the transmission-output side and the first friction brake (16) engages this segment.

  • Patent number: 5129871
Abstract: A shaft connected to a component of a planetary gearset is driveably connected by a coupling to alternate friction elements in accordance with the relative speeds of the coupling members and the direction of rotation of the driven coupling member. The coupling includes a radially inner one-way coupling and an outer one-way coupling, the outer race of the inner coupling and inner race of the outer coupling being the intermediate race, which is connected to the gearset. The inner race and outer race have cam surfaces contacting roller clutch elements located in a cage and spaced mutually about the coupling axis. The cam surfaces of the races are inclined with respect to the adjacent surface of the intermediate race in opposite directions, so that when one coupling drives, the other coupling overruns.
