  • Patent number: 5405917
Abstract: The molecular weight of solid polymers, particularly polyolefins, is modified by addition of organic peroxides (or other free radical generators), which is admixed in a first reaction zone. The polymer is then melted followed by addition of additives such as antioxidants and light stabilizers, which are admixed in a second reaction zone where intense and rapid mixing occurs, such as within the barrel of an extruder. The separate admixture of primary and secondary additives provides improved color and odor characteristics for the polymer compared to concurrent admixture of all the additives.

Abstract: A two step method of preparing fire retardant thermoplastic polymer granules from fire retarding agents and thermoplastic polymers in a stationary granulating cylinder containing mixing elements mounted to a central rotating shaft which fluidizes and throws contained materials toward the center of the cylinder, forcing axial and radial flows simultaneously on the materials thereby forming granules. In the first step, a fire retarding agent is mixed with a fluid thermoplastic polymer at a temperature exceeding the solidification point of the polymer until a homogeneous mixture is formed. In the second stage, the mixture is solidified by cooling while the granulating cylinder continues to operate until the fire retardant agent is bound together in homogeneous granular form by a matrix of solid thermoplastic polymer. Suitable fire retarding agents include alumina, phosphates, borates, melamine, melamine cyanurate, metal cyanurates, and halogenated phenols.

  • Patent number: 5135974
Abstract: A method of preparing fire retardant concentrates wherein a base soluble cyanurate is dissolved in base and mixed with a fluid thermoplastic polymer. An amino-s-triazine is then reacted in-situ with the solubulized cyanurate to precipitate very fine insoluble cyanurate-amino-s-triazine adduct evenly distributed in the polymer. The mixture is cooled below its solidification point, binding the film particles of the insoluble adduct together by a matrix of solid thermoplastic polymer. The solidified matrix bound adduct is comminuted to form particulate thermoplastic fire retardant concentrate. The fluid thermplastic polymer may be a melt or an aqueous dispersion of a stable polymer such as nylon, polyolefin, polycarbonate, polyester, polystyrene, and polybutadiene. The particulate granules may contain concentrations as high as 65 to 95 percent of the adducts produced from soluble cyanurates such as sodium isocyanurate, and base solubulized isocyanuric acid and chlorocyanuric acid.

  • Patent number: 4785033
Abstract: Good adhesion of rubber to metal is very important in rubber articles containing metal reinforcement. For example, in a steel belted tire good adhesion between the tire rubber and the metal tire cord is of utmost importance. Good metal to rubber adhesion is also of great importance in a variety of other rubber products, including power transmission belts, conveyor belts, and rubber hoses containing metal reinforcements. This invention reveals the use of certain adhesion promoters that are useful in rubber products containing metal reinforcements. More specifically, this invention discloses the use of allyl phosphite esters, allyl phosphate esters, 5-nitro isatoic anhydride, iminodiacetic acids, N-substituted iminodiacetic acids, salts of N-substituted iminodiacetic acids, and salts of iminodiacetic acids as adhesion promoters in composites containing rubber and metal.

  • Patent number: 4690953
Abstract: A method of mechanically frothing and casting an aqueous ionic polyurethane dispersion to yield a mechanically frothed polyurethane foam. The method comprises admixing an aqueous ionic polyurethane dispersion with a stearate stabilizer and an optional aziridine crosslinking agent, and frothing the low viscosity admixture. The polyurethane dispersion contains particles having an average size of less than one micron, and contains between 35 and 70 percent by weight dispersed polyurethane solids. Preferably, each polyurethane particle in the aqueous dispersion is crosslinked. Before frothing, the low viscosity admixture contains between 33 and 87 percent by weight of the polyurethane dispersion, up to 33 percent by weight of an azirdine composition and between 13 and 50 percent by weight of a 33 percent aqueous dispersion of a stearate salt and has, as a result, a viscosity in the range of 100 to 200 centipoise. After frothing, the frothed admixture is knife-coated and cured into a flexible foam sheet.

Abstract: The formaldehyde emission in the thermoplastic processing of antioxidant containing oxymethylene copolymer molding compositions is reduced considerably if these molding compositions additionally contain on the surface or homogeneously mixed in a specifically defined formaldehyde binding material which contains in the molecule at least two 4,6-diamino-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl groups. In this way there are avoided deposits on the die and odor annoyance.

  • Patent number: 4607071
Abstract: Improvement of a process for spin-dyeing acid-modified polymers or copolymers of acrylonitrile in which cationic quaternary dyestuffs are added to the spinning mass and spun according to the wet-spinning procedure. The improvement is characterized by using dyestuffs characterized by a migration factor M of 20 or less than 20, by a combination index K of less than 2.5 and a cation weight of more than 310. Migration factor M and combination index K are known values in the dyestuff field or can be determined. The dyestuff to be used according to the invention can belong to the most different classes of dyestuffs; they fix rapidly on the polymer, and thus they do not color, or color only to a minor extent, the coagulation, stretching and washing baths although they are soluble in water and aqueous solutions of these baths.

Abstract: Novel .alpha.-aminoacetamides are powerful stabilizers for organic materials subject to oxygen and heat degradation, and particularly for synthetic natural rubber, synthetic ester lubricants and synthetic resinous materials. A wide range of substituents on the amine and amide N atoms, at least one of which substituents is an alkylene imine (cyclic), and an even wider range of substituents on the saturated carbon atom, yields an array of stabilizers having a wide range of compatibility in compositions comprising various synthetic resinous compounds to be stabilized.Novel syntheses are provided utilizing at least one amine nucleophilic agent, a trichloromethide ion generating agent, and an alkoxide ion generating agent, which together in the presence of aqueous alkali and an onium salt, yield novel .alpha.-aminoacetamides in which a wide choice of substituents may be introduced. The nucleophilic agent may be a primary or secondary amine, or one of each. The trichloromethide ion generating agent is a haloform.
