  • Patent number: 5412027
Abstract: Homogeneous polymer blends are prepared from otherwise thermodynamically immiscible polymers, especially including block copolymers. Thus, polymers such as polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) block copolymer or polystyrene/poly(1,2-butadiene) block copolymer are dissolved under pressure in supercritical fluid solvents such as chlorodifluoromethane and n-butane, respectively, and expanded through a fine nozzle. As the SCF solvent evaporates, the polymer deposits as a substantially homogeneous material.

Abstract: The invention relates to lactam mixtures which give lactam melts having increased viscosity, to their production and to their use, preferably in the activated anionic polymerization of lactams (to cast polyamides). According to the invention, certain unsaturated aromatic vinyl compound/diene block copolymers (B) which dissolve in the lactam melt are added to the lactam (melt)s (A) in quantities of 1 to 15% by weight, a component (C) which is compatible with the diene block copolymers (B) and which dissolves completely or partly in the lactam melt optionally being added as an additional component. The block copolymers (B) used contain 10 to 85% by weight aromatic vinyl units and 15 to 90% by weight diene units. The block copolymers (B) may even be partly hydrogenated, epoxidized or grafted. The preferred lactam is .epsilon.-caprolactam.Lactam melts of increased viscosity are particularly suitable for taking up reinforcing materials and fillers (D) and for the production of filled cast polyamides.

Abstract: Diene polymers or copolymers having improved raw polymer viscosity and reduced hysteresis in the cured and carbon black reinforced state are provided. These diene polymers or copolymers comprise a mixture of diene polymer or copolymer chains containing carbon-tin bonds in the main polymer or copolymer chains and diene polymer or copolymer chains containing terminals derived from aromatic nitrile coumpounds. The diene polymer or copolymers are prepared by first coupling a portion of the living diene polymer or copolymer chains obtained by anionic polymerization using a tin polyhalide coupling agent and then terminating the remaining living diene polymer or copolymer chains using aromatic nitrile compounds. The resultant diene polymers or copolymers have improved raw polymer viscosity and when compounded with carbon black and cured have reduced hysteresis properties. The polymers can be utilized to form elastomer compositions for tire treads having reduced rolling resistance.
