A loop at each corner of the towel enables a user to force the pocket inside-out, grab a handful of sand, and pull the sand into the pocket while returning the pocket to its normal configuration. The pocket is of greater horizontal extent than the pad, and the pad can be moved to different positions within the pocket to support different portions of the body of a person resting on the mattress. The pad can comprise either an air-filled cushion or a foam cushion, and the firmness or degree of support provided by the pad can be adjusted by adjusting the amount of air in an air-filled cushion or by changing the foam cushion.

A handle is also secured to the toweling so as to facilitate carrying of the beach bag particularly when it is full. The loops are fixed to the four corners of the sun bathing mat and the mating stakes are insertable into and through each one of the four loops and into a supporting surface to anchor each one of the four corners of the mat to the supporting surface. The mat may also be provided with a plurality of binding cords which enable the user to bind the mat in a small compass. The mat contains no pockets to trap sand or other foreign substances.

In preferred embodiments, the folds of material forming the pleat are seamed together only at the ends of the pleat so that the medial parts of the pleat can unfold during use. The seams will hold the pleat in place so that when the bed is unoccupied, the folds will lie flat, especially if pressed. The seams may be arranged to coincide with the upper edge of the mattress and, between the seams and the side edges of the mattress, fabric equivalent to two of the three layers of the pleat may be removed to give a flat valance portion.

When doll 11 is removed from pocket 13, elastic band 18 biases the open end of the pocket against pillow 15.
