Abstract: Polymers comprising reversible hydrophobic functionalities are disclosed. The preferred embodiment polymers comprise Lewis acid segments and Lewis base segments. The polymer segments are, by themselves, hydrophilic and will either swell or dissolve in water. When the segments are incorporated into a polymer according to the present invention, the segments form water-insoluble or hydrophobic complexes. Upon changes in pH, temperature or solvent type, these complexes may dissociate, giving large transitions in polymer viscosity, emulsification ability, mechanical strength or transport properties. These polymers are useful as reversible emulsifiers which form stable emulsions at acidic pH and unstable emulsions at basic pH, as water-borne thickeners having low viscosity at low pH and high viscosity at high pH, as superabsorbing resins, or as coatings for pharmaceutical or agricultural agents.

  • Patent number: 5589533
Abstract: A self-crosslinking composition contains: (a) an oil having an unsaturated fatty acid or an ester of an unsaturated fatty acid as one of its components, (b) a drier, and (c) a polymer or an elastomer that is capable of crosslinking in the absence of a peroxide. A forming (such as a floor tile, a linoleum long floor material, a wall material and a water-proof sheet) may be manufactured by forming and curing the self crosslinking composition and then adding a filler. Since the self-crosslinking composition is capable of crosslinking without using peroxide, the crosslinking reaction is easily conducted without using special equipment to reject air. The composition has a number of advantages over crosslinking methods that use peroxide, including decreased scorch generation, decreased permanent compressive strain, and superior heat resistance and anti-aging resistance. The composition is free from pollution of sulfur and metal and generates no harmful gas during waste incineration.

  • Patent number: 5552472
Abstract: A solution for forming a graft substrate containing a graft initiator, a catalyst for activating the graft initiator, a first component of water dispersable polymer and a second component of a monomer, each of which includes a functional group for reaction with an activated site on the substrate for grafting thereto and water. A method for grafting at least one of the components to a fiber, yarn or fabric substrate is also disclosed wherein increased flame retarding and yarn integrity is achieved while simultaneously allowing control of fabric porosity. This method does not significantly reduce fabric pliability as compared to uncoated fabric. Furthermore, the graft component may be selectively applied polymer to produce a preferred porosity range or a cutting pattern for the fabric substrate. A fabric, a portion of which includes a graft component or components thereon, forms another embodiment of the invention.

  • Patent number: 5548018
Abstract: An aqueous primer composition comprising a copolymer wherein a cationic monomer, a specific alkoxysilane monomer, a silane macromonomer and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer are contained in aqueous medium. For this reason, regardless of the alkalinity of the substrate, the aqueous primer composition can form a highly water-resistant, alkali-resistant, tough film. Furthermore, compared with the prior art, a higher concentration and a lower viscosity, so that the resulting primer composition shows excellent penetration into the substrate at high concentration and provides for sufficient substrate-reinforcing and water-proofing effects. Moreover, when forming a film thereby and forming a finish layer thereon, this composition shows a high affinity for the top coating or adhesive to insure a firm integration of the finish layer with the substrate surface.

Abstract: This invention provides polymers useful in coating compositions. The polymers are prepared via a free radical polymerization using ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The polymers of this invention possess pendant allylic groups which are capable of effecting free-radical flux when the compositions are applied to a substrate and exposed to oxygen. Coatings formed from preferred compositions possess superior solvent, print, and block resistance.

  • Patent number: 5530041
Abstract: A monomer-rich acrylic syrup is cast including about 10% to about 20% ground acrylic particles. During curing, the particles absorb over half their weight in monomer, and a cured sheet is formed in which the matrix monomer and uncrosslinked polymer form a phase which extends through the particles, while the particles appear to be fused together. Including a crosslinker in the syrup further insures the interpenetration of the matrix phase into the swollen particles. A textured surface is formed, which is useful as an anti-slip surface in bathtubs and shower stalls, after thermoforming.
