  • Patent number: 4860493
Abstract: A shaft of a window actuator is operable to open and close a casement window sash when the shaft is rotated either by a hand crank or by a motor from inside of the premises. The shaft is automatically locked against rotation if a backdriving force is applied to the actuator from outside the premises. This prevents an open sash from being buffeted by wind and from being pulled open further by a potential intruder.

  • Patent number: 4803808
Abstract: A swivel fitting for an outwardly opening window, with a device for moving the casement frame between the closed position and the open position, for example in the form of a hand crank, with position-fixing arm driven by the crank and with an operating handle on one frame member of the stationary frame, in order to fix the casement frame in the closed position. At least one locking plate is included on the casement frame which co-operates with a locking element on a drive rod operable by the handle. When the window is in the closed position, a locking projection of the locking plate protrudes into a groove in the stationary frame so that the closing movement of the window may be supported relatively early by actuation of the handle and to ensure high security against break-in.

  • Patent number: 4796538
Abstract: A hold down bar for securing adjacent hatch covers of a hopper car and for further sealing the gap that exists between those covers includes a latch arm formed from spring steel in the configuration of an inverted U so as to have a generally straight midportion and legs which are directed downwardly and outwardly from the midportion. In addition, the bar has a resilient shoe which fits against and is attached to the midportion of the latch arm, but is shorter than the space between the two legs so that it can be adjusted back and forth in that space and thus positioned with considerable precision with regard to underlying hatch covers. The shoe in turn carries a gasket that seats against the adjacent hatch covers along a gap between them to effect a water tight seal with those latch covers. Being formed from spring steel, the latch arm will deflect in the presence of heavy impacts, such as derived from the latch covers being dropped on them, but will not take on a permanent deformation.

  • Patent number: 4793100
Abstract: A slide latch for latching the leading edge of a door, formed of a plastic panel, to an adjacent jamb-like member, is formed of a narrow, thin, horizontally elongated, flat plate positioned upon the door surface for sliding movement towards and away from the jamb-like member. Integral, narrow, rigid flanges, forming sled-like runners, are formed along the horizontally elongated side edges of the slider for slidable engagement with the panel surface. The slider is held within an open-ended, horizontally elongated, flattened loop that is struck-out of the panel. Stops are formed near the opposite ends of the slider for engaging the ends of the loops and thereby limiting the sliding movement of the slider. One of the stops may be enlarged to form a manual grip for moving the slider.

  • Patent number: 4790578
Abstract: An improved drop rod latch for use with double-hung gates used with fences of woven wire fabric. Typically one of such gates is secured in position by a vertically reciprocating latch rod carried in tubular guides attached to the inside or central stile of the gate frame and engaging at its lower end a hole or a socket member placed in the ground. The upper end of this latch rod has a short, right-angled extension which serves as a handle by which the latch may be grasped for manipulation. The central stile of the other gate frame carries a fork latch pivoted to extend between a horizontally projecting position in which it embraces the central stile of the gate to which the latch rod is attached and a vertically projecting position in which it does not engage said gate. Thus, when the latch rod is in engagement with the ground socket and the fork latch is embracing the latch rod-carrying stile, the gates cannot be swung to open position.

Abstract: A cantilevered sliding gate made up of a number of panels is disclosed. The panels are joined by post-tensioning rods, carried within horizontal members of the gate and extending substantially the length of horizontal members of the gate. During gate assembly, a tensile stress is induced in the post-tensioning means, which stress is transmitted to the horizontal member as a compressive stress. The resulting stress pattern results in a stiffening effect on the gate assembly, permitting lighter-weight construction than previously possible. The gate is mounted on vertical supports for movement in a plane defined by the supports.

  • Patent number: 4702037
Abstract: The service window is constructed from a universal extruded framing member which can be cut to any desired window dimensions. A bell crank linkage with hip actuator or either of the pair of handles can be used to swing both doors open simultaneously about their respective vertical hinges. The bell crank linkage is mechanically efficient and space saving, and includes an automatic spring return mechanism. The handles are located over center with respect to the hinges. A U-shaped channel-formed member with wedge-shaped insert slips over the handles to prevent the window from being opened. The innermost edges of the handles confront the wedge insert to prevent the handles from following the arc trajectories followed during opening. These trajectories pass closest as they cross the plane between vertical hinges, thus, the wedge insert provides a solid, stable locking condition which is not readily jarred loose by vibration or prying.

The axis of rotation of the support is positioned on the frame section and lies in a plane that is perpendicular to the direction in which the rotating post is raised and lowered. The bottom of the second lever arm of the support rests on and is forced by a compression spring against a stop on the frame section and the bottom of the first arm of the support has a recess. A rotating locking element, which is also a double-armed lever with two support surfaces on one arm, engages the recess.

Abstract: Disclosed is a combined gate and lock assembly of tubular construction comprising two horizontal female members fixed to two vertical posts pivotally mounted with respect to support structure. In the closed position, the longitudinal axes of the female members are aligned and receive coaxially in recipro cable relationship therein a male member having an eye engaged by the shackle of a padlock. In the open position, the male member is appropriately disengaged from one of the female members which are disposed in their open position by appropriate rotation of their vertical posts.

  • Patent number: 4539775
Abstract: A locking mechanism for coach door leaves of the type which are rotated and then driven axially upward by a powered door operating mechanism. Male and female locking bodies at the top of the door leaf shaft move together and apart axially without being radially engaged as the door leaf moves in or out at final closed position. Any external outward pushing force on the door leaf radially engages the locking bodies to prevent door opening.

  • Patent number: 4534587
Abstract: An improved latch assembly is provided particularly for use in so-called sunroof windows or the like in an automotive vehicle to movably position a vent panel, such as a pane of glass, to selectively open and close a vent opening. The latch assembly comprises at least one pair of mechanical links pivoted to each other and respectively pivoted to the vent panel and a stationary main frame at one side of the vent opening. The links are designed for articulated movement generally over-center relative to each other between a first position holding a latch in locking engagement with a keeper on the main frame thereby locking the vent panel in a closed position and a second position supporting the vent panel in an open position relative to the vent opening.

  • Patent number: 4530185
Abstract: By providing two separate units for actively opening and closing a door of an automobile, safe and reliable door opening and closing operation may be achieved. The first unit is operated to open the door in a normal way and closes the door to its not fully latched state while the second unit completes the door closure operation by closing it to the fully latched state, thereby reducing the unfavorable influences arising from the impact which is otherwise unavoidable for complete closure of the door.

  • Patent number: 4454686
Abstract: A panel structure for mounting on any of various enclosures susceptible to explosions or excessive internal pressures, is formed as a self-contained unit mountable in sealing relation to a pressure-relief opening of the enclosure. Disclosed is a one-piece back plate with an integral mounting flange isolating all other frame components from the area in which a sealing function takes place. A peripheral seal on the closure panel exerts pressure against the back plate in a normal position of the closure panel, in a direction parallel to the lines along which internal pressure is exerted against the closure panel, thus providing an efficient seal about the entire periphery of the relief opening, without the necessity of precisely dimensioning the sealing gasket and frame components at the locations where they are interfaced for sealing engagement. The gasket includes side-by-side primary and secondary sealing beads, one of which projects forwardly a distance less than the other.
