  • Patent number: 5993104
Abstract: There is disclosed a transportable device and associated method for impeding the motion of a land vehicle travelling along a pathway on a terrain surface. First and second supports are positioned at first and second sides of the pathway, respectively, each capable of being actuated from a compressed condition to an extended condition. A propulsion system is effective to actuate the supports. A barrier extends between the supports at a mean first height that is effective to permit passage of a vehicle when the supports are compressed and supported by each support at a mean second height effective to impede passage of the vehicle when the supports are extended. When the supports are compressed, vehicles pass over the barrier unimpeded. When the supports are extended, the barrier impedes the motion of a vehicle travelling along the pathway. At least one deceleration cable mechanically couples the barrier to a brake system.

  • Patent number: 5975791
Abstract: A vehicle security gate apparatus and methods are provided for inhibiting undesired access to a protected area. The vehicle security gate apparatus preferably has a barricade adapted to be positioned adjacent a roadway to thereby block vehicle passage along the roadway into an area desired to be protected. The apparatus also preferably has a barricade rotating mount connected to the barricade for rotating the barricade about a predetermined axis so that the barricade rotates about the predetermined axis between a vehicle passage position which allows a desired vehicle to readily pass along the roadway into the protected area, a vehicle blocking position which blocks the roadway so as to inhibit an undesired vehicle from readily entering into the protected area, and a vehicle arresting position which arrests an undesired vehicle responsive to an attempt by the undesired vehicle to ram the barricade when the barricade is positioned in the vehicle blocking position.

Abstract: A lockable and removable barrier assembly (10) includes a post (32) which is removably mounted in a sleeve (12). The bottom end (32B) of the post is mounted in the top end (12A) of the sleeve such that a securing opening (14) of the sleeve is aligned with a securing opening (35) of the post. A securing mechanism (42) is located in the inner chamber (32C) of the post. The securing mechanism includes a securing lever (52) which is pivotably mounted at the bottom end (52B) to a mounting bracket (44). The lever includes a securing lug (58) which extends through a securing opening in the post and sleeve to secure the post in position in the sleeve. The top end (52A) of the lever is held in the secured position by a lock (60) which extends through a hole in the end of the lever and through a hole in the locking bracket (48) mounted on the sidewall of the post in the inner chamber.

  • Patent number: 5762443
Abstract: A heavy duty shock absorber system for resisting large forces as may be encountered, for example, in a restraining barrier for a railroad crossing. A concrete bunker with an upstanding concrete-filled steel pipe has a hydraulic, compressive shock absorber mounted on the steel pipe for rotational, axial, and orthogonal movement. Forces applied to the shock absorber always pass through the axis of the steel pipe, thereby maximizing the resistance to the force while minimizing the necessary size of the system. A net is stored in a pit transverse the roadway parallel to the railroad tracks and is raised and lowered as appropriate. Each end of the net is attached to shock absorbing systems of the type described above.

  • Patent number: 5733063
Abstract: A vehicular traffic controller is disclosed wherein the control mechanism is positioned beneath the road surface. A plurality of transversely spaced levers extend upwardly from the surface. The levers are coupled to a shaft journaled for rotation below the road surface. Shaft rotation and lever retraction is effected by an operator to withdraw the levers to a position beneath the surface. Each lever is provided with a tire disabling member. A vehicle traversing the control point with the levers extended imparts rotation to the levers and causes the disabling members to damage the vehicle tires.

  • Patent number: 5711110
Abstract: A parking barrier permanently installed in vehicle parking surface, which has a base (20), with legs (22) embedded within the surface. A hinge plate (28) is attached to the base and allows the barrier to be rotated to a horizontal position permitting a vehicle to safely pass over the collapsed barrier. A channel shaped post (34) is pivotally attached to the hinge plate and a rigid strut (40) is retained on one end within the post and, on the other, to the hinge plate. The strut forms a right angle triangle with the post. A pull pin (46) holds the upper end of the strut in place and when removed, permits the barrier to be rotated horizontally removing the obstruction. A second, or electromechanical, embodiment utilizes a linear actuator (84) for the strut. An electronic controller (100) receives a signal through a coded radio frequency transmitter (102) and receiver (104) and, in turn, energizes the actuator to rotate the barrier into a horizontal position.

  • Patent number: 5704730
Abstract: When a post 10 is hit by a car in the direction indicated by arrow 42 the post moves a restricted amount in the direction of that arrow and that movement causes a support member 34 to be lifted up to raise the front wheels of the car off the ground. A plate 58 is secured to the underside of the support member 34 and, during raising of the support member 34, the plate passes over a series of notches 56. However, the plate 58 abuts those notches 56 to prevent the support member 34 moving downwardly again.

  • Patent number: 5520479
Abstract: A removable post assembly for securing an area including basically four parts: an underground base member, a removable post member, a hinge assembly and a locking mechanism. The underground base member includes a housing that partially receives the post member and an anchorage assembly mounted to the housing assembly. The hinge assembly includes two leaves and one of them is pivotally mounted to the housing at a position substantially adjacent to the ground level. The locking mechanism locks the other hinge leaf to the removable post member. A cover is rigidly mounted to the post member so that it houses the locking mechanism thereby protecting it from tampering. The cover includes a bottom opening that permits a user to insert a key or otherwise release the locking mechanism. The bottom opening is sufficiently close to the ground level to prevent the introduction of any tampering tools.
