Abstract: An ophthalmic device is disclosed that is a polymerization product of a monomeric mixture comprising (a) a major amount of a non-silicone-containing hydrophilic monomer; (b) a hydrophobic monomer; and (c) a crosslinking agent, wherein the ophthalmic device has an equilibrium water content of at least about 70 weight percent and further wherein the ophthalmic device has an evaporative dehydration barrier layer on the surface thereof. A method for the mitigation of evaporative corneal dehydration employing the high water content ophthalmic device is also disclosed.

Abstract: A solution with a salt-sensitive polymer binder for use in fibrous webs, where the binder contains a copolymer comprising repeat units derived from butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and amino functionalized alkyl acrylate or methacrylate or amino functionalized alkyl acrylamide or methacrylamide optionally including monomers such as vinyl acetate and/or vinyl acetate/ethylene. Abstract: Disclosed are multi-purpose polymers that are the polymerization product of a monomer mixture comprising at least one amino-substituted vinyl monomer; at least one nonionic vinyl monomer; at least one associative vinyl monomer; at least one semihydrophobic vinyl surfactant monomer; and, optionally, comprising one or more hydroxy-substituted nonionic vinyl monomer, crosslinking monomer, chain transfer agent or polymeric stabilizer. The problem for the present invention is providing a method capable of producing a polymer or block copolymer having a chemically convertible functional group at the end from a radical polymerizable monomer and providing a method for recovering the iron complex in a solvent with a high recovery rate after the polymerization reaction. This problem is solved by providing a novel iron complex, a method for producing a polymer in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator that uses the iron complex as a polymerization catalyst and a method for simply and easily recovering the iron complex.

Abstract: The present invention relates to polymeric compositions useful in the manufacture of biocompatible medical devices. More particularly, the present invention relates to certain monoethylenically unsaturated polycarbosiloxane monomers capable of polymerization to form polymeric compositions having desirable physical characteristics useful in the manufacture of ophthalmic devices.

Abstract: It is intended to provide a method for easily detecting a phosphorylated peptide (protein) in a test sample by using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) which has been conventionally employed in analyzing a protein; a polyacrylamide gel for electrophoresis to be used in the method; a method of producing the gel; and a synthesizing intermediate in producing the gel. The polyacrylamide gel for electrophoresis to be used in the method of the invention is characterized in that at least a part of the structure thereof has a structure represented by the following formula (I); wherein M2+represents a transition metal ion; and X represents a linker group.
Abstract: Azidoaryl-substituted cyclooctene monomers and synthesized and used in the preparation of various copolymers. Among these copolymers are those prepared from ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclooctene, polyethylene glycol-substituted cyclooctene, and azidoaryl-substituted cyclooctene. These copolymers are useful in the formation of crosslinked films that reduce fouling of water purification membranes.

Abstract: The invention concerns the polymers obtained by the use of sulphur compounds in a process for controlled radical polymerization in water of acrylic acid and/or acrylic acid with hydrosoluble monomers.
