Abstract: A blood pressure measurement device includes a sensor that detects a change of an internal pressure of an air bladder during the inflation and/or deflation of the air bladder. The sensor further includes a first sensor and a second sensor, which each have a diaphragm connected to the air bladder. A face of each of the diaphragms of the first sensor and the second sensor is flexibly displaced in accordance with the change of the internal pressure of the air bladder. The face of the diaphragm of the second sensor is arranged in a different position and/or direction from the face of the diaphragm of the first sensor. A central processing unit of the device includes a failure judgment unit that determines whether there was any failure with the sensor based on difference between the internal pressures detected by the first sensor and the second sensor.

Abstract: In a sphygmomanometer, an elbow detection mechanism that detects the placement of a measurement subject's elbow is provided in a portion of a cuff unit above a rotation axis. Because the elbow detection mechanism is provided in the portion of the cuff unit above the rotation axis on the biological member (upper arm) exit side, the distance L between the elbow detection mechanism and the biological member (upper arm) exit of the cuff unit can be kept constant even when the cuff unit rotates. This enables providing a sphygmomanometer that has a mechanism for changing the inclination angle of the cuff unit relative to a base and includes a mechanism for achieving a constant distance between the elbow detection mechanism and the entrance of the cuff unit regardless of the inclination angle of the cuff unit.

Abstract: A blood pressure information measurement device includes light emitting elements and light receiving elements as a plurality of pairs of first and second sensors in a cuff. While the cuff pressure is increased, combinations of the plurality of pairs of the light emitting elements and the light receiving elements are switched, and volume pulse waves are obtained from each of the combinations. After increasing the cuff pressure, for each of the volume pulse waves corresponding to the combinations, a specific volume value at a point where the amount of volume change becomes maximal is extracted. Thereafter, based on values corresponding to the maximum and minimum blood pressure and the specific volume value, the sensors for measurement are determined.

Abstract: A blood pressure measurement system that non-invasively determines an individual's blood pressure can include a noninvasive blood pressure sensor having an optical sensor and a motion sensor. The optical sensor can provide a photoplethysmograph signal obtained from a patient to a processor. The motion sensor can provide a motion signal to the processor responsive to motion of the patient. In one embodiment, the processor calculates or estimates the blood pressure of the patient based on the photoplethysmograph signal and the motion signal. Advantageously, the system can obtain this blood pressure measurement without an occlusive cuff, thereby reducing patient discomfort. In other implementations, the processor calculates a blood pressure-related parameter from the photoplethysmograph and motion signal. The processor can occasionally trigger an occlusive cuff measurement as this parameter changes, thereby reducing the frequency of occlusive cuff measurements.

Abstract: A system and method for monitoring blood pressure of a wearer has an inflatable arm cuff that is selectably inflatable to differing air pressures that incorporates a fabric having both a light transmission property and a light reflection property when the fabric is illuminated with light having wavelength(s) in the range from about 400 to about 2200 nanometers. A radiation source and a detector are attached to the fabric in relative positions such that the reception of incident radiation by the detector is directly affected by a change in the amount of light transmitted through the fabric relative to the amount of light reflected by the fabric as the fabric stretches in response to motion in the body of a wearer due to changes in the flow of blood through an artery disposed beneath the fabric occurring in consonance with variations in the air pressure within the inflatable cuff.

If the first shape memory alloy changes to the first shape, pressure applied to the body part surrounded by the strap is increased. Even when the first shape memory alloy changes to the first shape, if the second shape memory alloy changes to the second shape, the pressure applied to the body part surrounded by the strap is reduced.

Abstract: Single- or dual-bladder devices for remote ischemic preconditioning and blood pressure monitoring are disclosed along with various oscillometry-based and other methods for detecting systolic and diastolic blood pressure while the ischemic preconditioning treatment is in progress. The devices and methods of the invention provide for delivery of ischemic preconditioning at the lowest effective cuff pressure while closely monitoring patient's hemodynamics. Advantageously, the device of the invention allows both ischemic preconditioning and blood pressure monitoring to be done on the same limb. Disposable battery-powered version of the device of the present invention is especially useful for emergency use with patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction, acute stroke, or acute trauma. Additional device configurations are described for use in a percutaneous intervention and vascular sealing settings.
