  • Patent number: 4636185
Abstract: The invention features an apparatus for fabricating a box-like article or slipcase. The apparatus feeds a box blank from a hopper containing stacked blanks to a work station. The work station comprises a forming block about which the panels of the box blank are folded and bonded together, and clamping, folding and heating apparatus. The complete box is removed from the forming block and conveyed away which causes the fabricating cycle to process a new blank into a box-like article.

  • Patent number: 4582552
Abstract: An improved crash-lock carton forming apparatus having three carton forming stations (44, 60 and 80). The first station (44) has engagement means comprising a pair of transversely spaced lifting arms (45, 45a) for lifting two flaps (20, 21) of the carton (12) and folding the flaps against side panels (14, 15) of the carton (12) and ploughs (49, 49a) for folding connector tabs (24, 25) in the reverse direction to that of the panels (14, 15). Second station (60) downstream of the first includes engagement means comprising lifting arms (61, 61a) for lifting and folding flaps (19, 22) in the same direction as the first two flaps (20, 21). A bonding station is adjacent the second station (60) for applying bonding agent to the tabs (24, 25). The third station (80) lifts and folds the remaining two flaps (19, 22) against associated ones of the side panels (13, 16). First and second holding and conveying means (51, 52 and 70, 71) for conveying the blank (12) through the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4563169
Abstract: A method and apparatus for folding a flat container blank about parallel score lines to bring a glue flap on the blank into juxtaposed relationship with respect to a side panel of the blank. Gripping mechanisms are associated with an intermittently operated conveyor means for pulling a blank past a glue applying station, into the folding station, and into a compressing station where the manufacturers' joint is set. Release means is provided for opening the gripping mechanisms downstream of the compressing station, and a following set of gripper mechanisms push the freed blank from the machine. Further conveyor means may be associated with the apparatus for feeding a liner to the blank to produce a laminated folded and glued blank.

  • Patent number: 4530685
Abstract: A box assembly comprising a series of three corner connected boxes is formed from a unitary blank of sheet material. The unitary blank is suitably cut and scored to include along the length thereof twelve body panels, two pairs of tabs, each pair spaced apart by an even number of body panels, and a flap on the end of the blank. In addition, closing flaps are suitably cut and scored on the tops and bottoms of selected ones of the body panels for use in closing off the openings on the tops and bottoms of the individual boxes of the assembly. To fabricate the box assembly from the blank, the tabs of each pair of tabs are folded and glued back on themselves to form a joining flap. An adhesive is then placed on the surfaces of each of the joining flaps and the end flap. The blank is then folded over on itself such that six of the body panels on the blank are superimposed over the remaining six.

  • Patent number: 4526563
Abstract: A carton or package for packaging semi-fluid material which can be hardened by freezing, such as ice cream, sherbet, and the like, is formed from specially constructed integral carton blank and a special process for assembling the same. The carton blank has a front panel, a bottom panel, a rear panel, a cover panel, and a front cover sealing flap articulated one to the other in the order named, with end-forming flaps and glue-flap extensions extending laterally therefrom adapted to be glued together to form inner and outer walls and side-cover flaps. The bottom outer wall-forming flap is glued to the inner wall-forming flaps by glue strips along the side edges of the latter, where they are joined to the front and rear panels, and the side-cover flap has a tuck-in tab adapted to be tucked in under the bottom outer wall-forming flap between the glue strips.

  • Patent number: 4519181
Abstract: In a carton erecting, loading and sealing machine for packaging a plurality of articles in a sleeve type carton, the gluing and sealing station of the machine is provided with a pair of upper folding plates and a pair of lower folding plates on either side of the carton conveyor for folding the upper and lower end panels of the cartons against the dust flaps of the cartons after glue has been applied to seal the cartons. Each folding plate is mounted through rotatable mountings to a pair of cranks which move the folding plates downstream as the plates fold and seal the end panels to the dust flaps.

  • Patent number: 4505696
Abstract: A compliance carrier of the basket type having a row of cells on each side of the center handle panel. Each row's cell divider panel section and cell compliance panel section are positioned and structured within the carrier blank so that the cell divider panels and cell compliance panels are glued together along a fold line oriented in the cross machine direction relative to the machine direction travel of the blank through a carton gluing machine, that fold line being a leading edge on the panel section not folded. Further, each row's cell divider panel section and cell compliance panel section are oriented and structured so that no glue tabs or panels within either section needs to be folded prior to gluing of the cell divider panels and cell compliance panels one to the other.

  • Patent number: 4499704
Abstract: A corrugated box forming, loading and sealing machine, including a first or magazine and infeed section, a second or forming and loading section, and a third or closing and discharge section. In the first section there is stored and fed one-at-a-time flat corrugated blanks consisting of bottom, front, back and two top-half panels, all with extended edge panels, while glue is applied to the bottom, front and back edge panels. In the second section a product, such as cartons or plastic bottles, and two side panels, are loaded from opposite sides onto the bottom panel. When full, the loaded bottom panel is lowered through an opening whose four edge portions cause the front and back panels, and their respective edge panels to wrap around the product.

  • Patent number: 4490129
Abstract: In the forming of cartons, a water-based adhesive, e.g. an aqueous-dispersed polyvinylacetate, is applied as an atomized spray by guns to selected parts of a carton blank of uncoated board and partially dried by hot gas (air) jets, and the carton is erected by forcing the carton blank by a punch through a forming die so that the selected parts are pressed briefly against cooperating parts of the carton to secure them together, by means of projections on the punch and pressure members forming part of the die. The atomized spraying followed by hot air drying of the adhesive enables adhesion to be effected by very brief pressure, and the method can thus be used for high speed production of cartons of uncoated board.
