The measuring device (1) is flexible to a degree that it is flattened by a closing eye lid and the protrusion creates an indentation of the cornea. The occurring force on the protrusion is measured by the sensor. Applying a constant lid acceleration/deceleration model to the movement of the lid and a mechanical model to the cornea, the tension of the cornea is determined and deduced from the force measured with the lid closed, yielding the true intraocular pressure. In an alternative, the protrusion is characterized by a discontinuity in its shape, or the sensor is subdivided, each subsensor being characterized by a protrusion of different shape. With the values obtained as extrema and at the discontinuity or with different protrusions, the cornea tension can be obtained by a (linear) extrapolation.

  • Patent number: 8419661
Abstract: A method for measuring an upper limb reaching capability of a user with an impaired limb is provided. Each upper limb is placed at a default position on a horizontal surface. A target is displayed from among a plurality of targets on the horizontal surface. One of the limbs reaches for the target. Limb choice, position information and elapsed time are sensed and recorded. The reaching limb is retracted to the default position. The displaying step through the retracting step are repeated for each of the plurality of targets, wherein each of the plurality of targets is spaced apart.

  • Publication number: 20130085370
Abstract: In systems and methods for generating cross-linking activity in an eye, a feedback system monitors a biomechanical strength of the eye in response to the photoactivation of a cross-linking agent applied to an eye. The feedback system includes a perturbation system that applies a force to the eye and a characterization system that determines an effect of the force on the eye. The effect of the force provides an indicator of the biomechanical strength of the eye. The characterization system determines the effect of the force on the eye by measuring an amount of deformation caused by the force or a rate of recovery from the deformation.

  • Patent number: 8403862
Abstract: A method includes directing toward a portion of a subject's body a first pulse of electromagnetic energy. While the portion is in a functional state due to the first pulse, a second pulse is directed toward the portion. At a second-pulse time, reflected energy due to the second pulse is detected. While the portion is in a functional state due to the first and second pulses, a third pulse is directed toward the portion. At a third-pulse time, energy of the third pulse, reflected from the portion, is detected. In response to detecting the pulses at the second-pulse time and the third-pulse time, a characteristic of the portion is quantified resulting from (a) the functional state due to the first pulse and (b) the functional state due to the first and second pulses. A clinical state of the subject is identified. Other embodiments are described.

Abstract: Various embodiments of a device for performing a gaze field sobriety test are disclosed. The device includes a housing. A light source is affixed in or on the housing. The light source generates light during at least a portion of the gaze field sobriety test. A speaker positioned in or on the housing generates sounds during at least a portion of the gaze field sobriety test. A power source is coupled to the speaker and the light source. An input is positioned on the housing. The input is selectable by a test administrator to initiate an audible sound through the speaker at a predetermined time interval during at least a portion of the gaze field sobriety test. The audible sound provides an indication to the test administrator during the gaze field sobriety test to assist in proper performance of the gaze field sobriety test.

  • Patent number: 8379871
Abstract: A personalized hearing profile is generated for an ear-level device comprising a memory, microphone, speaker and processor. Communication is established between the ear-level device and a companion device, having a user interface. A frame of reference in the user interface is provided, where positions in the frame of reference are associated with sound profile data. A position on the frame of reference is determined in response to user interaction with the user interface, and certain sound profile data associated with the position. Certain data is transmitted to the ear level device. Sound can be generated through the speaker based upon the audio stream data to provide real-time feedback to the user. The determining and transmitting steps are repeated until detection of an end event.
